November 4 – 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Deuteronomy 6:2-6; Hebrews 7:23-28; Mark 12:28-34
Love is the most important thing
We want to do things right and often wonder what is best.
We need to feel that we are on the right path and that our
children will also go in the right direction. And sometimes,
because we need clarity, we seek rules to guide our lives.
What is the most important thing to do? In soap operas there
is often a very “religious” person, who at the same time is
extremely evil. This person cares a lot for the ritual, but not
about people. Something tells us that such lack of sincerity
cannot be good.
The Israelites had many rules and regulations, some were
extremely detailed. It was sometimes difficult to remember
them all. Jesus said that there is a short summary to
remember, although at times it may not be easy to practice.
It consists of love. When a person loves, you don’t care much
about the rules because instinctively, you will not do
anything that will hurt or harm person you love. You are
going to try to please the person you love in everything,
without thinking about whether or not it is normal. And this
is what God is asking. “with all your soul and all your
strength” implies not only the heart and the spirit, but
everything you have. We would have to ask ourselves, what
strength or energies do we have? And then see if these
energies, resources, and strength are aimed at the mission of
God—who is the good news of salvation and justice for all.
With this love, every step taken in this life will be directed
to God. What pleases God? What gives him glory? That his
children treat each other like brothers and sisters; that their
dignity and rights be respected; that there be peace and
harmony in families; that the good of others become more
important than our own, and that the good of others become
more important than our own, and that truth and justice
reign. You do not need to wait for great moments for this to
happen. In your daily life, directing your life to God
happens every minute and with every detail.
For reflection
What talents or strengths do you have? How are they
directed toward God?
