The Sacraments
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process in
which adults and children of catechetical age join the Catholic Church.
Please contact Deacon James M. Tormey, Sr., our R.C.I.A.
Coordinator, for details at 302-697-2049.
Parents wishing to present their children for Infant Baptism must
participate in an orientation session. Please call the parish office at
410-482-8939 for details.
Please contact Alicia Poppiti at 410-482-8939 about the preparation of
young people for Confirmation, or about children’s first reception of
the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
Couples planning Matrimony meet with the Pastor or one of the
Deacons at least one year in advance of the wedding date they are
considering. Please call the parish office to arrange for this meeting.
Pastoral Care of the Sick: The Anointing of the Sick is appropriate for
anyone faced with hospitalization or a serious challenge to health.
When a hospital admission is planned, please arrange to receive the
Anointing here beforehand, if at all possible. Our lay ministers to the
sick bring Holy Communion to those unable to come to Mass for any
length of time. Please call the parish office to arrange for these
services.
Your Pastor, Deacons and parish staff members are always happy to
speak in confidence with anyone who senses a call to ordained
ministry or religious life.

Dear Parishioners,
Large families. It is a hallmark of Catholicism – my
grandfather was one of 16 siblings, and that was par for the
course back-in-the-day when he grew up in Sicily. The
entertainment media has likewise given us many large families
that we have come to know.
A 12 Kid Family: “Cheaper by the Dozen,” a 1950 film starring
Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy (later remade with Steve Martin
and Bonnie Hunt) about the adventures of parents raising 12
young-uns.
An Eight Kid Family: A very Catholic sitcom about a very
Catholic family called “Just the Ten of Us” aired on TV from
1988-1990. It was about a Catholic family (dad, mom and eight
kids) in California; the dad was a teacher at the local Catholic
school that his kids attended. There was also a show called
“Eight is Enough” in 1970s that featured an equally octadic
(now there’s a cool Scrabble word) family.
A Seven Kid Family: In the 1970s we were treated to getting to
know “The Waltons” – a poor depression era family, with a
mom, dad, grandmother, grandfather and seven children.
Based on a true story, the show was narrated by the oldest
child: John-Boy Walton. Most memorable: at the end of each
show, the family would have a lengthy series of good-nights
between John-Boy, Jason, Mary-Ellen, Benjamin, Erin, JimBob, Erin and their parents and grandparents.
A Six Kid Family: “The Brady Bunch” was kind of like
“Cheaper by the Dozen” but with a 50% discount. The Brady’s
had six kids (and briefly added a seventh kid known as Cousin
Oliver – but he proved as popular as a Big Mac at a vegetarian
wedding, and was dropped from show faster than a 350 lbs.

Well, in the Catholic faith we are part of the communion of
saints – our brothers and sisters in Christ – that exists in
Heaven, on Earth and in Purgatory. With this family of
saints, we often honor some of the key heavenly members of
our saintly family with what are commonly called “Saint
Days.” Now, each of the named saints of the Church has a day
– and since there are over 10,000 saints, there are many saints
on each day. However, only some of them are noted liturgically
– that is, only some are honored at Mass, and are on the
universal calendar of the Church.
The month of July is interesting in the Catholic Church in
that, during this month, at Mass, there are more saints per
square inch honored than any other month in the year. As I
count it, this year, there are 21 saint days in July. Now, mind
you, when a saint day falls on a Sunday, it is suppressed in
deference to the observation of the Sunday, thus we lose three
additional saint days (July 3: St. Thomas the Apostle; July 24:
St. Sharbel; and July 31: St. Ignatius of Loyola). If you add
those three in, there are 24 liturgically observed saint days this
month! Now that’s more saints than you could even find in the
New Orleans SuperDome! And that is just this month.
For this column, I want to focus on the lives of the saints we
will be honoring during the week ahead – and it is a busy Saint
week, with five saints, in the coming six days!
Monday, July 11 – St. Benedict: (Born 480, Died 547) St.
Benedict was the twin brother of Saint Scholastica. As a teen,
St. Benedict left Rome and went to the mountains near Subiaco
where he lived as a hermit in cave. But he wasn't fully alone:
Tradition says that he was fed by a raven, and got to know a
fellow hermit, St. Romanus. Benedict ultimately went to found
a monastery (still in existence today) at Monte Cassino. By the
end of his life had established twelve monasteries along with
the Benedictine rule of life for his monks. Interesting fact: He
is the patron saint of spelunkers as well as the patron saint
invoked against witchcraft.
Wednesday, July 13 – St. Henry: Okay, I don't what his home
life was like, but Henry was the son of Gisella of Burgundy
and Henry the Quarrelsome. Doesn't sound to peaceful. He had
wanted to become a priest, but when his father (the
Quarrelsome dude) passed away, Henry found himself as
Emperor of Bavaria. He went on to marry St. Cunegunda (one
of my favorite saint names), and later became Holy Roman
Emperor. He founded many schools, kept peace, protected the
Church, helped to work in making reforms, and was famous for
being generous to the poor. It is said that at one point in his
life, while he was terribly sick, he was cured by the touch of St.
Benedict (yes, the one you just read about).
Thursday, July 14 – St. Kateri Tekakwitha: Also known as the
Lily of the Mohawk. Born in 1656 in Auriesville, New York,
to an Algonquin Indian mother, and a Mohawk father, Kateri
was orphaned as a child. Having suffered with smallpox as a

child, her face was scarred and her eyesight was impaired. She
converted to the Catholic faith and was baptized in 1676 by a
Jesuit missionary. This conversion didn't sit well with many of
her relatives; she was shunned, mocked and abused for her
faith in Christ. She decided to leave her home, and her
relatives, and travelled to the town of Sault-Sainte-Marie, a
community of Catholic American Indians. There she vowed
herself to chastity, and lived a prayerful, simple life. She died
at the age of 24. Many miracles have been attributed to her
intercession. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
She is the patron saint of exiles and orphans.
Friday, July 15 – St. Bonaventure: Born in 1221 in Tuscany.
He joined the Franciscans at age 22, and was known for his
brilliant theological mind. He went on to write many biblical
commentaries, a biography of St. Francis, and several
theological and philosophical text books. He was made a
Bishop, then a Cardinal by Gregory X, and was later made a
Doctor (great writer) of the Church. As a child he suffered
from a life threatening intestinal illness; it is said that prayer
to St. Francis of Assisi saved his life. As a result of that illness,
St. Bonaventure is honored as the Patron Saint of those
suffering with intestinal problems.
Saturday, July 16 – Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This Marian
feast day was established by the Carmelite Order to celebrate
Pope Honorius approving the Order’s Constitution, which had
been a long arduous process that, wonderfully, led many
Carmelites to seek Mary's guidance and intercession. In
general, it is a feast day to celebrate Mary's help to us through
her prayers. Why is this celebrated on July 16? Because July
16, 1251 was the date on which the Mary appeared to Saint
Simon Stock and gave him the brown scapular. In 1726, this
Carmelite feast was extended to the entire western Church by
Pope Benedict XIII.
I always enjoy reading about the saints – our brothers and
sisters who have made their way from the Church militant (the
Church on earth) to the Church Triumphant in Heaven. These
numerous brothers and sisters of ours (even more numerous
than the Bradys or the Waltons) are inspirational, and provide
a great guide for us in living our life of Catholic faith. Have a
blessed week, and take a few moments to reflect on these
saintly lives.

El mes de julio es interesante, porque la Iglesia Católica,
durante este mes, en la misa, hay más santos honrados por
pulgada cuadrada que cualquier otro mes del año. Como les
conté, este año, hay 21 días santo en julio. Ahora, fíjense ,
cuando la fiesta de un santo cae en domingo, se suprime en
deferencia a la observación del domingo, esto quiere decir
que perdemos tres días adicionales de fiesta de santo (3 de
julio: Santo Tomás Apóstol, 24 de julio: San Charbel; y el
31 de julio: San Ignacio de Loyola). Si se agrega a los tres,
hay 24 días santo litúrgicamente observados este mes!
Ahora eso es más santos que incluso se podría encontrar en
el Superdome de Nueva Orleans! Y eso es sólo este mes.
Estimados Feligreses,
Familias numerosas. Es un sello distintivo del catolicismo mi abuelo era uno de 16 hermanos, y que era parte del
curso de aquellos- tiempos cuando se crió en Sicilia, Italia.
También los medios de entretenimiento así mismo nos han
dado muchas familias numerosas y que hemos llegado a
conocer.
• Una Familia de 12 niños: " Doce en casa ", una película
protagonizada por 1950 Clifton Webb y Myrna Loy (más
tarde rehecho con Steve Martin y Bonnie) sobre las
aventuras de padres que crían 12 hijos y que sienten
nostalgia de la época en que todos sus hijos vivían en casa.
• Una Familia de 8 niños: Una comedia católica sobre una
familia muy católica llamada "Sólo diez de nosotros " salió
al aire en la televisión 1988-1990. Se trataba de una
familia católica (papá, mamá y ocho niños) en California;
el padre era un maestro en una escuela católica local donde
asistieron sus hijos. También hubo un espectáculo llamado
" Con ocho basta " en la década de 1970 que contó con una
familia ejemplar pero su vida real era otra, adicciones,
miserias, arrestos, muertes... La familia más feliz de las
series televisivas de los 70 no lo ha sido tanto en la vida
real.
• Una Familia de 7 niños: En la década de 1970 nos
presentaron a " Los Walton" - una familia pobre de la era
de la depresión, con una mamá, un papá, abuelita, abuelito
y siete hijos. Basado en una historia real, la serie dramática
fue narrado por el hijo mayor : John -Boy Walton . Lo más
memorable es : al final de cada espectáculo , la familia
tendría una larga serie de buenas noches entre John -Boy ,
Jasón , Mary- Ellen , Benjamín , Erín , Jim - Bob , Erín y
sus padres y abuelitos.
• Una Familia de 6 niños: " La tribu de los Brady " Era
una especie similar a la de " Doce en casa ", pero con un
descuento del 50 % . Los Brady tuvieron seis hijos (y
brevemente añadieron un séptimo niño conocido como
primo Oliver - pero él demostró ser tan popular como un
Big Mac en una boda vegetariana, y fue eliminado de la
serie más rápido que una papa caliente en la mano).
Pues bien, en la fe católica somos parte de la comunión de
los santos - nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo - que
existe en el Cielo, en la Tierra y en el Purgatorio. Con esta
familia de santos, a menudo honramos a algunos de los
miembros claves de nuestra familia santa que están en el
cielo con lo que comúnmente llamamos, Días de Santos
cada uno de los santos con nombre de la Iglesia tiene un día
de "Santo." - Y puesto que hay más de 10,000 santos, hay
muchos días de santos. Sin embargo, sólo algunos de ellos

• Lunes, Julio 11 - San Benito: (Nacido 480, murió 547)
San Benito era el hermano gemelo de Santa Escolástica,
que también alcanzó la santidad. Después de haber recibido
en Roma una adecuada formación, estudiando la retórica y
la filosofía. Como adolescente, San Benito dejó Roma y
se fue a las montañas cerca de Subiaco, donde vivió como
ermitaño en una cueva. Pero no estaba completamente solo:
La tradición dice que fue alimentado por un cuervo, y llegó
a conocer un compañero de ermitaño, San Romanus .
Benito fue en última instancia el fundador der un monstruo
(que todavía existe hoy en día) en Monte Casino, y para el
final de su vida se había establecido doce monasterios. Y
seguía atrayendo seguidores, y con el tiempo estableciendo
doce monasterios, junto con la regla benedictina de vida de
sus monjes. Un hecho interesante: Él es el santo patrón de
los espeleólogos, así como el santo patrón invocado contra
la brujería.
• Miércoles, 13 de Julio - San Enrique: Está bien, no sé
cómo era su vida en casa, pero Enrique era el hijo de
Gisela de Borgoña y Enrique el Contencioso. No suena
muy pacífico. Enrique quería ser sacerdote, pero cuando su
padre (el señor Contencioso) falleció, Enrique se encuentra
como emperador de Baviera. Él se casó con Santa
Cunegunda (uno de mis nombres de santos favoritos), y
más tarde se convirtió en emperador romano santo. Fundó
muchas escuelas, mantuvo la paz, protegió a la Iglesia,
ayudó en hacer reformas, y fue famoso por ser generoso
con los pobres. Se dice que en algún momento de su vida,
mientras que él estaba muy enfermo, fue curado por el tacto
de San Benito (sí, lo que acaba de leer).
• Jueves 14 de Julio - San Kateri Tekakwitha: Nació en

su fe grandes abusos y rechazo por parte de familiares y de
los otros indios. La persecución fue tal que huyó de su
pueblo, caminando unas 200 millas, por el bosque hasta
llegar a Sault-Sainte-Marie, a una comunidad de Indios
Americanos Católicos cerca de Montreal (Canadá). Hizo
votos de castidad, y vivió una vida de oración, sencilla.
Ella murió a la edad de 24. Kateri conocida como El Lirio
de los Mohawks. Muchos milagros se han atribuido a su
intercesión. Fue canonizada por el Papa Benedicto XVI en
2012. Ella es la patrona de los exiliados y los huérfanos.
•Viernes, 15 de Julio - San Buenaventura: Nació en 1221
en Toscana. Italia. Se unió a los franciscanos a los 22 años,
y era conocido por su brillante mente teológica. Él Fue

biografía de San Francisco, y varios libros de textos
teológicos y filosóficos. Conocido como el "Doctor
Seráfico" por sus escritos encendidos de fe y amor a
Jesucristo, más tarde se hizo doctor de la Iglesia (gran
escritor). De niño sufría de una enfermedad intestinal;
potencialmente mortal; se dice que la oración de San
Francisco de Asís le salvó la vida. Como resultado de esa
enfermedad, San Buenaventura es honrado como el santo
patrón de aquellos que sufren de problemas intestinales.
• Sábado, 16 de Julio - Virgen del Carmen. Esta fiesta
mariana fue establecido por la Orden de las Carmelitas para
celebrar la aprobación de la Constitución de la Orden por el
Papa Honorio, que había sido un largo y arduo proceso,
que, maravillosamente, llevó a muchos carmelitas buscar
la guía y la intercesión de María. Por lo general, es un día
de fiesta para celebrar la ayuda de María a nosotros a través
de sus oraciones. ¿Por qué se celebra el 16 de julio? Debido
a que el domingo 16 de julio de, 1251 fue la fecha en que
María se le apareció a San Simón Stock y le dio el
escapulario café. En 1726, esta fiesta carmelita se extendió
a toda la Iglesia occidental por el Papa Benedicto XIII.
Siempre me gusta leer acerca de los santos - nuestros
hermanos y hermanas que han hecho su camino desde la
Iglesia militante (la Iglesia en la tierra) a la Iglesia
Triunfante en el Cielo. Estos numerosos hermanos y
hermanas nuestros (aún más numerosos que los Bradys o
los Walton) son fuente de inspiración, y proporcionan una
gran guía para nosotros en vivir nuestra vida de fe católica.

Esta es nuestra parroquia, todos tenemos la
responsabilidad de cuidarla y mantenerla limpia y
bella. Se necesitan más voluntarios para ayudar con el
mantenimiento. Si usted no está en ningún grupo de
limpieza y desea ayudar con la limpieza de nuestra
parroquia por favor, hable con cualquier miembro de la
