PARISH ACTIVITIES
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
Pope Francis closed the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in Rome last Sunday on the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the
Universe. The Year of Mercy has been a time of special graces for the entire Church and, indeed a most felicitous initiative of
the Holy Father.
At the conclusion of this ecclesial event, the Pope issued an Apostolic Letter entitled Misericordia et Misera, Mercy and misery,
to further reflect on the meaning of mercy, evaluate the Jubilee and announce some initiatives. The title of the letter is drawn
from St. Augustine’s commentary on the Gospel according to St. John, specifically his commentary on the passage where the
woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus, who does not condemn the sinner, but forgives her and exhorts her to sin no
more.
St. John tells us that when the Lord Jesus confronts the accusers, they leave one by one and only He and the sinner are left. St.
Augustine remarks that when Jesus and the woman are left alone, only Mercy and misery remain. The Mercy of God and the
misery of the sinner. The One who is Mercy incarnate and the one who embodies misery on account of her sin.
Drawing on that beautiful and deep insight of the Doctor of Grace in his commentary on the fourth Gospel, the Pope elaborates
about the meaning of mercy and takes stock on the Jubilee that has just concluded. I encourage all of you to take some time to
read the document.
He also expresses his wish that some of the initiatives of the Jubilee remain, among them the missionaries of mercy, the ability
of priests ordained irregularly by the Society of St. Pius X, traditionalists who follow the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, to
hear confessions and validly grant absolution, and the faculty of all priests to absolve the grave sin of abortion.
Unfortunately, most of the media reporting on this Apostolic Letter focused on this latter initiative and with the usual combination of ignorance, malice, and outright contempt for the most basic standards of truth and professional ethics, their inaccurate
reporting has created a great deal of confusion that I hope to clarify, lest some people think that their sins have not been forgiven.
It is not the first time that the words, writings or teachings of the Pope have been distorted and, sadly, I do not think it will be
the last. One has only to recall the misrepresentation of the Holy Father Benedict’s speech at the University of Regensburg, or
the accusations leveled against Blessed Paul VI after the publication of Populorum Progressio, not to mention the many times
the words of Pope Francis himself have been twisted, prompting the Pope on more than one occasion to ask journalists to be
truthful in their reporting and warning them against slander and misinformation. Just recently, he sent a video message to Radio
Maria, where he urged all mass media outlets to always report truth, beauty and goodness.
Being a historical, hierarchical, incarnate reality, the Church has a body of law to govern herself which is codified into the Code
of Canon Law.
According to the law of the Church, the sin of abortion, because of its gravity, carries the penalty of excommunication and was
reserved to the bishop, just as there are other sins that are reserved to the Holy Father. It is not that it could not be forgiven, as
has been wrongly reported in many media outlets, but simply that the way in which the sacrament of Confession was celebrated
was a little different than would normally had been for other sins.
In the Archdiocese of Miami, because of the great number of abortions due in large part to the infamous Roe vs. Wade, Doe vs.
Bolton and Planned Parenthood vs. Casey decisions of the Supreme Court, the bishops have delegated the power to forgive the
sin of abortion to priests a long time ago. Thus, for example, when I was ordained a priest, I received a letter from Archbishop
Favalora explicitly granting me the power to absolve those who had participated in the grave sin of abortion, so that if, for example, a doctor who performs abortions or a politician who formally cooperates with evil came to Confession, I had the power
to absolve them right away without any need to contact the Archbishop.
The Holy Father Francis, has now decided to grant to all the priests in the universal Church what the Archbishop of Miami had
granted to all the priests in our diocese a long time ago. This action does not deny the gravity of the sin of abortion, as the Holy
Father himself explains in his Apostolic Letter. Abortion like any other sin, no matter how grave, how heinous, how abhorrent,
how shameful, how painful can be forgiven in the sacrament of Confession now as it was before. The fact that there is no sin
that God is not willing to forgive was as true before the publication of Misericordia and Misery as it is now.
The Church in her motherly care for her children vigorously and tenaciously denounces all sins, including the unspeakable
horror of abortion, and calls to conversion those who participate in it, profit from it and enable it while dispensing the mercy
of God in the sacrament of Confession and offering her unconditional love to those who are hurting through initiatives such as
project Rachel.
There is also a lot of media created confusion about the meaning of excommunication, a juridical institute in the life of the
Church.
If one is aware of a serious sin, one should go to Confession before receiving the Eucharist, so as to be in a state of grace. The
fact that one cannot receive communion because of a sin, does not mean that one is excommunicated, because it is not the case
that all sins carry that juridical penalty in the life of the Church, but only a few of them. For example, when a priest directly
breaks the seal of Confession to the detriment of the penitent, he commits a very serious sin that can only be forgiven by the
Pope and incurs automatic excommunication.
Therefore, when the Pope says, for example, that those who are in irregular marriages are not excommunicated, he is not saying anything new, he is simply saying that they are not subject to that juridical institute as many people wrongly believe. He is
not talking, however, about whether or not they can receive the Eucharist. He is not speaking of sacramental Communion, but
simply about whether or not they are bound but a juridical institute.
When it comes to all things Catholic, many journalists and media outlets seem to have very low standards of professional
integrity which is why it is so important that we strive to learn more about our beautiful Catholic faith and that we
pray ceaselessly for the conversion of all, including journalists, so that they would heed the call of Pope
Francis to report beauty, goodness, and truth!

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:
El domingo pasado, solemnidad de Jesucristo, Rey del universo, el Papa Francisco ha clausurado en Roma el Jubileo extraordinario
de la Misericordia. Este año de la misericordia ha sido un tiempo especial de gracia para toda la Iglesia y, ciertamente, una felicísima
iniciativa del Santo Padre.
Como conclusión de este evento eclesial, el Papa publicó una Carta apostólica titulada Misericordia et Misera, Misericordia y miseria, para profundizar en el significado de la misericordia, evaluar el resultado del Jubileo y anunciar algunas iniciativas. El título de la
carta está tomado del comentario de san Agustín al Evangelio según san Juan, específicamente el pasaje de la mujer sorprendida
en adulterio que es llevada delante de Jesús, quien no condena a la pecadora, sino que la perdona y la alienta a no pecar más.
San Juan nos cuenta que cuando el Señor enfrentó a los acusadores, se fueron yendo uno a uno y solamente El y la pecadora
quedaron. San Agustín señala que cuando Jesús y la mujer se quedan solos, quedan frente a frente la miseria y la misericordia. La
Misericordia de Dios y la miseria de la pecadora. Aquel que es la Misericordia encarnada y aquella que encarna la miseria en razón
de su pecado.
A partir de esa bella y profunda intuición del Doctor de la gracia en su comentario al cuarto Evangelio, el Papa elabora algunos
conceptos sobre el significado de la misericordia y hace una evaluación del Jubileo que acaba de concluir. Los animo a que se tomen el trabajo de leer el documento.
También expresa su deseo que algunas de las iniciativas del Jubileo permanezcan, entre otras los misioneros de la misericordia, la
facultad de escuchar confesiones y absolver válidamente otorgada a los sacerdotes ordenados irregularmente por la Sociedad San
Pio X, tradicionalistas que siguen al difunto Arzobispo Marcel Lefebvre, y la facultad de todos los sacerdotes de absolver el grave
pecado del aborto.
Lamentablemente, la mayor parte de las crónicas sobre esta Carta apostólica en los medios de comunicación se concentraron en
esta última iniciativa con la acostumbrada combinación de ignorancia, malicia y desprecio de los más elementales estándares de
verdad y ética profesional esos informes han creado una gran confusión que espero poder aclarar, no sea que alguno piense que
sus pecados no han sido perdonados.
No es la primera vez que las palabras, escritos y enseñanzas del Papa han sido distorsionados y pienso que, por desgracia, no será la
última. Solo basta recordar la tergiversación del discurso del Santo Padre Benedicto en la Universidad de Ratisbona, o las acusaciones lanzadas contra el Beato Papa Pablo VI después de la publicación de Populorum Progressio, para no hablar de las muchas veces
que las palabras del mismo Papa Francisco han sido distorsionadas, llevando al mismo Papa en más de una oportunidad a pedirle a
los periodistas que sean veraces en la forma que reportan, advirtiéndoles contra el pecado de calumnia y la desinformación. Sin ir
más lejos, hace unos días envió un video mensaje a Radio María en el que exhorta a todos los medios de comunicación a reportar
siempre la verdad, la belleza y la bondad.
Dado que la Iglesia es una realidad histórica, jerárquica, encarnada, se da a sí misma un conjunto de leyes para gobernarse que se
encuentran codificadas en el Código de Derecho Canónico.
Según la Ley de la Iglesia, el pecado del aborto, debido a su gravedad, acarrea la pena de excomunión y estaba reservado al obispo,
así como hay otros pecados que están reservados al Santo Padre. No es que no puedan ser perdonados, como se ha reportado
equivocadamente en muchos medios de comunicación, sino que simplemente la forma en que se celebra el sacramento de Confesión es un poco diferente a la forma en que se haría para otros pecados.
En la Arquidiócesis de Miami, debido al gran número de abortos como consecuencia de los tristemente célebres fallos de la Corte
Suprema, Roe vs. Wade, Doe vs. Bolton y Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, los obispos han delegado el poder de absolver el pecado
del aborto a los sacerdotes hace mucho tiempo. Cuando fui ordenado sacerdote, recibí una carta del Arzobispo Favalora concediéndome explícitamente el poder de absolver a aquellos que hubieran participado en el grave pecado del aborto, de manera que si,
por ejemplo, un médico que practica abortos o un político que coopera formalmente con el mal viniera a confesarse, yo tenía el
poder de absolverlos inmediatamente sin necesidad de contactar al Arzobispo.
El Santo Padre Francisco, ha decidido ahora extender a todos los sacerdotes de la Iglesia universal lo que el Arzobispo de Miami ya
había concedido a todos los sacerdotes de nuestra diócesis hace mucho tiempo. Esta acción de ninguna manera afecta la gravedad del pecado del aborto, como el mismo Santo Padre explica en su Carta apostólica. El aborto, como cualquier otro pecado, sin
importar cuan grave, cuan abominable, cuan aberrante, cuan vergonzante, cuan doloroso puede ser perdonado en el sacramento
de la Confesión tanto ahora como antes. El hecho que no haya pecado que Dios no esté dispuesto a perdonar era tan cierto antes
de la publicación de Misericordia y Miseria como lo es ahora.
La Iglesia en su preocupación maternal por sus hijos denuncia vigorosa y tenazmente todos los pecados, incluyendo el horror
incomparable del aborto y llama a la conversión a cuantos participan en él, lucran con él o lo facilitan, al tiempo que dispensa
la misericordia de Dios en el sacramento de la Confesión y ofrece su amor incondicional a través de iniciativas como el proyecto
Raquel a aquellos que están sufriendo.
También hay mucha confusión creada por los medios en relación al significado de la excomunión, un instituto jurídico en la vida
de la Iglesia.
Si uno está consciente de un pecado grave, debe ir a confesarse para estar en gracia antes de recibir la Eucaristía. El hecho que uno
no pueda recibir la comunión a causa de un pecado, no significa que uno está excomulgado, porque no es cierto que todos los
pecados conlleven esa pena establecida en las normas jurídicas de la Iglesia, sino solamente algunos de ellos. Por ejemplo, cuando
un sacerdote directamente viola el secreto de Confesión en detrimento del penitente, comete un pecado grave que solo puede ser
perdonado por el Papa e incurre automáticamente en la pena de excomunión.
Por lo tanto, cuando el Papa dice, por ejemplo, que aquellos que están en matrimonios irregulares no están excomulgados, no
dice nada nuevo, sencillamente está diciendo que, contrariamente a lo que muchos piensan, no están alcanzados por ese instituto
jurídico. No está diciendo, sin embargo, si pueden o no recibir la Eucaristía. No está hablando de la comunión sacramental sino
aclarando que no están alcanzados por un instituto jurídico.
Cuando se trata de todo lo que sea católico, muchos periodistas y medios de comunicación parecen tener estándares muy bajos
de integridad profesional, por eso es tan importante que nos esforcemos por conocer más nuestra hermosa fe Católica y que oremos sin cesar por la conversión de todos, incluyendo los periodistas, para que escuchen el llamado del Papa Francisco a reportar
la belleza, la bondad y la verdad.
