Vinicio Meza
Biographical note
Vinicio Meza is a composer, clarinetist and saxophonist from Costa
Rica.
He began his Music studies with his father, then he went to the
Municipal School of Music in his hometown Paraíso, Cartago, where
he began his clarinet studies. Thereafter he continued his Music
studies at Conservatorio de Castella and after graduation, he studied
for two years at Interlochen Arts Academy, in Michigan, USA.
He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance
from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, USA, and his
Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from Florida State
University in Tallahassee, USA.

Vinicio Meza es un compositor, clarinetista y saxofonista de Costa Rica.
Inició sus estudios musicales con su padre, luego ingresó a la Escuela
Municipal de Música de Paraíso, Cartago, donde comienza sus estudios
de clarinete. Posteriormente continúa sus estudios musicales en el
Conservatorio de Castella y al graduarse recibe una beca de la Academia
de Arte de Interlochen, en Michigan, Estados Unidos, donde estudia
durante dos años.

Filadelfia, Estados Unidos y la Maestría en Música de la Universidad

In Costa Rica, he has been awarded the National Prize in Music
Performance, the National Prize in Music Composition; the Prize for
Arranger of the Year, the Prize for Composer of the Year in formal
music and the Prize for Composer of the Year in jazz from ACAM
(Composers and Authors Association of Costa Rica); and the Áncora
Prize in Music.
He is a composer and arranger of symphonic music, chamber music,
jazz and salsa music. Several works have been recorded or
commissioned in Costa Rica and abroad.
As a clarinetist, he has participated in several music festivals such as
Pacific Music Festival in Japan, Evian Music Festival in France, Graz
Music Festival in Austria, Mozart International Festival in Reunion
Island and National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado, USA. He has
been soloist with the Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, the InterAmerican Youth Orchestra in Puerto Rico and the Interlochen Arts
Academy Symphony Orchestra in Michigan, USA.
He has been Clarinet Professor at University of Costa Rica and
National University of Costa Rica. He is a member of the Symphony
Orchestra of Costa Rica and teaches Music Appreciation at the
Technological Institute of Costa Rica.
He was the music director, composer and arranger of Soncaribe
Salsa Orchestra. He is clarinetist, saxophonist and composer of
Swing en 4 jazz quartet. With this group he has four recordings and
has played in Costa Rica, Cuba, Argentina, Canada, Sweden and
Germany. With Soncaribe and Swing en 4 he recorded the music that
he composed for the Costa Rican film “Murder at the Meneo”.
En Costa Rica ha recibido el Premio Nacional de Música en Ejecución
Musical y el Premio Nacional Aquileo J. Echeverría en Composición
Musical; el Premio al Arreglista del Año, el Premio al Compositor del
Año en la categoría de música formal y el Premio al Compositor del Año
en la categoría de jazz otorgados por la Asociación de Compositores y
Autores Musicales de Costa Rica; y el Premio Áncora en Música.
Es compositor y arreglista de música sinfónica, música de cámara, jazz y
salsa. Varias obras han sido grabadas o comisionadas en Costa Rica y en
el extranjero.
Como clarinetista ha participado en varios festivales musicales como el
Festival Musical del Pacífico en Japón, Festival Musical de Evian en
Francia, Festival Musical de Graz en Austria y Festival Internacional de
Mozart en Isla de Reunion. Ha sido solista con la Orquesta Sinfónica
Nacional de Costa Rica, la Orquesta Juvenil Interamericana en Puerto
Rico y la Orquesta de la Academia de Arte de Interlochen en Michigan,
Estados Unidos.
Ha sido profesor de clarinete en la Universidad de Costa Rica y en la
Universidad Nacional. Actualmente es clarinetista en la Orquesta
Sinfónica Nacional de Costa Rica y profesor de apreciación musical en el
Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica.
Fue el compositor, arreglista y director de la orquesta de salsa Soncaribe
y es clarinetista, saxofonista y compositor del cuarteto de jazz Swing en
4, grupo con el cual ha grabado cuatro discos y se ha presentado en
diversos escenarios nacionales e internacionales en Alemania, Suecia,
Argentina, Cuba y Canadá. Con Soncaribe y Swing en 4 grabó la música
compuesta por él mismo para la película costarricense “Asesinato en el
Meneo”.
"Latin American Suite" was written in 2001 in its version for string trio
(violin, viola and cello). Subsequently, the author made a version for
string orchestra in 2004. The work was created in the spirit of four
Latin American musical genres that exemplify the music diversity of
this continent. We will listen to the passionate tango from Argentina,
the elegant vals from Venezuela, the melancholic Brazilian melody
and the rhythmic energy from Cuba. The emotion and unpredictability
of the tango is shown by sudden changes of tempo and character in
the first movement. The second movement has two contrasting
sections, one of irregular melodic lines that give a more modern
sound and the other a simple but elegant character reminiscing of old
times. Through a loving melody the third movement recalls the
tradition of serenading, and the fourth movement invites you to enjoy
the rhythmic cadence of Cuban son.
“Suite latinoamericana” fue escrita en el año 2001 en su versión para trío
de cuerdas (violín, viola y violonchelo). Posteriormente el autor realizó la
versión para orquesta de cuerdas en el año 2004. La obra fue creada en
el espíritu de cuatro géneros musicales de Latinoamérica que son
ejemplo de la gran variedad de música de este continente. Así
escucharemos el tango apasionado de Argentina, el vals elegante de
Venezuela, la melodía melancólica de Brasil y la energía rítmica de Cuba.
Lo emocional e impredecible del tango se muestra por súbitos cambios
de tempo y carácter en el primer movimiento. El segundo movimiento
tiene dos partes contrastantes, una de irregulares líneas melódicas que
dan un sonido más moderno y la otra de un sencillo pero elegante
carácter rememorativo de antaño. Mediante una amorosa melodía el
tercer movimiento rememora la tradición de interpretar serenatas y el
cuarto movimiento invita a disfrutar la cadencia del son cubano. Matching parts available from the publisher at:
