MASS ETIQUETTE
Think of the church, always and at all times, as sacred space
and a sacred place. The church is, first and foremost, a place
of worship. It is not an auditorium, convention center, or
meeting hall. We are not filling in time before the
entertainment starts. The church is the primary place we
come to spend time with and be intimate with God. Listen to
the choir and let it move you into prayer.

BEYOND THE UPPER ROOM

At some time in your life, you could probably
relate to the feelings that the Apostles were
experiencing in the upper room on the day of the
first Pentecost: feelings of being alone and afraid,
feelings of doubt and worry.
And then came the Holy Spirit. As we hear in
the first reading at Mass on Pentecost Sunday,
“Suddenly, there came from the sky a noise like a
strong wind, and it filled the entire house in
which they were. Then there appeared to them
tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest
on each one of them. And they were all filled
with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to
proclaim” (Acts of the Apostles 2:1-4).
WISE WORDS: “The Upper Room reminds us of
the birth of the new family, the Church, our holy
Mother the hierarchical Church established by
the risen Jesus; a family that has a Mother, the
Virgin Mary. Christian families belong to this
great family, and in it they find the light and
strength to press on and be renewed, amid the
challenges and difficulties of life.
Before, the Apostles were timid, frightened,
unsure of themselves. All that changed with
Pentecost. All that changed when they were
filled with the Holy Spirit. This is the power of
the Holy Spirit at work. Poured out into the heart
of each believer in Baptism and Confirmation,
the Spirit comes to make us a new creation.
Empowered by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we,
like the Apostles, can put aside our timidity and
boldly proclaim and manifest God’s kingdom in
our world today, just as the Apostles did on the
first Pentecost.
All God’s children, of every people and
language, are invited and called to be part of this
great family, as brothers and sisters and sons and
daughters of the one Father in heaven.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church #688
offers insight into ways that the Holy Spirit
provides us with an experience of God’s
presence, through the Catholic Church:
by praying and by reading Scripture, by studying
the lives of the saints, by following Church
teaching, by participating in Mass and the
sacraments, by praying, by supporting the
missionary and apostolic works of the Church,
and by recognizing the charisms and ministries of
the Church.
Why do you call your priest “Father”?
“And call no man your father on earth, for you
have one Father, who is in heaven” (Mt 23:9). In
this passage, Jesus is teaching that God the
Father alone is ultimately the source of all
authority. But He is not speaking absolutely,
because if so, that would eliminate even
biological fathers, the title “Church Fathers,” the
founding father of a country or organization, etc.
It has been said that today we face the
opportunity for a new Pentecost in our Church
and our world. That is why we in the Church, as
the body of Christ in today’s world, are all called
to carry out the new evangelization, to deepen
and share our faith, and to take up the challenge
and the mission of building up Christ’s kingdom
and manifesting His saving love, here & now.
QUESTIONS CATHOLICS ARE ASKED
Jesus himself uses the term “father” in Matthew
(15:4-5; 19:5, 19, 29; 21:31), John (8:56), and
several other places. In the parable of the Rich
Man and Lazarus, Jesus actually presents the
Rich man as using the address “Father Abraham”
twice (Lk 16:24, 30; Acts 7:2; Rom 4:12; Jas
2:21). St. Paul also uses the term when he writes,
“I became your father in Christ Jesus through the
gospel” (1Cor 4:15; 4:14-16), and refers to “our
forefather Isaac” (Rom 9:10).

SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO
Sala del Cenáculo, Jerusalén

Es un gran don del Señor estar aquí reunidos, en el
Cenáculo, para celebrar la Eucaristía. Al saludarles
a ustedes con fraterna alegría, quisiera mencionar
con afecto a los Patriarcas Orientales Católicos que
han participado, durante estos días, en mi
peregrinación. Les agradezco su significativa
presencia, que tanto valor tiene para mí, y les
aseguro que tienen un puesto especial en mi
corazón y en mi oración.
Aquí, donde Jesús consumó la Última Cena con los
Apóstoles; donde, resucitado, se apareció en medio
de ellos; donde el Espíritu Santo descendió
abundantemente sobre María y los discípulos. Aquí
nació la Iglesia, y nació en salida. Desde aquí salió,
con el Pan partido entre las manos, las llagas de
Jesús en los ojos, y el Espíritu de amor en el
corazón.
En el Cenáculo, Jesús resucitado, enviado por el
Padre, comunicó su mismo Espíritu a los Apóstoles
y con su fuerza los envió a renovar la faz de la
tierra (cf. Sal 104,30).
Salir, marchar, no quiere decir olvidar. La Iglesia
en salida guarda la memoria de lo que sucedió aquí;
el Espíritu Paráclito le recuerda cada palabra, cada
gesto, y le revela su sentido.
El Cenáculo nos recuerda el servicio, el lavatorio
de los pies, que Jesús realizó, como ejemplo para
sus discípulos. Lavarse los pies los unos a los otros
significa acogerse, aceptarse, amarse, servirse
mutuamente. Quiere decir servir al pobre, al
enfermo, al excluido, a aquel que me resulta
antipático, al que me molesta.
El Cenáculo nos recuerda, con la Eucaristía, el
sacrificio. En cada celebración eucarística, Jesús se
ofrece por nosotros al Padre, para que también
nosotros podamos unirnos a Él, ofreciendo a Dios
nuestra vida, nuestro trabajo, nuestras alegrías y
nuestras penas…, ofrecer todo en sacrificio
espiritual.
Y el Cenáculo nos recuerda también la amistad.
“Ya no les llamo siervos –dijo Jesús a los Doce–…
a ustedes les llamo amigos” (Jn 15,15). El Señor
nos hace sus amigos, nos confía la voluntad del
Padre y se nos da Él mismo. Ésta es la experiencia
más hermosa del cristiano, y especialmente del
sacerdote: hacerse amigo del Señor Jesús, y
descubrir en su corazón que Él es su amigo.
El Cenáculo nos recuerda la despedida del Maestro
y la promesa de volver a encontrarse con sus
amigos. “Cuando vaya…, volveré y les llevaré
conmigo, para que donde estoy yo, estén también
ustedes” (Jn 14,3). Jesús no nos deja, no nos
abandona nunca, nos precede en la casa del Padre y
allá nos quiere llevar con Él.
Pero el Cenáculo recuerda también la mezquindad,
la curiosidad –“¿quién es el traidor?”–, la traición.
Y cualquiera de nosotros, y no sólo siempre los
demás, puede encarnar estas actitudes, cuando
miramos con suficiencia al hermano, lo juzgamos;
cuando traicionamos a Jesús con nuestros pecados.
El Cenáculo nos recuerda la comunión, la
fraternidad, la armonía, la paz entre nosotros.
¡Cuánto amor, cuánto bien ha brotado del
Cenáculo! ¡Cuánta caridad ha salido de aquí, como
un río de su fuente, que al principio es un arroyo y
después crece y se hace grande… Todos los santos
han bebido de aquí; el gran río de la santidad de la
Iglesia siempre encuentra su origen aquí, siempre
de nuevo, del Corazón de Cristo, de la Eucaristía,
de su Espíritu Santo.
El Cenáculo, finalmente, nos recuerda el
nacimiento de la nueva familia, la Iglesia, nuestra
santa madre Iglesia jerárquica, constituida por
Cristo resucitado. Una familia que tiene una Madre,
la Virgen María. Las familias cristianas pertenecen
a esta gran familia, y en ella encuentran luz y
fuerza para caminar y renovarse, mediante las
fatigas y las pruebas de la vida. A esta gran familia
están invitados y llamados todos los hijos de Dios
de cualquier pueblo y lengua, todos hermanos e
hijos de un único Padre que está en los cielos.
Éste es el horizonte del Cenáculo: el horizonte del
Cenáculo, el horizonte del Resucitado y de la
Iglesia.
De aquí parte la Iglesia en salida, animada por el
soplo del Espíritu. Recogida en oración con la
Madre de Jesús, revive siempre la esperanza de una
renovada efusión del Espíritu Santo: Envía, Señor,
tu Espíritu, y renueva la faz de la tierra (cf. Sal
104,30).
