Our Pastor’s Page
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep” (Mk 5:39). For many
years now, the mass media has tried to paint a picture of a dead, irrelevant Catholicism. Constant reporting of sex-scandals in the Church, mishandling of public relations at the
Vatican, and liberal-biased coverage of our moral teachings have had a negative impact on
the general public. Maybe even we ourselves have become discouraged at times with constant negativity about the Catholic Church. With the election of Pope Francis a little over two
years ago, news seems to have become a bit more positive about the Catholic Church. However, even the mass media is trying to paint the Holy Father as a capitalism-hating environmentalist while ignoring much of his challenging teachings (e.g., the reporting on his encyclical Laudato Si).
With so much in the news regarding moral challenges in our country (like the Supreme
Court’s attempt to redefine marriage which I will address next week), many may have forgotten that the U.S. Bishops are still battling the HHS Contraceptive Mandate of 2012. We are
currently in a two-week period of prayer called the “Fortnight for Freedom” <http://
www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/fortnight-for-freedom/index.cfm>.
After
three years of fighting the Obama Administration on this egregious policy, some may wonder
if anything good will come out of this effort. I personally believe there have already been
blessings that have resulted from being persecuted. Firstly, the Catholic Church in the United States has had to wake up. Hallelujah! The Church is not dead, but many of us were
asleep! Strangely enough, it required a threat to our religious liberty for us to wake up, but
God — who never stops persisting, who never stops knocking at our door — will use any
means He can in order to reach our hearts. Secondly, we as the Church in the United States
have finally had to have a conversation about Christ’s teaching on marriage and its purposes. Of course, the tension between the Church and the government is not about birth control
but about conscience. Nevertheless, we are starting to see the need for us to talk about what
the Church teaches (and does not teach) about family planning. It has reminded us pastors
that we need to educate and give appropriate ministry instead of simply avoiding controversial teachings.
Finally, the fight for religious liberty has strengthened us as Americans as well as Catholics. There is nothing more American than to fight for freedom! This is what we celebrate next Saturday on Independence Day — that the right to worship God and to individual
conscience is a right not given by the State, but given by God Himself. Just as with each war
to defend our country we put aside our partisan politics for a greater cause, so we as Catholics and Americans put aside our political loyalties in order to fight for a more important
cause, that is, our right to religious liberty. The Church was a sleeping giant, and she is littleby-little waking up. Let’s pray that we will be receptive to Christ’s “Talitha koum” so that we
will be fully awake in our Catholic faith and in our American patriotism.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Lowry

XIII Sunday of Ordinary Time
nuestro patriotismo Americano.
Suyo en Cristo,
Padre Lowry

XIII Sunday of Ordinary Time
Texas Bishops Encourage Witnesses During Annual Fortnight For Freedom
For the third consecutive year, the bishops of Texas are
joining their counterparts across the United States for the
"Fortnight for Freedom". This 14-day period of prayer,
penance, education, and action in defense of religious
freedom opened on Sunday, June 21, 2015, and runs
through the Fourth of July. The theme of this year’s observation focuses on
the "freedom to bear
witness" to the truth
of the Gospel.
The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2015, a
time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series
of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of
persecution by political power—St. Thomas More and
St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and
Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.
político-St. Tomás Moro y San Juan Fisher, San Juan
Bautista, SS. Pedro y Pablo, y los primeros mártires
de la Iglesia de Roma.
The bishops have urged an intensification of penance and prayer for religious freedom in our country. These resources are
provided to help the faithful learn more about our courageous forebears in the faith and to follow their example.
Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty
O God our Creator,
from your provident hand we have received
our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
You have called us as your people and given us
the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God,
and your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us
in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart
to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;
give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.
Oh Dios, nuestro Creador,
amenazados;
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood
and every danger overcome—
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
and all who come after us—
this great land will always be "one nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Te lo pedimos por Cristo nuestro Señor.
Amén.
