Let´s start!
Welcome to the eighth week! Esta vez, vamos a enfocarnos en intercambios
orales partiendo de la gramática estudiada. Utilizaremos “frases modales” para
expresar diferentes acciones, como habilidad, obligación o permiso.
Anteriormente estudiamos los verbos modales; precisamente en la semana
3 de este semestre repasamos frases para expresar prohibiciones o actuaciones no permitidas utilizando verbos modales como can, should, might, must.

3 y revisa la tabla 4 (Expressing prohibition), donde verás dos columnas, una
para frases y otra para verbos modales.

Tu reto esta semana será enunciar mensajes bien formados y significativos con frases modales utilizadas en contextos adecuados, así como también aplicar las reglas gramaticales aprendidas en la construcción de nuevos
mensajes.

Hay varias instrucciones importantes para el uso de los verbos modales;
veamos:

All the single-word modals are followed by the simple form of verbs:
Not this:
*He may knows the answer.
or this: *He may knowing the answer.
or this:
*He may knew the answer.
but this:
üHe may know the answer.
There are both single-word
modals and phrasal modals.
The single-word modals are: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should,
will, would.
Phrasal modals include the following: be able to, be going to, be supposed to, had better, have to, have got to, ought to, used to.
One of the phrasal modals, “had better”,
does not include “to”. Use the simple form
of a verb after had better: He’d better help
us. (not *He’d better to help us.)

En anteriores ocasiones hemos estudiado los verbos modales. Vamos a enfocarnos en dos frases modales para expresar diferentes acciones o situaciones. Estas frases modales son: ought to y had better.

Ought to se utiliza para dar consejo o recomendaciones. También expresa
expectativa o situación esperada, como una probabilidad. La forma negativa
ought not (sin el “to”), no es muy usada. Preferiblemente se niega con should
not o had better not.
• You ought to stop smoking (recomendación).
• Jim ought to get the promotion (probabilidad o expectativa).
• Mark ought not drink so much (consejo).
Usando “ought to” en presente, pasado y futuro
1. She ought to receive the package by now. (presente)
Ella debe recibir el paquete ahora mismo.
2. She ought to have received the package yesterday. (pasado)
Ella debió haber recibido el paquete ayer.
3. She ought to receive the package tonight. (futuro)
Ella debe recibir el paquete esta noche.
Observa que para hablar en presente o en futuro, se utiliza el verbo que
acompaña al modal en presente simple, pero se añade un adverbio de
tiempo (ahora, hoy…). En pasado, se utiliza el tiempo presente perfecto: have + verbo.
Had better se usa para hacer recomendaciones y advertencias. También
puede emplearse para expresar una gran esperanza que se tiene.
Ejemplos:
• You had better take your umbrella with you today (recomendación).
• That bus had better get here soon! (gran esperanza).
• You had better watch the way you talk to me in the future! (advertencia).
La forma negativa es had better not + verbo.
Had better no tiene una traducción exacta
en español; pero puede entenderse como:
“más vale que” o “mejor sería que”. El auxiliar
had puede contraerse: He’d better help us.

Usando “Had better” en presente, pasado, y futuro
Had better solo se usa en futuro, ya que estamos expresando un hecho que
no ha ocurrido ni está ocurriendo; se trata de una esperanza, una advertencia
o una recomendación.
• You had better unplug the toaster before you try to clean it.
Más vale que desenchufes la tostadora antes de que la limpies.
• They had better be here before we start dinner.
Más vale que ellos estén aquí antes de comenzar la cena.
• They had better not forget Tom’s birthday gift.
Más vale que ellos no olviden el regalo de Tom.
Todas las acciones que estamos expresando con “had better” no han
ocurrido, son posibilidades.

5. Encierra en un círculo el verbo modal correcto en cada oración.

Evalúa tu propio desempeño y el de tus compañeros. Fíjate en el diálogo
“The Photocopier” de la BBC que revisaste anteriormente. Reúnanse en parejas
para escribir y dramatizar (en el CCA) un diálogo similar, utilizando las frases
modales que vimos.
