Dear Parents & Guardians,
Queridos Padres de familia y acudientes,
Welcome to another year of Faith Formation (Religious
Education) here at Sacred Heart / St. Benedict Parish! As we
begin this year, I want to focus in on our mission. What are we
about here in the Sacred Heart / St. Benedict Faith Formation
Program? As Blessed Pope John Paul II stated, the purpose of
catechesis (religious education) is to help people to develop a
personal relationship with Christ. Specifically, our Faith
Formation processes focus not only on the catechesis of
children, but in fact, our mission expands to each and every
baptized member of our Parish.
¡Bienvenidos a un nuevo año de formación en la fe (Educación
Religiosa) aquí en la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón / San Benito! Al
comenzar este año, quiero centrarme en nuestra misión. ¿Qué es lo
que significa el Programa de Formación de la Fe aquí en la iglesia? El
Beato Papa Juan Pablo II dijo que el propósito de la catequesis es
ayudar a las personas a desarrollar una relación personal con Cristo. Es
decir, el proceso de Formación en la Fe se centra no sólo en la
catequesis de los niños sino que también, y sobre todo, el proceso se
extiende a todas y a todos los miembros bautizados de nuestra
parroquia.
The work of carrying out this mission requires the
collaboration of many individuals: The priests, the DRE, the
teachers, but most especially, YOU! In fact, YOU, as Parents /
Guardians are the most important collaborators in this great
work of the Church! As a parent / guardian, you play a vital and
irreplaceable role in introducing your sons and daughters to
the Person of Jesus. Your witness of Christian living in the
home is a constant witness to the faith. Your commitment to
building a loving family environment helps opens your children
up to the experience of God’s love. By setting aside special
times for prayer, by centering your family life on the
celebration of the Holy Mass each Sunday, and by being a
living example of love for one another, you help your child to
grow in his or her relationship with Jesus and with God’s
family, the Church.
El trabajo de llevar a cabo esta misión requiere la colaboración de
muchas personas: de los sacerdotes, del director del programa, de los
catequistas, pero más especialmente de USTEDES. ¡De hecho, ustedes,
como padres de familia o acudientes son los colaboradores más
importantes de esta gran obra de la Iglesia! Como padres de familia o
acudientes, ustedes juegan un papel fundamental e insustituible en la
relación de sus hijos e hijas con Jesús. Su testimonio de vida cristiana
en el hogar es un testimonio constante de su fe. Su compromiso con la
construcción de un ambiente familiar amoroso ayuda a sus hijos a
abrirse más a una experiencia verdadera de amor a Dios. Al sacar
tiempo para los momentos especiales de oración en la casa, al centrar
su vida familiar en torno a la celebración de la Santa Misa los domingos
y al ser un ejemplo vivo de amor de los unos por los otros, así se le
ayudará a sus niños a crecer en su relación con Jesús y con la familia de
Dios que es la Iglesia.
The power that you have to influence your child’s faith
development cannot be underestimated. While our catechists
spend time each week preparing lessons and instructing your
children in the faith, the amount of time which they spend
with your children is so small in comparison to the time which
you spend with your children on a day to day basis. Each day,
you have the opportunity to share the faith with them, in small
ways and in big ways – through the love you show for your
children and for others, by teaching your children how to live
virtuously – how to be kind to others, how to share – and by
offering forgiveness when wronged by another. As a catechist
and as the Coordinator of Faith Formation here at Sacred
Heart / St. Benedict Parish, I see you as the most important
member of our catechetical team. Without your support, our
work is destined to fail.
El poder que ustedes tienen como padres de familia o acudientes para
influir en el desarrollo de la fe de sus hijos, no se puede subestimar. El
tiempo que los catequistas sacan cada semana para preparar las
lecciones e instruir a sus hijos en la fe es muy poco comparado a la
cantidad de tiempo que ustedes pasan con sus hijos en el día a día.
Cada día, ustedes tienen la oportunidad de compartir la fe con sus
hijos -en pequeñas y grandes cosas - a través del amor que muestran
por sus hijos y por los demás, enseñándoles cómo vivir virtuosamente,
cómo ser amables con los demás y aprendiendo a compartir,
perdonando y dando perdón cuando se es ofendido por otros. Como
catequista y como Coordinador del proceso de Formación en la Fe aquí
en la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón / San Benito, los veo a ustedes
padres de familia y acudientes como los miembros más importantes
de nuestro equipo catequético. Sin su apoyo, nuestro trabajo está
destinado al fracaso.
At this time, I am pleased to present to you with this revised
“Parent Handbook” for the 2014-2015 Year. In it, you will find
all the information you will need to know as your child begins
Faith Formation (Religious Education) classes here at Sacred
Heart / St. Benedict parish. I hope that it will serve as a
resource to help you as a parent to understand and live out
your essential role in the religious formation of your children.
This handbook is just one of the many ways we at Sacred
Heart / St. Benedict Parish would like to reach out to you and
help you in your role as Catholic Parents. We hope to offer
other resources and events throughout the year to help you
even more in this endeavor!
En este momento, me da gusto entregarles a ustedes este “Manual
para los Padres de Familia” revisado para el año 2014-2015. En este
manual podrán encontrar toda la información que necesitan cuando
sus hijos inician las clases de Formación en la Fe (Educación Religiosa)
aquí en la Iglesia Sagrado Corazón / San Benito. Espero que este
manual sirva como un recurso para ayudarles como padres de familia a
entender y a vivir su papel esencial en la formación religiosa de sus
hijos. Este manual es sólo una de las muchas formas en que en la
Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón / San Benito le gustaría llegar a ustedes
y ayudarles en su papel de padres de familia católicos. ¡Esperamos
poder ofrecer otros recursos y eventos durante todo el año para
ayudarles aún más en este esfuerzo!

MISSION STATEMENT / OBJETIVOS DEL PROGRAMA DE EDUCACIÓN RELIGIOSA
“Full authority has been given to me both in heaven
and on earth; go, therefore, and make disciples of all
the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to
carry out everything I have commanded you.” Matt. 28:

Catechesis, or Religious Education, is the process of
communicating the beliefs, values and practices which
make people Catholic Christians. It is the work of
handing on, from one generation to the next, the faith
that has come down to us from the apostles, and the
way of life to which that faith calls us. The goal of
Catechesis is:
 To teach students what a Catholic believes and
how a Catholic ought to live.
 To involve students in the life of the parish, i.e. in
worship, service and community.
 To assist parents in imparting the Catholic Faith to
their children as a living and life-giving faith.
 To encourage parents to continue their own
religious development.
La catequesis, o Educación Religiosa, es el proceso de
comunicar las creencias, valores y prácticas que hacen
a la gente cristianos católicos. Es el trabajo de
transmitir de una generación a otra la fe que ha llegado
hasta nosotros desde los Apóstoles, y la forma de vida
a la que esa fe nos llama. El objetivo de la catequesis es
la siguiente:
 Enseñar a los estudiantes lo que cree todo
católico y cómo debe vivir.
 Involucrar a los estudiantes en la vida de la
parroquia, es decir, en la celebración, en el
servicio y en la comunidad.
 Ayudar a los padres de familia a transmitir la fe
católica a sus hijos como experiencia de fe viva y
vivificante.
 Animar a los padres de familia a continuar su
crecimiento religioso.
We at Sacred Heart / St. Benedict Parish strive to
emphasize formation in a basic understanding of our
Catholic faith through doctrinal lessons based on the
Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) and assuring the
spiritual development (age-appropriate) of our
students by participating in the sacramental life of the
church along with prayer, holiness, service and charity
within our local community.
Aquí en la iglesia del Sagrado Corazón / San Benito
estamos esforzándonos en destacar la importancia de
la formación en una comprensión básica de la fe
católica a través de las enseñanzas doctrinales del
Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (CIC), y queremos
asegurarnos del desarrollo espiritual (apropiado para la
edad) de nuestros estudiantes al participar en la vida
sacramental de la iglesia junto con la oración, la
santidad, el servicio y la caridad en nuestra comunidad

ROLE OF PARENTS / ROL DE LOS PADRES
PRIEST:
“You have asked to have your child
baptized. In doing so you are accepting
the responsibility of training him/her in
the practice of the faith. It will be your
duty to bring him/her up to keep God’s
commandments as Christ taught us, by
loving God and our neighbor. Do you
clearly understand what you are
undertaking?”
The Catechetical Program is designed to assist parents in
their sacred responsibility to educate their child in the
Faith. It can never replace the parents in the carrying out
of their responsibility.
Ustedes han pedido el bautismo para sus
hijos. Al hacer esto, deben darse cuenta

educarlos en la fe, de tal forma que ellos

El Programa de Catequesis está diseñado para ayudar a los
padres de familia en su responsabilidad sagrada de educar
a sus hijos en la fe. Nunca se puede sustituir a los padres
de familia en el cumplimiento de esta responsabilidad.
The Religious Education of a child provides a special
opportunity for parents to reeducate and update
themselves in the practice of their own faith. We
strongly encourage parents to participate in our faith
formation program as catechists, assistants, clerical, or
office volunteers; and we will provide all training
required.
La educación religiosa de un niño es una oportunidad
especial para que los papás mismos se reeduquen y se
actualicen en la práctica de su propia fe. Animamos a los
padres de familia a participar en nuestro programa de
formación en la fe como catequistas, ayudantes de oficina
o como voluntarios y les facilitaremos toda la formación
necesaria.
As part of your ongoing faith commitment to your child
and to yourself, all parents are required to attend parent
enrichment sessions. A schedule for these meetings will
be provided after children’s classes begin. At least one
parent / guardian must attend these meetings. It is our
hope that these sessions will re-acquaint parents with
authentic Church teachings and cultivate a deeper
appreciation of the sacraments, as well as to present
them with a more complete understanding of the
sacramental preparation program and instructions on
how they can support their children in their instructions.
Como parte de su compromiso continuo de fe con sí
mismos y con sus niños, todos los padres de familia deben

ATTENDANCE AT MASS / ASISTENCIA A MISA
Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the
child’s earliest years. Parents have the mission of teaching
their children to pray and to discover their vocation as
children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community
and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is
a privileged place for the catechesis of children and
parents. (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2226)
We encourage all parents to participate with your
children by attending Sunday Mass, especially here with
the community of Sacred Heart / St. Benedict). “You shall
attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.” (The
Precepts of the Church – CCC 2042)
La educación en la fe debe comenzar por parte de los
papás en los primeros años de vida del niño. Los papás
tienen la misión de enseñar a sus hijos a orar y a descubrir
su vocación de hijos de Dios. La parroquia es la
comunidad eucarística y el corazón de la vida litúrgica de
las familias cristianas y es un lugar privilegiado para la
catequesis de los niños y de los padres. (Catecismo de la

Les invitamos a todos los padres de familia a participar

DROP OFF & PICK-UP / DEJAR Y RECOGER
Our number one priority is the safety of everyone
especially our children. We at Sacred Heart / St. Benedict
Parish are asking everyone to review the following tips
and regulations to make the drop off and pick up of your
children as safe and easy as possible.
 ALL CLASSES BEGIN in Sacred Heart Church.
 ALL CLASSES ARE RELEASED FROM THE
CLASSROOMS AT THE TIME INDICATED. CHILDREN
ARE TO BE PICKED UP ONLY AT THE DESIGNATED
PICK-UP AREA IN FRONT OF THE GYM. PLEASE DO
NOT ASK YOUR CHILDREN TO LEAVE THE
PREMISES THROUGH ANY OTHER EXITS!! This is for
the safety of all the children.
La prioridad número uno es la seguridad de todos,
especialmente la seguridad de los niños Les pedimos a
todos que revisen los siguientes consejos y normas
para hacer que el dejar y recoger a sus hijos sea tan
seguro y fácil como sea posible.


 If you wish to come early to await the release of
your child, please park in the designated parking
spots only. Fire regulations require that cars coming
through the parking lot be allowed to stop only
momentarily for loading only. Parking in the “drivethrough only” areas of the parking lot is simply NOT
ALLOWED.

Si desea llegar temprano y esperar a recoger a su
hijo, por favor, estacione su carro en los lugares de
estacionamiento designados. Las normas contra
incendios y emergencias requieren que a los carros
que vienen por el estacionamiento se les permita
detenerse solamente por un momento para
recoger a la persona. Estacionar el carro

 Because the children are not released before the
times specified above, know that your child may not
be at the designated pick up area in front of the
Gym until 2-3 minutes AFTER the bell rings. If you
intend to drive through and stop momentarily to
pick up your child, you might want to consider not
entering the parking lot until after the time the bell
rings. This will hopefully ensure that your child is
waiting for you in the pick-up area, ready to get into
your car when you come through.
DROP OFF & PICK-UP CONTINUED / DEJAR Y RECOGER CONTINUACIÓN
 We make every effort to make sure your child is at
the pick-up area in front of the gym within 2-3
minutes after the bell rings. If, for some reason,
your child is not present at the pick-up area when
you drive through, please park your vehicle (in a
designated parking spot) to wait for your child or
move through the parking lot to the street and
reenter again. We must keep the traffic moving
through the parking lot to obey all Fire and Police
regulations.
 We ask the children to stay in the pick-up area in
front of the gym and pay attention to the cars
coming through to facilitate the quick pick up of all
children. Often times we must remind the children
to not run around and leave the area while waiting.
It would be a big help if parents would remind their
children to remain in the area and wait patiently for
you so they are ready to get in the car when you
come through.
 Please be courteous and listen to those who are
trying to facilitate the safe and quick pick up of your
children. If you are asked to move your car, please
remember that we are primarily concerned with the
safety of everyone (especially your children) as well
as obeying the Fire and Police regulations.

Haremos todo lo posible para asegurarnos de que
su hijo está en la zona de espera para ser recogido
frente del gimnasio de la escuela dentro de 2-3


Por favor, sea cortés y preste atención a aquellos
que están tratando de ingresar con seguridad y
rápidamente a recoger a sus hijos. Si se le pide que
mueva su carro, recuerde que estamos
principalmente preocupados por la seguridad de
todas las personas, especialmente de los niños, así
como el cumplimiento de la normativa contra
incendios y emergencias de la policía.
ATTENDANCE & ABSENCES / ASISTENCIA Y AUSENCIAS
Religious education classes must be given first priority.
Athletic, dance and/or social activities are not an excuse
for continuous absence or early dismissal. It is
imperative that a child be present for all classes unless
illness or other serious reason prevents this. If a child
continually misses class in the first year, he/she will not
be eligible for the next year. And if the child is in second
year and misses classes frequently, will not be eligible for
First Communion. Excessive absence may delay the
reception of sacraments. When a child is absent due to
illness a written note must be given to the child’s
catechist explaining the reason for the absence. Three
(3) absences will be considered the limit for eligibility to
the next grade level. If your child has three absences, it
will be necessary to meet with the DRE before being
accepted back into the class. There may be additional
make-up work required by the student and parent(s)
before being considered for reacceptance.
A las clases de educación religiosa se les debe dar prioridad.
Actividades deportivas, danza u otras actividades sociales
no pueden ser una excusa para no asistir a la catequesis o
para salir temprano de la clase. Es imprescindible que los
niños estén presentes en todas las clases a menos que la
enfermedad o causa grave lo impida. Si un alumno de
primer año falta a la clase con mucha frecuencia, no será
elegible para seguir al segundo año, y si está en segundo
año y también falta a las clases no podrá hacer la Primera
Comunión. La ausencia excesiva puede retrasar la recepción
de los sacramentos. Cuando un niño está ausente por
enfermedad, entonces una nota por escrito debe ser
entregada al catequista del niño explicando la razón de la
ausencia. Tres (3) ausencias serán consideradas como el
límite de elegibilidad para pasar al siguiente año de
catequesis. Si su hijo acumula tres ausencias, será necesario
reunirse con el Director del programa de catequesis (DRE)
antes de ser aceptado de nuevo en la clase. Es posible que
haya más trabajo de recuperación requerido por el
estudiante y por sus papás antes de aceptarlo de nuevo.
ATTENDANCE & ABSENCES CONTINUED / ASISTENCIA Y AUSENCIAS CONTINUACÍON
Please Note: First Communion and Confirmation classes
are two (2) consecutive year programs. Therefore,
students will not be eligible to receive the sacraments if
they miss one year of preparation. Faith Formation
(Religious Education) is a continuous process. Ending
Faith Formation when a child receives First Eucharist
deprives the child of the necessary catechesis to live a
full Catholic life as well as having the basic knowledge of
the faith required to start preparation for the sacrament
of Confirmation. Thus, children should continue to
attend the catechetical program even after receiving
their First Communion.
Nota: Las clases de Primera Comunión y de Confirmación
son programas de dos (2) años consecutivos. Por lo
tanto, los alumnos no serán elegibles para recibir los
sacramentos si pierden un año de preparación. La
Formación en la Fe (Educación Religiosa) es un proceso
continuo. De tal forma que terminar el proceso de
Formación en la Fe cuando el niño recibe la Primera
Comunión, priva al niño de la catequesis necesaria para
vivir una vida católica plena, así como tener los
conocimientos básicos de la fe que se requiere para
iniciar la preparación para el sacramento de la
Confirmación. Por lo tanto, los niños deben continuar
con el proceso catequético aun después de recibir la
Primera Comunión.
EARLY DISMISSAL & PUNCTUALITY / SALIDA TEMPRANA Y PUNTUALIDAD
No child will be released to anyone other than a
parent/guardian unless we have explicit written
permission from the parent/guardian (these can be
noted on the emergency form). If a child is to walk home
after classes, it must be noted on the emergency form.
All classes begin in the church and students are expected
to be on time. A student is considered “tardy” if they
arrive at the church 10 minutes after class begins.
Habitual tardiness will not be tolerated. Three (3)
“tardies” equals one (1) full absence. Three (3) absences
will be considered the limit for eligibility to the next
grade level. Any child who continually arrives late for
classes will be asked to repeat the Religious Education
year. Please do not ask that a child be dismissed from
classes early. If an emergency arises and the child needs
to be released early, the parent/guardian must write a
note and come into the building to personally sign the
child out of the program on that day. The child must be
picked up at the Religious Education office. Students
may not wait outside the school or run across the street
to a waiting car. A parent/guardian must come into the
building to pick up their child. This ensures the safety of
each and every child.

Students are to dress neatly for church and class. No
pajama pants, short shorts or visible underwear are
permitted. Clothing with either obscene or inappropriate
messages or logos for alcoholic beverages, cigarettes or
drugs may not be worn. Hats, hoods or visors should not
be worn in church or class. For the safety of your child
shoes with wheels inserted in the heel are forbidden.

God. Therefore, classroom behavior needs to be
characterized by genuine Christian care, mutual respect,
and honesty.

Disruptive behavior prevents learning for the whole class
and can be frustrating for the Catechist and the students.
Under no circumstances will a student or an adult be
permitted to strike another or use abusive language for
any reason. Lack of self-discipline during class will be
addressed promptly and parents notified. Removal of a
student from the classroom may lead to suspension.
El comportamiento disruptivo impide el aprendizaje de
toda la clase y puede ser frustrante para el catequista y
los estudiantes. En ningún caso, a un estudiante o a un
adulto se le permitirá golpear a otro o usar lenguaje

Should an incident occur prior to, during, or after class
time while the student remains on parish/school
property, the responsible Catechist or adult witness
must:
• Intervene to insure student safety
• Notify the Director as soon as possible
• Complete and return to the Director, within 24 hours,
an ‘Incident Report’
The normal steps for disciplinary action will be:
1. Verbal correction by the Catechist
2. Student will be sent to the office to meet with
the Director
3. Parent will be notified by the Catechist and a
conference will be held
4. Parent and child will meet with the Director
5. Child will be removed from the program
A student will be removed from the classroom
immediately and suspended for any of the following
violations:
 Drugs/Alcohol/Substance abuse
 Verbal or Physical Harassment or fighting
(Bullying)
 Stealing or damaging parish property
 Jeopardizing a person’s safety
A written notice will be given indicating the reason for
suspension. The pastor will be notified when such action
is taken.
En caso de ocurrir un incidente antes, durante o después

Students are FORBIDDEN to use or possess drugs,
cigarettes, alcohol, and weapons, on Sacred Heart / St.
Benedict property. Any student found in possession of
drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, or weapons will be reported to
the police and suspended or expelled from the program
after consultation and review.

We understand the fact that students carry cell phones
for emergency use. Therefore all students are asked to
turn off cell phones during sessions or they will be
confiscated. The use of all other electronic devices is not
conducive to a learning environment and will also be
confiscated and returned to a parent at the end of the
session.

Substance abuse is defined as the possession of, use of,
or trafficking in any unauthorized, illegal drug, chemical,
alcohol, or tobacco-like substance, which can be
introduced into the body through ingestion, inhalation,
injection or percutaneous means. Any student or adult
found in possession of an illegal or unauthorized
substance on parish property will be immediately
removed from the premises and suspended from the
program. Any student or adult trafficking in illegal
substances will be formally removed from the program
and the matter turned over to the local authorities.

uso de, o el tráfico de cualquier fármaco no autorizado,
drogas ilegales, químicos, alcohol, cigarrillos o tabaco o

BUILDING USAGE RULES / NORMAS PARA EL USO DE LAS INSTALACIONES
It is the responsibility of each Catechist to faithfully
enforce the following building usage rules. The Catechist
will review these rules with their students at the
beginning of the year, and secure their cooperation.
 Food is NOT permitted in the classrooms; due to
the limited class time and, due to ongoing issues
with children having food allergies, we cannot
allow snacks.
 Students are not to touch items found in the
classroom desks.
 Students and Catechists are not to use the
classroom electronic “SmartBoards”
 Students and Catechists are not to erase
information on the white boards or chalk boards
left by the school teacher.
 Students are not allowed to run in the halls.
Willfully damaging or destroying property will not be
tolerated. The parent of the student must pay for the
replacement or repair of any damages done. Accidental
damage should be reported to the catechist and
coordinator immediately. Serious or repeated infractions
may result in expulsion from the Faith Formation
(Religious Education) Program.
Es la responsabilidad de cada catequista hacer cumplir
fielmente las siguientes normas del uso de las

If a relatively minor accident occurs to a student while
attending the catechetical program, the following steps
are taken:
• The catechist reports the accident immediately to
the Director/ Coordinator.
• If bleeding is involved, the procedure outlined under
“Blood Borne Pathogens” is followed.
• The Director notifies the parent. If parent cannot be
reached, Director/Coordinator follows instructions
on Student Information Record.
In case of serious accident or illness:
• Catechist reports the accident immediately to the
Director/Coordinator.
• 911 is called immediately.
• The Director/Coordinator notifies the parent. If
parent cannot be reached, Director/Coordinator
follows instructions on Student Information Record.
Si un accidente relativamente de menor importancia se
da en un estudiante mientras asiste al programa
catequético, se tomarán las siguientes medidas:

Due to the limited time we have with the children and
disruption to classroom activities, restroom breaks are
discouraged during class time. If possible, please have
your child use the restroom prior to coming to class.

the restroom in an urgent situation.

 Use of restraint procedures on a child that cause

without the ongoing supervision of a licensed
physician.
 Providing alcoholic beverages or controlled
substances.
 Commission of any act, other that by accidental
means, that threatens or results in any injury or
death to the child.
The Parish Director of Faith Formation (Religious
Education) is required by the State of California and
Diocesan Policy on Child Abuse to report suspected or
actual child abuse or neglect to the proper authorities.
Catechists who observe actual or suspected child abuse
must report the matter in confidence to their Director of
Faith Formation (Religious Education) immediately.
All Volunteers who work with children are required to
complete to a background check including fingerprinting
BEFORE working with the children.

Protecting God’s Children – We know that ministry with
children and youth, in particular, is a sacred trust. All of us
in this parish are committed to preserve, at all times and in
all places, this sacred trust which is rooted in our faith in
Jesus Christ.
The following is a letter to parents from the Chancellor of
the Diocese of Monterey, Sr. Patricia Murtagh, describing
our Safe Environment Curriculum, “Circle of Grace” that is
taught to all children and teens in Faith Formation in our
parish.

“Respecting All God’s People”
Dear Parent,
Out of concern for all God’s people and in response to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Charter
for the Protection of Children and Young People, we have a program for the safe environment education of
children and young people supported and mandated by Bishop Richard Garcia of the Diocese of Monterey.
Diocese/eparchies will establish ‘safe environment’ programs. They will cooperate with parents,
civil authorities, educators, and community organizations to provide education and training for
children, youth, parents, ministers, educators, and others about ways to make and maintain a safe
environment for children. Dioceses/eparchies will make clear to clergy and members of the
community the standards of conduct for clergy and other persons in positions of trust with regard to
sexual abuse.
Article 12 – Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People
This program is called Circle of Grace. It is meant to supplement and be integrated into the excellent programs
and curricula for the formation of children and young people in our schools and religious education programs.
Circle of Grace aims to equip our children and young people by arming them with essential knowledge and skills
grounded in the richness of our faith. This program helps children and young people to understand their own (and
other’s) dignity in mind, body, and spirit.
What is a Circle of Grace?
The Catholic Church teaches that God has created each of us as unique and special. Genesis 1:27 tells us that we
are created “male and female in God’s image” and that God saw this as “very good.” In that goodness, we are
meant to respect ourselves and everyone else as persons created and loved by God. Adults assist children and
young people to recognize God’s love by helping them to understand that each of us lives and moves in a circle of
grace. You can imagine your own circle of grace by putting your arms above your head then circle down in front
of your body including side to side. This circle, front to back, holds who you are in your body and through your
senses. It holds your very essence in mind, heart, soul, and sexuality.
Why is it important to help our children understand the Circle of Grace?
God intends our relationships in life to be experiences of divine love. Respectful, nurturing, loving relationships
increase our understanding of our own value and help us to love others. It is never too early to help children and
young people understand how very special they are and how relationships in life are called to be sacred.
Understanding this can help them to protect the special person they are and to be respectful of others.
Adults, especially parents, as they strive to provide a safe and protective environment, hold the responsibility to
help children and young people understand and respect their own dignity and that of others. A truly safe and
protective environment is one where children and young people recognize when they are safe or unsafe and know
how to bring their concerns, fears, and uncertainties to the trusted adults in their lives.
How is the Circle of Grace Program different from other protection programs?
According to research, one in four girls and one in seven boys will be sexually abused by age eighteen. Many
protection programs focus on “stranger danger”; however, up to ninety percent (90%) of the time the perpetrator
of abuse is known to the child or young person such as a relative or family friend. Circle of Grace goes beyond
just protection by helping children and young people understand the sacredness of who they are and how to seek
help through their relationships with trusted adults.

Este acuerdo debe ser firmado y devuelto a la
Oficina de Formación de Fe. Si la Oficina de
Formación de Fe no recibe la página del
acuerdo firmado de este manual y su hijo (a)
continúe a asistir a clases de educación
religiosa, la oficina de Educación Religiosa
aceptará la inscripción de su hijo en las clases
como su aceptación formal y un acuerdo de
este manual.
