Interim Superintendent April 27, 2009 To all Wichita Falls ISD families, Human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection have been identified in the United States with two cases in Texas. Spread of the swine influenza virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. Swine flu symptoms include fever, lethargy, cough, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. How does this affect Wichita Falls ISD? While the local Health Department reports no case of the swine flu in Wichita County, students and employees are asked to adhere to the same precautions used during the influenza season. These include: 1. frequent and adequate hand washing 2. covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a disposable tissue or into your sleeve, not into your hands 3. staying home from school if running a temperature above 100.4 degrees 4. staying home for 24 hours after fever free without medication. Please know that the school district is working closely with the local Health Department monitoring any flu cases should they occur. At that point, the district would follow health guidelines for action to be taken. Superintendente Interino 27 de abril de 2009 A todas las familias del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Wichita Falls, En los Estados Unidos se han identificado casos en humanos de infección con el virus de la gripe porcina (Influenza A H1N1), y dos de dichos casos fueron detectados en Texas. El contagio de la gripe porcina ocurre del mismo modo que el contagio de la gripe estacional. El virus se transmite principalmente de persona a persona cuando los enfermos de gripe tosen o estornudan. En algunas ocasiones, el contagio se realiza por contacto cuando una persona toca algo que contiene el virus y luego se toca la boca o la nariz. Los síntomas de la gripe porcina son: fiebre, cansancio, tos, dolor de garganta, nauseas, vómitos y diarrea. ¿Cómo afecta esto a Wichita Falls ISD? Aunque el Departamento de Salud no haya informado sobre casos de gripe porcina en el Condado de Wichita, les solicitamos a los estudiantes y empleados que se apeguen a las medidas de precaución durante la estación de gripe. Las mismas incluyen: 1. Lavarse las manos correcta y frecuentemente. 2. Cubrirse la boca y la nariz al toser o estornudar, preferiblemente con un pañuelo descartable o con la manga, no con la mano. 3. Permanecer en el hogar y no concurrir a la escuela si tiene fiebre superior a 100.4ºF (38ºC). 4. Permanecer en el hogar las 24 horas siguientes aunque la fiebre haya desaparecido sin medicación. Deseamos hacerles saber que el distrito escolar está trabajando en estrecha colaboración con el Departamento de Salud para controlar la aparición de casos de gripe. Si ocurriera, el distrito implementará las medidas sanitarias correspondientes.
