Yet, more than two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health. calories and rich in fiber, such as whole-wheat bread, pasta, and brown rice. Since fiber takes longer to digest, it will make you feel full longer and less likely to crave high-calorie snacks. unt Sinai Medical Center | Brand Guidelines To lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit, which means burning off more calories than you consume. Calories are units of energy that are found in food. “Aim for controlled, sustainable weight loss of about half to one pound a week,” advises Fran Grossman, RD, MS, CDE, CDN, a nutrition consultant at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Modifying the portions and kinds of foods you eat is the key to curbing calories. Switch to unrefined grains that are low in 3 Buy foods that are low in fat and sugar, including fruits and vegetables. Increasing your protein intake—particularly first thing in the morning—is also important. The body exerts more energy metabolizing foods that are high in proteins—beans, eggs, nuts, for example—and lean meats, such as chicken and fish. “A good weight-loss program should reduce your calorie, sugar, and fat intake through portion control, without restricting entire food groups,” adds Ms. Grossman. “It should also incorporate physical activity."
