The Hispanic/Latino family (apuntes)
 In Hispanic culture, the extended family is very important
 Grandparents often live in the same house as parents and children, or
very close by
 Families often place the needs of the family over individual concerns
 Generally, Hispanic children learn to show great respect for authority,
the patriarchal family structure, and extended family members
 Families are characterized by a deep sense of responsibility, rigid
gender roles, and great respect for the elderly
 Families prioritize marriage, and children having married parents
Semejanzas y diferencias
 What are some similarities and
differences between general Hispanic
families and general American families?
 In your notes, make a venn diagram (in
English) with at least five
similiarities/differences
Repaso  Noun/Adjective Agreement
 Before we talk about descriptions, remember that
nouns and adjectives have to AGREE in Spanish :
 El hombre alto
 La mujer alta
 El chico joven
 La chica joven
Es  Is
 Describing a person or thing in Spanish is very similar to describing
a person or thing in English
 Elena is tall  Elena es alta (remember noun/adjective agreement!)
 Victor is lazy  Victor es perezoso
 Roberto is smart  Roberto es inteligente
** This rule only applies to one person (él, ella, usted) or one thing!
We will learn how to talk about different subject pronouns next class
¡Cuidado!
 To say “my”, use “mi” for one person, “mis” for
two… we will talk about this more later!
 Which is correct? ¿Por qué?
 Mi madre es alta.
 Mi la madre es alta.
 Which is correct? ¿Por qué?

 When you are finished, read your sentences to the
person sitting next to you.
 If you have extra time, repeat for a celebrity.
