Name_________________________________________________________ Appendix B Date __________ Financial Literacy Dear Family, Have you and your student started saving for college? College will introduce your student to many areas of personal finance: savings accounts, loans, credit cards, and payroll deductions. People often have to save for college over a long period of time—putting money in a savings account faithfully over time. Compound interest provides a way to build on your savings. Even with planning, many people simply cannot save as much as they will need for college—making college loans and grants a common experience. College students are often offered credit or debit cards and it is hard to avoid these convenient forms of payment. • Ask your student to research different types of savings plans at local banks. Have them figure out how much $50 will yield four years from now. How many $50 dollar deposits should they make to reach their goal? • Ask your student to research different types of financing at the colleges they are considering. How much do students at each college typically have to borrow? Have your student figure out how much their payments will be for that amount. • Ask your student to describe the difference between a credit card and a debit card. Have him or her research interest rates on credit cards. How do these rates compare to college loan interest rates? Is there a strategy your student can use to avoid credit card interest? Many students will have jobs while in school to help offset their expenses. Students are often shocked the first time they get a paycheck and realize they don't get to keep all of their earnings! Ask your student to estimate the percentage of a $100 paycheck that he or she will get to keep. Have your student research the deductions that are taken and compare it to the estimate. How will this affect your savings goals? Usually students are excited about their future—and with good reason. There are many opportunities for students regardless of their means. Planning ahead will make the experience less stressful for everyone. Best wishes for a happy future! Copyright © Big Ideas Learning, LLC All rights reserved. 360 Big Ideas Math Blue Resources by Chapter Copyright © Big Ideas Learning, LLC All rights reserved.
