WORD FROM THE PASTOR
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
In the antiphon of the responsorial Psalm for this Fifth Sunday of Lent we ask the Lord to create in each one of us a clean heart. This petition immediately reminds us, of course of the Beatitude found in the Sermon on the Mount in chapter 5 verse 8 of the Gospel according
to St. Matthew, “Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God.” Therefore, when we ask the Lord to create in us a clean heart, one
could argue that it logically follows that we are asking Him that we may able to see His face.
Interestingly, the Gospel passage proclaimed this Sunday tells us that there were some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover
feast and contact Philip who has a Greek name because they “want to see Jesus.”
Seeing God or at least the desire to see Him and the conditions to see Him appear very prominently in the readings this Sunday.
We do not have to wait until we die to see God face to face,although we know with the certainty of faith that that will be the case and we
hope on that day to hear the words of the Gospel of Mathew, “Come blessed of my Father,” addressed directly to us.
We also know that we literally see Jesus every time we come before the Blessed Sacrament, which is his Body and Blood, really and substantially present. That is why if we are aware of serious sin we go to Confession before we receive the Eucharist so that the Lord can do
what we are asking Him to do in our Psalm prayer today, create a clean heart in us, a heart that is prepared to receive Him.
We also see Jesus in our brothers and sisters, especially in those who are suffering, the vulnerable, those considered disposable by society,
a fact that our beloved Holy Father Francis constantly reminds us, lest we also fall in the “globalization of indifference.”
Seeing God is a universal and constant longing of the human person who is created out of love and for love. Every single human being
longs for perfect and infinite love that only God can offer and, in that sense, deep down, what we all desire is an encounter with God, even
if many of us do not yet realize it.

In his encyclical, God is Love, the beloved Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, tells us that the proper organ to see God is the heart, the inner
core of our humanity. It is there where we encounter Him and are able to see Him. That does not mean, however, that our relationship
with God is pure subjectivity, an inward turn of our life in order to launch on a quest to go to our inner self to find God. On the contrary,
an intimate encounter with the Lord at the deepest level of our being is only possible if we allow Him to enter into our lives, fill us with
His love and life by self-emptying ourselves in imitation of Him who, as St. Paul says in the Letter to the Philippians, though He was in
the form of God did not deem equality with God something to be grasped at, but rather emptied Himself and became obedient unto death
and death on a Cross.

Ultimately, being able to see God is a grace, pure gift. It is the Lord who creates a clean heart in us that we can see Him. Yet, as is always
the case, the gift of grace that is freely offered to every person has to be received, treasured and nurtured.
To be able to see Christ we must first allow Him to shape our hearts after his own heart and for that to happen we have to remove the
clutter, thus, the importance of the season of Lent and its penitential practices, its emphasis on prayer and works of mercy. Prayer, fasting
and almsgiving prepare the way for the Lord to come to us, clean our hearts and make them ready for that “visual contact” with Him that
transforms our lives bringing peace, fulfillment and joy even in the face of the most difficult circumstances.
There are many in our times, like the Greeks in the Gospel proclaimed this Sunday, who have yet to see Jesus. Perhaps, some of them have
heard about him and are seeking Him. There are others who may not have even heard of Him or have a very distorted image of Christ and
His Church.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:
En la antífona del salmo responsorial para este quinto domingo de Cuaresma, le pedimos al Señor que cree en cada uno de nosotros un
corazón puro. Esta plegaria nos recuerda inmediatamente, por supuesto la Bienaventuranza que encontramos en el Sermón de la Montaña
en el capítulo 5, versículo 8 del Evangelio según san Mateo: “Felices los limpios de corazón porque ellos verán a Dios.” Por lo tanto podría
decirse que cuando le pedimos al Señor que cree en nosotros un corazón puro, lógicamente se deduce que en cierta forma le estamos pidiendo que nos permita ver su rostro.
Es interesante notar que en el pasaje del Evangelio que se proclama este domingo nos cuentan que algunos griegos que habían llegado a
adorar a Dios en la fiesta de la Pascua se acercan a Felipe, quien tiene un nombre griego, porque quieren “ver a Jesús”
Ver a Dios, o por lo menos, el deseo de verlo y las condiciones necesarias para verlo se destacan en las lecturas de este domingo.
No tenemos que esperar hasta el día que muramos para ver a Dios cara a cara, aunque sabemos con la certeza de la fe que eso ocurrirá y
confiamos que en ese día escucharemos dirigidas en primera persona a cada uno de nosotros las palabras del Evangelio según san Mateo:
“Vengan benditos de mi Padre”.

También sabemos que literalmente vemos a Jesús cada vez que estamos enfrente del Santísimo Sacramento, que es su Cuerpo y su Sangre
real y sustancialmente presente. Por eso, si estamos consientes de un pecado grave, vamos a confesarnos antes de recibir la Eucaristía, para
que el Señor haga lo que le estamos pidiendo en nuestra oración con el salmo de este domingo, cree un corazón puro, un corazón que está
preparado para recibirlo.
También vemos a Jesús en nuestros hermanos, especialmente los que sufren, los vulnerables, aquellos que la sociedad considera descartables, un hecho que el amado Santo Padre Francisco constantemente nos recuerda, no sea cosa que caigamos en la “globalización de la
indiferencia”.
Ver a Dios es un deseo universal y constante de toda persona humana, creada por amor y para el amor. Todo ser humano desea, busca el
amor perfecto e infinito que solo Dios puede ofrecer. En el fondo de nuestro ser, aunque algunos no se den cuenta todavía, lo que deseamos
es un encuentro con Dios.
En su encíclica Dios es Amor, el amado Papa Emérito, Benedicto XVI, nos dice que el órgano adecuado para ver a Dios es el corazón, el
centro mismo de nuestra humanidad. Es ahí donde se produce el encuentro con El y podemos verlo. Pero eso no significa que nuestra relación con Dios sea pura subjetividad, una vuelta sobre uno mismo para lanzarse en un derrotero que nos lleva al interior para encontrar a
Dios. Al contrario, ese íntimo encuentro con Dios en el nivel más profundo de nuestro ser es únicamente posible si lo dejamos que entre en
nuestras vidas, nos llene con su amor y su vida, anonadándonos nosotros mismos a imitación de Aquel que, como dice san Pablo en la carta
a los Filipenses, no hizo alarde de su naturaleza divina, sino que se anonadó y se hizo obediente hasta la muerte en la cruz.
En última instancia, poder ver a Dios es una gracia, un don. Es el Señor el que crea el corazón puro que nos permite verlo. Sin embargo,
como ocurre siempre, el don de la gracia que se nos ofrece libremente tiene que ser recibido, atesorado y cultivado. Para poder ver a Cristo
hay que dejarlo que forme nuestros corazones según el suyo y para que eso pase tenemos que eliminar aquello que ocupa espacio en nuestro
corazón. De ahí la importancia del tiempo de Cuaresma, sus prácticas penitenciales y su énfasis en la oración y las obras de misericordia.
La oración, el ayuno y la limosna preparan el camino para que el Señor venga hasta nosotros, limpian nuestro corazón y lo preparan para el
“contacto visual” con Aquel que transforma nuestras vidas trayendo, paz, plenitud y alegría aún en medio de circunstancias muy difíciles.
Hay muchas personas en nuestro tiempo que, como los griegos en el Evangelio de este domingo, todavía no han visto a Jesús. Tal vez alguno
haya oído de El y lo busca. Hay otros que quizás nunca oyeron de El o tienen una imagen de Cristo y de su Iglesia muy distorsionada.
Por el don del Bautismo, los cristianos somos discípulos de Cristo. Tenemos que ser Felipe para alguien que está cerca nuestro. Cada uno de
nosotros. Tenemos que vivir nuestra vida de manera que aquellos que son movidos por la gracia a un encuentro con Cristo, puedan ver en
nosotros un recurso que los pueda llevar a un encuentro más profundo con El, el único que puede satisfacer los deseos de todo corazón por
amor perfecto e infinito, paz, justicia y la intensa alegría que generan.
