As I mentioned two weekends ago, I will be
leaving St. Paul and Missions for Columbus, Ga.
and Our Lady of Lourdes parish.
Fr. Paul O’Connell, formerly of St. Joseph
Church in Waycross and for the past year, Our
Lady, Star of the Sea in St. Mary, will be your
new pastor.
Fr. O’Connell will be here June 24. A native of
Northern Ireland, Fr. O’Connell was ordained a
priest for our diocese in 2003. In his forties, he
spent some time as a Christian Brother
missionary teaching in Africa. I know you will
enjoy his wit, his knowledge about Christ and the
Church, and his great faith.
We offer our prayers for the repose of the soul
of Louise Nahra, whose funeral Mass was
Wednesday at St. Paul, and we pray for
consolation for her family and friends.
May the angels lead you into Paradise;
may the martyrs come to welcome you.
POPE TO VISIT THE HOLY LAND
Pope Francis will make his first official visit to
the Holy Land, May 26-28. (Remember, before
1964 and Pope Paul VI’s visit, the last Pope to be
in the Holy Land was the apostle Peter.)
The theme of his visit is “that all may be one”
and it is designed to be an ecumenical meeting
between Francis and the Greek Orthodox
Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew of
Constantinople. It marks the 50th anniversary of
Paul VI’s meeting with Bartholomew’s
predecessor. Let us pray during these days for the
Holy Father and his mission in the Holy Land!
O God, we humbly ask You to watch over those
in the armed services. Help Your servants who
implore Your mercy. Protect them from the
horrors of war. Mother of God, be with them,
and, if they should be called to make the supreme
sacrifice, intercede for them that they may die in
the grace of your Divine Son. Amen.
QUESTIONS CATHOLICS ARE ASKED
Why do you pray for the dead?
The Bible clearly teaches the rightness of prayers
for the dead in 2 Maccabees (12:40, 42, 44-45):
“Then under the Tunic of every one of the dead
they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia,
which the law forbids Jews to wear. And it
became clear to all that this was why these men
had fallen…And they turned to prayer,
beseeching that the sin which had been
committed might be wholly blotted out….For if
he were not expecting that those who had fallen
would rise again, it would have been superfluous
and foolish to pray for the dead….He made
atonement for the dead, that they might be
delivered from their sin.”
St. Paul teaches this in a similar way:
“Otherwise, what do people mean by being
baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are
not raised at all, why are people baptized on their
behalf?” (1 Cor 15:29). This indicates prayer and
fasting for the dead. The word baptism often
symbolically refers to penances (Mk 10:38; Lk
3:16, 12:50). The apostle Paul also appears to be
praying for a dead person, Onesiphorus, in
2 Timothy (1:16-18).

FEAST OF THE ASCENSION
The Feast of the Ascension used to be known as
Ascension Thursday. It is now celebrated the
following Sunday. This year that is June 1.

¿Por qué orar por los muertos?
El Biblia enseña claramente lo correcto de
oraciones por los muertos en 2 Macabeos (12:40,
42, 44-45): "Entonces, bajo la túnica de cada uno
de los muertos que encontraron fichas sagrados
de los ídolos de Jamnia, que la ley prohíbe Judios
de llevar. Y se hizo evidente para todos que esto
era por qué estos hombres habían caído... Y
volvió a la oración, rogando que el pecado que
había cometido podría ser totalmente borrado ....
Porque si él no esperara que los que habían caído
iban a resucitar, habría sido superfluo y necio
rogar por los muertos.... Él hizo expiación por los
muertos, para que quedaran liberados del
pecado."
St. Paul enseña esto de una manera similar: "De
lo contrario, lo que quiere decir la gente al ser
bautizado en nombre de los muertos? Si los
muertos no resucitan, ¿por qué se bautizan por
ellos?" (1 Corintios 15:29). Esto indica la oración
y el ayuno por los muertos. La palabra bautismo
simbólicamente a menudo se refiere a penitencias
(Mc 10:38; Lc 3:16, 12:50). El apóstol Pablo
también parece estar orando por una persona
muerta, Onesíforo, en 2 Timoteo (1:16-18).
PAPA PARA VISITAR LA TIERRA SANTA

Fiesta de la Ascensión
La fiesta de la Ascensión solía ser conocido
como Jueves de la Ascensión. Ahora se celebra el
domingo siguiente. Este año es 1 de junio.

Como mencioné hace dos fines de semana, me
iré St. Paul y Misiones de Columbus, Georgia, y
Nuestra Señora de Lourdes de la Parroquia.
Padre Paul O'Connell, ex miembro de la Iglesia
de San José en Waycross y durante el último año,
la Virgen, Estrella del Mar en Santa María, será
su nuevo pastor.
Padre O'Connell estará aquí 24 de junio.
Originario de Irlanda del Norte, el Padre
O'Connell fue ordenado sacerdote para la
diócesis en 2003. En sus cuarenta años, pasó
algún tiempo como un hermano cristiano enviado
en misión para enseñar en África. Sé que va a
disfrutar de su ingenio, su conocimiento acerca
de Cristo y la Iglesia, y su gran fe.
