PRODUCT IS INTENDED FOR HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY
• The probe tip cavity is protected by a permanent soft plastic filter.
This probe tip filter is very delicate and has to be clean and intact
to ensure accurate readings. If it becomes necessary to clean the
probe tip filter, refer to “Cleaning the Probe Tip Filter” instructions
on page 17.
• Every new Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer comes with
a probe cover installed on the probe. Prior to using the
thermometer, check that the probe cover is not damaged. Replace
the probe cover if necessary. Refer to the “Replacing the Probe
Cover” instructions on page 12. Always use a new probe cover
before a new measurement is taken or when the thermometer is
stored. The new probe cover will ensure accurate results and will
protect the probe tip filter during storage.
Important Information, cont.
• Always check the probe tip filter when a probe cover is replaced
before use. If the probe tip filter is soiled, refer to the “Cleaning
the Probe Tip Filter” instructions on page 17.
• Do not use the thermometer if the probe tip filter is damaged.
• When the ambient temperature of the room where the
thermometer is stored changes suddenly, such as moving the
thermometer from one place of lower temperature to another
place of higher temperature, allow the thermometer to remain in
the new place for a minimum of 30 minutes before taking a
new reading.
• Keep probe covers away from children and pets.
• Temperatures should be taken under the supervision of an adult.

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer.
The Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer will allow you to take an
accurate temperature, quickly and easily.
The ear, specifically the tympanic membrane (eardrum), is an excellent
area of the body in which to take a temperature. Because the eardrum
shares blood vessels with the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that
controls body temperature, temperatures taken from the eardrum
more accurately reflect core body temperature than other popular
temperature measurement areas (oral, rectal, underarm).
Not only does the eardrum provide an accurate indication of core
body temperature, it also is unaffected by things that can affect an
oral temperature reading such as crying, rapid breathing, smoking,
drinking, or talking. Ear temperatures also alleviate the discomfort and
risk associated with taking rectal temperatures.
How the Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer Measures Body Temperature

Ear Canal
The Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer measures infrared energy
given off by the eardrum and the surrounding tissue. The energy is
collected through the thermometer probe tip filter and converted to a
temperature value.
When measuring ear temperatures, it is important that readings are
obtained directly from the eardrum (tympanic membrane).
Measurements taken from the surrounding tissues of the ear canal
generate lower readings and may result in misdiagnosis of a fever
(see diagram).
The ergonomic design of the Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer,
coupled with the proper techniques, helps ensure that the thermometer
is exposed to the hottest portion, the eardrum, and not just the cooler
ear canal, thus promoting accurate and fast results.

Oral temperatures are generally considered accurate and are most
frequently used.
In order to provide you with the most familiar frame of reference,
the Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer automatically converts and
displays ear measurements as oral reference temperature.
The Nexcare ™ Instant Ear Thermometer has been tested in a
laboratory environment and proven to be safe and accurate in
accordance with its directions. A probe cover is used to ensure
accuracy and sanitary conditions with every measurement. Do not
use the thermometer without a probe cover.
• Proper technique is very important to obtaining accurate
results. Please take the time to read this instruction manual
completely before using the thermometer and keep it handy for
future reference.

1.Remove the protective cover from the thermometer by pushing
up the tab at the bottom of the protective cover.
2.Press the ON/M button once to turn on the thermometer.
3.The full display will come on to show that the unit is working
properly.
4.It will be followed by the “°F”, the battery, the probe cover
is a
and the “READY” symbols. The Probe Cover symbol
reminder that a new probe cover should always be installed
before taking a temperature. Please refer to the “Replacing the
Probe Cover” instructions on pages 12-13.
5.When the “READY” symbol stops blinking, the thermometer is
ready to take a reading.

6.To straighten the ear canal, tug the ear as described in the
photos on this page. For children under 1 year old, pull the ear
straight back.
7.For adults or children over 1 year old, pull the ear up and back.
8.Gently and carefully place the thermometer probe tip snugly
into the ear canal while tugging the ear.
9.When the probe is properly seated in the ear canal, press and
hold the blue ACTIVATION button. In approximately one second
a short beep will be heard to confirm the end of measurement.
Probe must be snug and fully seated against the opening
of the ear canal throughout the reading. Failure to properly
seat the thermometer probe in the ear canal opening may
result in a lower temperature reading.

10.Remove the thermometer from the ear and record the
temperature reading.
11.Press the BACKLIGHT button and hold it for easy nighttime
reading, if desired.
12.The thermometer will be ready for a new measurement when
the “READY” symbol stops blinking.
13. The thermometer will turn off automatically after one minute.
14. Replace the probe cover. See instructions on the next page.

Replacing the Probe Cover
The used probe cover should be replaced after each measurement
with a new, clean probe cover to ensure accurate readings.
Important: Do not touch the probe tip filter while replacing the
probe cover.
Make sure that the probe cover is firmly attached to the probe. The
cover ring should snap onto the probe base when properly installed,
and the cover over the tip should be taut and wrinkle free. Always
inspect the probe tip filter every time a new probe cover
is replaced.

Twenty probe covers are included with each thermometer, plus
one which is already installed on the unit. For replacement
probe covers, use only Nexcare™ Instant Ear Probe Covers,
catalog No. 524973.
Before storing the thermometer in its protective cover, attach a
new probe cover. The probe cover will protect the thermometer
while in storage and the thermometer will be ready for use
when needed.
If the probe tip filter needs cleaning, refer to the “Cleaning the
Probe Tip Filter” instructions on page 17.
After each use, remove the used probe cover and snap a new one
onto the probe.

The last temperature taken before the thermometer powers down
is stored in the memory when the thermometer is turned off. Up to
8 temperature readings can be stored into the memory (M1 to M8).
The last reading is always at M1. When in the memory mode the M
symbol will be displayed.
By pressing the ON/M button, the memory location (1 to 8) cell
number will be shown on the LCD. After releasing the button, the
stored temperature will be displayed.
NOTE: Unit must be allowed to turn off each time in order to
store the temperature reading in the memory.

Press and hold the ON/M button for at least 5 seconds to erase all
the stored temperatures in memory. “CLr” will be shown on the LCD
display. An empty memory cell will show “---°C” or “---°F”.

Changing the Temperature Scale
With the thermometer power off, press and hold the blue
ACTIVATION button.
While holding the button, press and release the ON/M button. The
display will change from °F to °C or from °C to °F.

Cleaning the Probe Tip Filter
If it becomes necessary to clean the probe tip filter, wipe it very
gently with an alcohol swab or soft cloth moistened with alcohol. Do
not attach a new probe cover immediately; wait at least 30 minutes.
Before use or when storing the thermometer, attach a new probe
cover. A new probe cover will protect the thermometer when stored
inside its protective cover, and the thermometer will be ready for
use when needed.

Replacing the Battery

Make sure the thermometer is off.
Using a small screwdriver, remove the screw holding the battery cover to
the body of the thermometer. Carefully release the battery cover.
Press the battery holder lock to release the battery.
Remove the battery and replace with a new one, type CR2032, with
the positive pole of the battery facing up.
Slide the battery cover back in until it snaps into place and replace
the screw.
Do not dispose of used batteries in household waste.
If the Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer does not turn on following
replacement of the battery, repeat the above procedure and check
the battery alignment or the battery condition.
Temperature Taking Tips
Any obstruction in the ear can affect the ability to obtain an
accurate reading. If a large amount of wax is present, you should
use the other ear. If the person has been sleeping on one ear, use
the other ear or wait a few minutes to allow the temperature inside
the ear to stabilize. It is common for the reading between the
right and left ear to be slightly different.
If you are monitoring temperature during an illness, it is best to use
the same ear for all readings. If you suspect that a reading may be
lower than the actual temperature, you may wish to take multiple
readings and use the highest. Because the ability to get an accurate
temperature is technique dependent, taking multiple readings is
always recommended. Poor technique can cause low readings; it
cannot cause high readings.

We suggest that you practice taking temperatures on healthy
family members. This will help you establish a normal baseline
temperature for each family member. Because normal temperatures
are actually a range of temperatures, each family member may
have a different normal baseline temperature. Knowing each family
member’s normal baseline temperature will allow you to better
diagnose high temperatures.
It is advisable to inform your doctor any time a temperature
is above 100°F (37.8°C). Generally, the higher the temperature,
the more serious it is. Temperatures of 105°F (40.56°C) and above
could be dangerously high. Get medical attention immediately.

Keep the Nexcare™ Instant Ear Thermometer with the probe cover
attached in its protective cover when not in use. Thermometer
should be stored in a clean, dry environment. Do not operate the
device outside the ambient temperature range (41°F to 104°F or
5.0°C to 40.0°C).
Note: If the situations below are applicable, it is recommended
that three temperatures be taken in the same ear. Use the highest
reading if the temperatures taken differ.
The person you are taking the temperature of is a/an:
• Infant that is 90 days old (or younger).
• Child that is under three years of age and has a condition (such
as a compromised immune system) for whom the presence or
absence of fever is critical.

Additionally, if you are a first time user of the Nexcare™ Instant Ear
Thermometer, it is recommended that you take multiple temperatures
in the same ear until you are comfortable with the temperature taking
technique and are obtaining consistent readings.
Important: As is common with any type of thermometer, slight
temperature variations (± 0.3 – 0.5°F / ± 0.2 – 0.3°C) can occur, if
consecutive measurements are taken.
Special Situations
In certain situations, the use of an ear thermometer is not recommended.
These situations include, but are not limited to, the following:
• If the external ear canal has blood or drainage.

• The person you are taking the temperature of has a facial or ear canal
deformity and, as a result, the probe tip filter cannot be fully inserted
into the ear canal.
• Hearing aids or earplug devices should be removed 20 minutes prior
to taking a temperature.
It is recommended that an untreated ear be used if prescription
eardrops or other ear medications have been placed in the ear canal.
Do not attempt to clean inside the ears as you may damage the eardrum
or surrounding tissues. Only excess wax that can be reached and
removed with a washcloth should be cleaned. Consult your physician if
you believe that excess ear wax is present in the ear canal.

defects in materials or workmanship for a period of one year from the
original date of purchase under normal household use. This warranty
extends only to the original retail purchaser, and excludes the batteries

product is not warranted when used in a professional environment.

• La persona a quien le está tomando la temperatura tiene una deformidad
facial o del canal auditivo y, como resultado, no se puede insertar completamente el filtro del extremo del catéter en el conducto auditivo externo.
• Se deben retirar los aparatos de corrección auditiva o los tapones de oídos
20 minutos antes de tomar la temperatura.
Es recomendable tomar la temperatura del oído sin tratamiento si se han
administrado gotas recetadas para el oído u otros medicamentos en el
conducto auditivo externo.
No intente limpiar el interior de los oídos, porque puede dañar el tímpano y los
tejidos circundantes. Sólo se debe limpiar el exceso de cerumen que se puede
alcanzar y retirar con un paño. Si considera que tiene exceso de cerumen en el
conducto auditivo externo, consulte con su médico.

Si es la primera vez que usa un termómetro instantáneo para el oído
Nexcare™, se recomienda que tome varias lecturas de temperatura en
el mismo oído hasta que se sienta cómodo con la técnica para tomar la
temperatura y obtenga lecturas congruentes.
Importante: Como es común con cualquier tipo de termómetro, puede haber
ligeras variaciones de temperatura (± 0.3 – 0.5° F / ± 0.2 – 0.3° C) cuando
se toman mediciones consecutivas.
Situaciones especiales
En algunas situaciones no es recomendable emplear termómetros para el
oído. Estas situaciones incluyen, entre otras:
• Si el conducto auditivo externo tiene sangre o secreción.

Cuando no esté en uso, mantenga el termómetro instantáneo para el oído
Nexcare™ dentro de su cubierta protectora, con la cubierta del catéter
colocada. El termómetro se debe almacenar en un ambiente limpio y seco.
No ponga a funcionar el dispositivo a una temperatura ambiente fuera del
rango (de 41° F a 104° F o de 5.0° C a 40.0° C).
Nota: Si son válidas las siguientes situaciones, se recomienda que se tomen
tres lecturas de temperatura en el mismo oído. Use la lectura más alta, si las
temperaturas son diferentes.
La persona a quien le está tomando la temperatura es un:
• Bebé de 90 días de edad (o menor).
• Niño menor de tres años de edad y presenta alguna afección (tal como un
sistema inmunológico comprometido) para quien la presencia o ausencia
de fiebre es crítica.

Sugerimos que practique al tomar la temperatura de los miembros saludables
de la familia. Lo anterior le ayudará a establecer la temperatura normal de
referencia para cada miembro de la familia. Debido a que las temperaturas
normales constituyen realmente un rango de temperaturas, cada miembro de
la familia puede tener diferente temperatura normal de referencia. Conocer la
temperatura normal de referencia de cada miembro de la familia le permitirá
diagnosticar mejor las temperaturas altas.
Es recomendable que le informe a su médico cuando una lectura de
temperatura sea superior a 100° F (37.8° C). Por lo general, cuanto más
alta sea la temperatura, más grave es la condición. Las temperaturas de
105° F (40.56° C) y mayores pueden ser muy peligrosas. Obtenga atención
médica de inmediato.

Consejos para tomar la temperatura
Cualquier obstrucción en el oído puede afectar la obtención de lecturas
exactas. Si hay demasiado cerumen, tome la temperatura del otro oído. Si la
persona ha estado durmiendo recostada sobre un oído, tome la temperatura
del otro oído o espere unos minutos para que se estabilice la temperatura
interna del oído. Es común que las lecturas del oído derecho y del
izquierdo sean ligeramente diferentes.
Si está controlando la temperatura durante una enfermedad, es mejor usar el
mismo oído para tomar todas las lecturas. Si sospecha que una lectura sea
más baja que la temperatura real, es recomendable tomar varias lecturas
y usar la más alta. Debido a que la capacidad de obtener lecturas exactas
de temperatura depende de la técnica, siempre se recomienda tomar varias
lecturas. Una mala técnica puede ocasionar lecturas más bajas; no dará
lecturas más altas.

Reemplazo de la batería
Asegúrese de que el termómetro esté apagado.
Con un destornillador pequeño, retire el tornillo que sostiene la cubierta de la
batería del termómetro. Cuidadosamente suelte la cubierta de la batería.
Para soltar la batería, presione el seguro del soporte de la batería.
Retire la batería y coloque una nueva, tipo CR2032, con el polo positivo de
la batería orientado hacia arriba.
Deslice de nuevo la cubierta de la batería hasta que encaje en su lugar
y vuelva a colocar el tornillo.
No tire las baterías usadas en la basura.
Si el termómetro instantáneo para el oído Nexcare™ no enciende después de
cambiar la batería, repita el procedimiento anterior, revise que la batería esté
alineada así como el estado de la batería.

Limpieza del filtro del extremo del catéter
Si es necesario limpiar el filtro del extremo del catéter, límpielo muy
cuidadosamente con un hisopo con alcohol o con un paño suave humedecido
con alcohol. No coloque inmediatamente una nueva cubierta del catéter;
espere por lo menos 30 minutos.
Antes de usar o almacenar el termómetro, coloque una nueva cubierta del
catéter. Una cubierta nueva protegerá el termómetro cuando se almacene
dentro de su cubierta protectora y el termómetro estará listo para usarlo
cuando se necesite.

Al apagar el termómetro, se almacena en la memoria la última temperatura
que se tomó antes de apagarlo. Se puede almacenar en la memoria un
máximo de 8 lecturas de temperatura (M1 a M8). La última lectura siempre
corresponde a la M1. Cuando se encuentre en el modo de memoria, se
mostrará el símbolo M.
Al presionar el botón ON/M (encendido/medición) se mostrará en la pantalla
LCD el número de celda correspondiente a la ubicación de memoria (1 a 8).
Al soltar el botón, se mostrará la temperatura almacenada.
NOTA: Para que la lectura de temperatura quede almacenada en la
memoria, se debe dejar que se apague la unidad cada vez.

Con cada termómetro se incluyen veinte cubiertas de catéter más una
que ya viene instalada en la unidad. Como cubiertas de reemplazo de
catéter, use únicamene las Cubiertas de catéter instanáneas para el oído
Nexcare™, N.° de catálogo 524973.
Antes de almacenar el termómetro en su cubierta protectora, coloque
la nueva cubierta de catéter. La cubierta de catéter protegerá el
termómetro mientras se encuentra almacenado y estará listo para usarlo
cuando se necesite.
Si necesita limpiar el filtro del extremo del catéter, consulte las instrucciones
“Limpieza del filtro del extremo del catéter” en la página 17.
Después de cada uso, retire la cubierta del catéter usada y encaje una nueva
en el catéter.

Reemplazo de la cubierta del catéter
Después de cada medición se debe reemplazar la cubierta del catéter ya
usada con una nueva cubierta para garantizar lecturas exactas.
Importante: Cuando reemplace la cubierta del catéter, no toque el filtro
del extremo del catéter.
Asegúrese de que la cubierta del catéter esté colocada firmemente en el
catéter. Cuando se instala adecuadamente, el anillo de la cubierta debe
encajar en la base del catéter y la cubierta del extremo debe quedar tensa
y sin arrugas. Siempre revise el filtro del extremo del catéter cada vez que
coloque una nueva cubierta del catéter.

10.Retire el termómetro para el oído y registre la lectura de temperatura.
11.Si desea, presione el botón BACKLIGHT (retroiluminación) y sosténgalo
para facilitar las lecturas durante la noche.
12.El termómetro estará listo para realizar una nueva medición cuando el
símbolo “READY” (listo) deje de destellar.
13. El termómetro se apagará automáticamente después de un minuto.

6.Para que el canal auditivo quede recto, jale la oreja como se describe en
las figuras de esta página. En el caso de niños menores de un año de
edad, jale la oreja derecha hacia atrás.
7.En el caso de adultos y niños mayores de un año de edad, jale la oreja
hacia arriba y hacia atrás.
8.Suavemente y con cuidado coloque ajustadamente el extremo del catéter
del termómetro dentro del canal auditivo mientras jala la oreja.
9.Cuando el catéter esté colocada adecuadamente dentro del canal
auditivo, presione y sostenga el botón azul ACTIVATION (activación).
Aproximadamente un segundo después, se escuchará un pitido corto
para indicar la finalización de la medición.
El catéter debe estar ajustada y bien colocada contra la abertura del
canal auditivo durante la lectura. Si no se coloca adecuadamente
el catéter en el canal auditivo, como resultado se pueden obtener
lecturas de temperatura más bajas.

1.Para retirar la cubierta protectora del termómetro, empuje hacia arriba
la lengüeta de la parte inferior de la cubierta protectora.
2.Presione el botón ON/M (encendido/medición) una vez para encender
el termómetro.
3.Se mostrará la pantalla completa como demostración de que la unidad
funciona correctamente.
4.Luego aparecerán los símbolos de “°F”, de la batería, de la cubierta
del catéter y “READY” (listo). El símbolo de la cubierta del catéter
es un recordatorio de que siempre se debe instalar una nueva cubierta
del catéter antes de tomar una temperatura. Consulte las instrucciones
“Reemplace la cubierta del catéter” en las páginas 12-13.
5.Cuando el símbolo “READY” (listo) deja de ser intermitente, el termómetro
está listo para tomar una lectura.

Por lo general, la temperatura oral se considera exacta y es la que se usa con
más frecuencia.
Para brindarle un marco de referencia más familiar, el termómetro instantáneo
para el oído Nexcare™ de manera automática convierte las mediciones de
temperatura del oído y las muestra como temperaturas orales de referencia.
Se han hecho pruebas en un ambiente de laboratorio con el termómetro
instantáneo para el oído Nexcare™ y se ha probado que es seguro y exacto,
de acuerdo con sus indicaciones. La cubierta del catéter se usa para
garantizar la exactitud y las condiciones sanitarias en cada medición.
No use el termómetro sin cubierta de catéter.
• Para obtener resultados exactos es muy importante usar la técnica
adecuada. Lea detenidamente el manual de instrucciones completo
antes de usar el termómetro y manténgalo a mano para referencia
en el futuro.

El Termómetro instantáneo para el oído Nexcare™ mide la energía infrarroja
que genera el tímpano y los tejidos circundantes. La energía se mide por
medio del filtro del extremo del catéter del termómetro y se convierte en un
valor de temperatura.
Cuando se mida la temperatura del oído, es importante que las lecturas se
obtengan directamente del tímpano (membrana timpánica).
Las mediciones que se toman de los tejidos circundantes del canal auditivo
generan lecturas más bajas y pueden conducir a un mal diagnóstico de fiebre
(consulte el diagrama).
El diseño ergonómico del termómetro instantáneo para el oído Nexcare™,
junto con las técnicas apropiadas, permite garantizar que el termómetro se
exponga al tímpano, que es la porción con temperatura más alta y no sólo al
canal auditivo que tiene temperatura más baja, lo que fomenta la obtención

El termómetro instantáneo para el oído Nexcare™ le permitirá tomar la
temperatura de manera exacta, rápida y fácil.
El oído, específicamente la membrana timpánica (tímpano), es una excelente
área del cuerpo para tomar la temperatura. Debido a que el tímpano comparte
vasos sanguíneos con el hipotálamo, la parte del cerebro que controla la
temperatura corporal, las lecturas de temperatura que se toman en el tímpano
reflejan con más exactitud la temperatura corporal central que otras áreas
populares para tomar la temperatura (oral, rectal, axilar).
Aparte de proporcionar una indicación exacta de la temperatura corporal
central, el tímpano no se ve afectado por las actividades que pueden afectar la
lectura de la temperatura oral, tales como llorar, respirar rápidamente, fumar,
beber o hablar. La medición de la temperatura en el oído también evita la
molestia y el riesgo asociado con la medición de temperatura rectal.

• Siempre revise el filtro del extremo del catéter cuando se reemplace
cualquier cubierta de catéter antes de usarla. Si el filtro del extremo del
catéter está sucio, consulte las instrucciones “Limpieza del filtro del extremo
del catéter” en la página 17.
• No use el termómetro, si el filtro del extremo del catéter está dañado.
• Cuando la temperatura ambiente de la habitación en donde se almacena
el termómetro cambia súbitamente, como sucede cuando se mueve el
termómetro de un lugar de temperatura más baja a un lugar de temperatura
más alta, deje el termómetro en el nuevo sitio durante un mínimo de
30 minutos antes de tomar una nueva lectura.
• Mantenga las cubiertas del catéter fuera del alcance de los niños
y de mascotas.
• La temperatura se debe tomar bajo la supervisión de un adulto.

• La cavidad del extremo del catéter está protegida por un filtro permanente de
plástico blando. El filtro del extremo del catéter es muy delicado y debe estar
limpio e intacto para garantizar lecturas exactas. Si es necesario limpiar el
filtro del extremo del catéter, consulte las instrucciones “Limpieza del filtro
del extremo del catéter” en la página 17.
• Cada termómetro instantáneo para el oído Nexcare™ trae instalada de
fábrica una cubierta en el catéter. Antes de usar el termómetro, revise que la
cubierta del catéter no esté dañada. Si es necesario, reemplace la cubierta
del catéter. Consulte las instrucciones “Reemplazo de la cubierta del catéter”
en la página 12. Siempre use una nueva cubierta de catéter antes de tomar
una nueva lectura o cuando almacene el termómetro. La cubierta de catéter
nueva garantiza resultados exactos y protege el filtro del extremo del catéter
mientras se encuentre almacenada.
