To Him be glory forever and ever” 2 Timothy 4:17-18
My dear parishioners,
It is a great joy to be a priest. It is now my privilege to be your priest at Nativity after fourteen years at All Saints in
Manassas. It is a time for me of letting go and being open to a new beginning of living and ministering with you. The
constant in this is our life together in Christ who is the same “yesterday, today and forever.” Christ is our “rock” and the
foundation on which we build our lives. On this Feast of Saint Peter and Paul we hear in the scriptures that we are to build
on a strong foundation. You are a part of the building...a spiritual building. You are holy...you are the Church of living
stones.
I want to thank Fr. Bill Korpi, Fr. Cedric Wilson, Deacon Avery and Deacon Pardo, Sr. Donatella and Sr. Mary
Attilla, the parish staff, parish leadership and ministers for the significant part each of you share to make Nativity a
community of love and faith...and especially during the recent time of grieving the loss of your beloved pastor, Fr. Dick
Martin. I join you in mourning his sudden death and in celebrating his friendship, love and examples of discipleship. What a
gift Fr. Martin is to us. As we remember and pray for him, I am sure Fr. Martin is deflecting some of these prayers back to
us. I will live in his spirit as your new priest chosen to continue his good work. I look forward to meeting you and
celebrating God’s love with you in all the special moments that make life so beautiful.
Today we honor two great heroes of our faith, two mighty martyrs who gave witness to Christ by how they lived
and sacrificed for the mission of the gospel. Nativity parish can add another “hero” to that group of holy men and women
the Church always honors…..Fr. Martin….. who we pray with sure and certain hope now hails from that great communion
of Saints.

The Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul
This Sunday, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul. These two eminent apostles, Peter
known as the “Prince of the Apostles”, and Paul, “the Apostle of the Gentiles”, have been venerated throughout the Christian world since the days of the early Church. While their personalities were quite different,
their names are almost always mentioned together. They were both martyred in Rome during the reign of Nero. Peter was
crucified upside down, and Paul, because he was a Roman citizen was beheaded. Artists throughout the centuries show the
two apostles together, Peter with the keys to the Kingdom as a sign of his authority, Paul, holding a scroll as a symbol of his
great teaching. Often they are depicted on either side of an altar or on either side of a base or arch. They are considered
two pillars of the Church, different and distinct, but supporting the whole. Two great churches were built in Rome by Constantine, in their honor: Saint Peter’s Basilica and Saint Paul-Outside-the-Walls. Recent archeological diggings seem to
indicate that each saint is buried in the church that bears his name.

BUILDING PROJECT
Our Parish Center/Classroom/Offices
Building Project is advancing to the next
stage of selecting a general contractor. The
Diocesan Planning and Construction Office is conducting the bidding process and will provide a
recommendation for contract award. At this phase, we willreview the current status of cost/budget/pledges/
contributions/and cash-in-hand status to ensure that we have
a strong financial plan in place that will allow us to begin.
We will continue to update the parish in the coming weeks
so all are aware of the construction projects impact. It’s an
exciting “vision” that all our prayers, sacrifices and generosity will make a reality.

The monthly food collection will take
place next Sunday, July 6th. Please bring
non-perishable foods to the foyer of the
church. In this time of need, food pantries
are being rapidly depleted. Vegetable oil,
jelly, flour/sugar #2, pancake syrup and
mix, tomato sauce/paste, boxed or bagged rice, jello/
pudding, canned meats, bagged beans, mustard, ketsup
and mayo, juices, laundry detergent, facial tissues and
assorted personal items are needed. All canned food
items are welcomed. ECHO also accepts small appliances. For more information pick up a brochure in the

The Craft Group is looking for new
members. There is no age limit, no experience needed... only a desire to meet new
people and do crafts. Beginners, intermediates and experienced ladies are welcome.
All supplies are donated, no need to bring
your own. The projects made are sold at the December Bazaar.
The proceeds from the Bazaar are given to local charities. The
Craft Group meets every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00am in

Each year the Knights of Columbus select a Knight of the
Year and a Family of the Year. This Year the Knight of the
Year is Tony Adams, who is retiring after 15 years as the
Council’s Financial Secretary. The Family of the Year is the
Savage family. Tom and Cindy and their daughters Caitlyn
and Ali were selected for the work they do in the Council and

Installation Of Officers:
The Knights of Columbus installation of officers for the next

2014 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) – Summer Update
Thank you Nativity parishioners for donating and pledging to this year's Bishop’s
Lenten Appeal! As of June 19, we received
$467,548, about 94% of our $500,000 goal,
with 24% families participating. This has
been another year of great caring by the Church of the
Nativity to the Arlington Diocese's many needy charities

FR. MARTIN TO BE HONORED WITH
NEW VILLAGE
A “showcase” village will be built in Haiti in memory of Fr.
Richard Martin, former Pastor of Church of the Nativity. Fr.
Martin died suddenly in May, 2014.
The village in Grand Boulage, near Haiti’s capital city of Portau-Prince, will be built by Food For The Poor over the course
of three years, and will combine the latest technology, construction techniques, and community development programs.
The village ultimately will contain 120 houses with indoor
toilets and solar lighting, a community center, a health clinic,
agriculture projects, and a school. The residents will receive
life-skills training, and a variety of social and community development programs will be offered. Continuous experimentation and evaluation will lead to techniques and programs that
can be exported to other communities in Haiti and in the 17
countries where Food For The Poor operates.
This project will be named in memory of Fr. Richard Martin.
Groundbreaking is expected to take place in July, 2014. Funding for the project is coming from gifts to Church of the Nativity in memory of Fr. Martin, along with the proceeds of Nativity’s Operation Starfish© campaign. Gifts in honor of Fr. Martin have exceeded $100,000 as of mid-June. Nativity’s 2014
Lenten Operation Starfish© campaign generated over
$380,000.
Since 1998, Nativity’s Operation Starfish©, working with
Food For The Poor, has developed 9 “Nativity Villages,” including Fish4Hope Village, which we dedicated in February
2014. These village projects have provided decent shelter,
clean drinking water, sanitation, health care, education and
small business opportunities for more than 1,100 families in
Haiti.

PEDRO Y PABLO:
SABOR A UNIDAD

Un año más, la festividad de San Pedro y San Pablo, nos recuerda que Jesús establece una sólida amistad y confianza con las
personas.
Pero, en este caso, “hay amores que matan”. Los dos, columnas de nuestra iglesia, vertieron su sangre, su vida, su ser, sus
talentos para que la obra de Jesús (el gran amigo y tesoro por ellos encontrado) siguiese adelante. ¿Qué vio Jesús en ellos?
1. Celebrar la festividad de estos grandes personajes, de estas grandes tallas humanas y cristianas, es contemplar con
orgullo y con emoción, los primeros años de la misión apostólica. A los dos les unió un mismo afán: la predicación del
evangelio y…a los dos, una misma ciudad, Roma, acogió entre sus muros el doble martirio. El periplo misionero de Pedro y
Pablo, con dificultades, persecuciones y gestas heroicas tuvo un final después de un duro combate: dar la vida por Cristo
no es nada comparado con lo que les esperaba. Así lo sintieron, así lo vivieron y así lo testimoniaron. Su sangre fue la
firma, personal y radical, de dos personas diferentes pero con un denominador común: amor a Jesús.
Uno (Pedro) fue roca, pero a la vez, frágil y apasionado, lleno de valor y del Espíritu Santo. Amigo entrañable de Jesús y
con un corazón que no le cabía en el pecho. Un corazón que, lleno de amor a Cristo, se desbordó con una gran confesión:
“Tú
eres
el
hijo
de
Dios
vivo”.
El segundo (Pablo) fue zarandeado en medio de su principal afición: persiguiendo a los cristianos. Su vida cambió
totalmente camino de Damasco. Empuñó la espada para entregarse sin reservas al anuncio del Evangelio. Su carisma,
fogoso, inteligente, incansable, aventurero, moderno..le hizo ser reconocido por anunciar, con tintes nuevos y universales, la
salvación
de
Jesús:
“Ay
de
mí
si
no
evangelizare”
Hoy, la figura de Pedro, visualizada en el Papa Benedicto XVI, sigue sugiriendo en nosotros el principio visible de la unidad
y la transmisión del depósito de la fe. Todo aquello, que en tiempos de Pedro, quedó atado por indicación del mismo Jesús,
lo sigue ejerciendo con la misma autoridad y el mismo empeño la figura del Papa en la Iglesia Católica.
2. Hoy, más que nunca, contemplamos con optimismo la actitud abierta y positiva de un Papa Benedicto, dispuesto a
reconducir y recuperar lo que, la historia, alteró en la Iglesia: su unidad. A nadie se nos escapa que, unidos, daremos más y
mejor
testimonio
de
Cristo
ante
el
mundo.
Hoy, más que nunca, aún en periodo de pruebas, de dificultades, con San Pedro y San Pablo estamos llamados a ser signo
del poder de Dios. Teniendo, a dos intercesores tan gigantes en el cielo, no tenemos que tener miedo a los enemigos de la fe
ni a los tropiezos en nuestro afán evangelizador: ellos marcharon y cumplieron antes que nosotros. Qué bien lo expresó el
Papa Juan Pablo II en el año 2002 “Quien confía en Dios, libre de todo miedo, experimenta la presencia consoladora del
Espíritu también, y especialmente, en los momentos de la prueba y del dolor”.
No nos podemos quedar satisfechos ni con lo qué hemos conseguido, ni cómo somos, cristianamente hablando. Siguen
existiendo millones de hombres y de mujeres que todavía no han escuchado, ni una sola vez, el nombre de Jesucristo; otros
tantos que, aún siendo bautizados, no lo aman o..lo festejan de una manera relajada o lo viven a la carta; otros, aún
siguiéndole, han roto sus vínculos de unión y de afecto con la Iglesia que, precisamente, les dio ese gran regalo: Jesús.
Actualmente, como siempre y como en los tiempos de Pedro y de Pablo, sigue siendo un gran desafío el ser cristiano; el
manifestar públicamente nuestra fe.
¡Cuántos cristianos que no viven en cárceles pero, su fe, la tienen excesivamente guardada en las celdas de la vergüenza y
del “qué dirán”! ¿Puede ser una fe católica intimista y relegada en el rincón de la conciencia o de una sacristía?
¡Cuántos cristianos que siguen convencidos que, la evangelización, es cuestión de sacerdotes, obispos y de Papas!
¡Cuántos cristianos que viven su fe sin más trascendencia que las celebraciones sacramentales!
¡Cuántos cristianos que sucumben en sus creencias ante una sociedad caprichosa y hedonista!
Miremos a San Pedro y a San Pablo. Pongamos estas dos columnas en los cimientos de nuestra familia, de nuestras
empresas, educación, iglesia, amistades, política, etc.
Renovemos nuestro afecto y nuestra adhesión al Papa Benedicto XVI. Si lo hacemos así, estaremos en sintonía y entraremos
de lleno en el espíritu que marcó los primeros pasos de Pedro y Pablo: la unidad en la fe.

1. CRISTO ES LA PIEDRA FUNDAMENTAL DE
LA IGLESIA. El martirio de los muy bienaventurados
Pedro y Pablo hizo sagrado para nosotros el día de hoy.
No hablamos, pues, de ningún mártir oscuro: Su voz
resonó en toda la tierra y sus palabras llegaron a los confines del mundo. Además, ellos vieron lo que predicaron,
siguieron la equidad, confesaron la verdad y murieron por
ella. Pedro es el primero de los apóstoles y amigo fervoroso de Cristo de quien mereció el oír las palabras: A
mi vez te digo que tú eres Pedro. Había él dicho al Salvador: Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo. El Salvador
díjole entonces: Y yo a mi vez te digo que tú eres Pedro,
y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia. Sobre esta piedra
estableceré la fe que confiesas. Sobre lo que dijiste: Tú
eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo, edificaré mi Iglesia.
Porque tú eres Pedro. Pedro viene de piedra, y no al
revés. Pedro viene de piedra, como cristiano de Cristo.
¿Quieres saber de qué piedra se deriva la palabra Pedro?
Oye a Pablo: No quiero, hermanos, que ignoréis que
nuestros
padres estuvieron todos debajo de la nube, y todos pasaron el mar, y todos fueron bautizados en Moisés, en la
nube y en el mar; y todos comieron de una misma vianda
espiritual, y todos bebieron de una misma bebida espiritual, porque bebían de una piedra espiritual que los iba
siguiendo; y la piedra era Cristo. Ved ahí de dónde viene
Pedro.
2. EN PEDRO SE LE DIERON A LA IGLESIA LAS
LLAVES DEL REINO DE LOS CIELOS.—Antes de
la pasión, como sabéis, selecciona el Señor Jesús a los
discípulos, que denominó apóstoles, y, entre todos, sólo
Pedro mereció personificar a la iglesia casi en todas
partes. Y por esta personificación que sólo él ostentaba,
mereció el oír: Yo te daré las llaves del reino de los
cielos. Estas llaves no las recibió un hombre, sino la unidad de la Iglesia. Lo que hace, pues, descollar la preeminencia de Pedro, es haber personificado la universalidad y
unidad de la Iglesia cuando le fue dicho: Te doy a ti lo que se
les dio a los apóstoles todos. Para convencernos de haber sido
la Iglesia
quien recibió las llaves del reino de los cielos, oíd lo que dijo
en otra ocasión el Señor a todos los apóstoles: Recibid el
Espíritu Santo; y de seguida: A quien le perdonareis los pecados, le serán perdonados, y a quien se los retuviereis, seránles
retenidos. A las llaves aluden las palabras: Lo que desatareis en
la tierra, será desatado en el cielo, y lo que atareis en la tierra,

toda? Oye lo que se le dice a él, y en él a todos los buenos fieles: Si
te ofendiere tu hermano, anda y demuéstraselo a solas con él; mas si
no te escuchare, toma contigo a otro o a otros dos, puesto que en
boca de dos o tres testigos es firme toda palabra; pero si te desoyere,
díselo a la Iglesia, y si a la Iglesia desoyere, tenle por gentil y publicano. Dígoos en verdad que cuanto atareis en la tierra, atado
quedara en el cielo, y cuanto desatareis en la tierra, desatado
quedará en el cielo. Si, pues, la paloma liga y desliga, el edificio
fundado en la piedra liga y desliga también. Teman los ligados, teman los sueltos. Los sueltos teman no ser atados; los atados imploren se les desate. Cada uno está ligado por los lazos de sus pecados, y fuera de la Iglesia nadie es desatado. A un muerto cuatriduano le dice: Lázaro, sal fuera, y salió del sepulcro, ligados pies
y manos por las fajas. A ese modo, moviendo el alma a exteriorizar
la confesión del pecado, excita el Señor al muerto a salir de su
tumba; pero aún no está de todo punto desligado. El Señor, que
había dicho a sus discípulos: Lo que desatareis en la tierra, queda
desatado en el cielo, cuando Lázaro surge del sepulcro, dice: Desatadle y dejadle ir. Le resucitó por sí mismo y le desató por medio de
sus discípulos.
3. FIRMEZA Y DEBILIDAD DE LA IGLESIA, FIGURADAS
EN PEDRO.—Ved por qué Pedro singularmente simboliza la reciedumbre de la Iglesia cuando sigue al Señor, que va a padecer, y
su flaqueza (flaqueza de cierto género), cuando, interrogado por una
sierva, negó al Salvador. ¡Súbitamente renegado quien tanto había
amado! Presumió de sí mismo, y vio, por vista de ojos, lo que de
suyo era. Había dicho, corno sabéis: Señor, yo seré contigo hasta la
muerte; y si fuera menester morir, por ti doy la vida. A este alarde
presuntuoso replicó el Señor; ¿Darás la vida por mí? En verdad te
digo que antes de cantar el gallo me negarás tres veces. Y aconteció
lo vaticinado por el Médico; los alardes del enfermo no se realizaron. Y ¿después? Después el Señor le miró, y Pedro salió fuera
y lloró amargamente. Salió fuera; era confesar su culpa. Lloró
amargamente porque sabía amar, y bien pronto las dulzuras del
amor reemplazaron en él a las amarguras del dolor.
4. LA UNIDAD DE LA IGLESIA, SIMBOLIZADA EN LAS
OVEJAS.
Por idéntico motivo confió también el Señor a Pedro, después de la
resurrección, el cuidado de apacentarle las ovejas. No fue, a la verdad, el único discípulo merecedor de apacentarlas; mas,
dirigiéndose a él solo, el Salvador encarece la unidad; y se dirige a
él por ser Pedro el primero de los apóstoles. Simón, hijo de Juan,
¿me amas? Pedro respondió: Te amo. Y habiéndoselo preguntado
segunda vez, respondió que le amaba. Preguntado tercera vez, cual
si no le creyera el Señor, Pedro se atrista. ¿Cómo no había de
creerle, si estaba leyendo en su corazón? Tras aquel movimiento de
pesadumbre, Pedro responde: Señor, tú sabes todas las cosas, y sabes que te amo. Pues todo lo sabes, no has de ignorar sólo esto. ¡Oh
apóstol, no te
aflijas! Díselo una vez, díselo dos, díselo tres, y sé tres veces victorioso confesando tu amor, ya que tres veces fue vencida tu presunción por el temor. Necesario es desatar tres veces esto que tres veces ataste. A pesar de lo cual, el Señor recomendó una, dos y tres
veces sus ovejas a Pedro.
6. MARAVILLOSA MUDANZA DE SAN PABLO.—Venga

de abrumar con cadenas y de llevar al suplicio a los cristianos doquiera los halle. Reciba, reciba esta licencia y vaya y corra, ansioso
de matar, sediento de sangre. El que mora en el cielo se burlará de
él. Iba, pues, al decir de la Escritura, ansioso de matar, y
avecinábase a uí y ahí; aquí la Cabeza, el cuerpo ahí. No nos maravillemos, hermanos míos, porque nosotros pertenecemos al Cuerpo
de Cristo. Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues? Dura cosa es para
ti dar coces contra el aguijón. A ti únicamente hieres; porque la
Iglesia mía más crece cuanto es más perseguida. Despavorido y
temblando: Señor, dice, ¿quién eres tú? Yo soy Jesús Nazareno, a
quien tú persigues. Súbitamente mudado, espera una orden, depone
su odio y se dispone a obedecer. Dícesele qué debe hacer, y antes
de ser Pablo bautizado, el Señor dijo a Ananías: Busca tal barrio, y
en el barrio, al hombre que se llama Saulo, y bautízale; porque es
para mí un vaso de elección. Este vaso ha de llevar dentro alguna
cosa, no debe estar vacío. Necesario es llenarle. ¿De qué sino de
gracia? Ananías respondió a nuestro Señor Jesucristo: Señor, he
oído decir que este hombre ha causado mucho mal a tus santos.
Ahora trae cartas de los príncipes de los
sacerdotes para llevarse presos a quienes van por vuestro camino,
doquiera los halle. Yo le mostraré, replica el Señor, lo que debe
sufrir por mi nombre. Estremecíase Ananías al oír el nombre de
Saulo; era la débil oveja que temblaba hasta bajo la mano del Pastor de sólo oír hablar del lobo.
7. MARTIRIO DE AMBOS APÓSTOLES.—El Señor le mostró
a Pablo cuánto le convenía soportar por él. Ejercitóle después en
trabajos de cadenas y azotes, cárceles y naufragios, y por los
dolores del martirio condújole también a la glorificación del presente día. Ambos apóstoles fueron martirizados el mismo
día. Ambos a dos no eran sino una sola cosa, y aunque hubieran
padecido en fechas distintas, no hubieran dejado de serlo. Pedro
fue delante, siguióle Pablo; Pablo ahora, Saulo antes; soberbio antes, ahora humilde. El nombre de Saulo recordaba, en efecto, el de
Saúl, perseguidor del santo David. Fue derribado perseguidor, se
alzó predicador. Mudó su nombre altivo por otro humilde. Porque
Pablo (Paulus) significa pequeño. A cada paso decimos: "Dentro de
poco—post paululun —te veré: dentro de poco—paulo post—he de
hacer esto, aquello. Preguntad a Pablo qué debemos pensar de él, y
os responderá: Yo
soy el
más
pequeño de los
apóstoles.
8. FINALIDAD DE CELEBRAR LAS FIESTAS DE LOS
MÁRTIRES.Celebramos hoy una fiesta que la sangre de los
apóstoles hizo sagrada para nosotros; amemos su fe, su vida, sus
trabajos, su confesión, sus predicaciones. Nuestro aprovechamiento
en la virtud está en amar estas cosas, nunca en rodearlas de un regocijo puramente material. ¿Qué nos piden los mártires? Fuera en
algún modo empequeñecerse andar solicitando alabanzas humanas;
de buscarlas, no habrían vencido aún al mundo. Si, pues, le vencieron ya, nada buscan en nosotros para ellos, sino para nosotros.
Enderecemos, por ende, nuestros pasos al Señor. Nuestro camino
era estrecho, erizado de espinas y asperezas; mas, de haberle recorrido ellos en tan gran número, le han allanado y suavizado. Le pasó
el Señor primero, pasáronle los intrépidos apóstoles y después los
mártires: niños, mujeres, doncellas; pero a su lado iba siempre
aquel que dijo: Sin mí nada podéis hacer.
