WELCOME TO ST. BRUNO CHURCH/
BIENVENIDOS
At our Sunday Mass, we come together from
all our small communities and celebrate our
oneness in Christ. Take a little time to get to
know the folks you are celebrating Mass with.
BULLETIN DEADLINE: Tuesday 3:00 p.m.
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe
This year marks the parish centennial. One hundred years
ago, St. Bruno Church, after serving for four years as a
mission of St. Catherine Church of Burlingame, became a
separate parish in 1912. The celebration of this historic event
will be on October 5, 6 & 7. That’s 146 days away!
The theme of the celebration is: “We Remember, We
Celebrate, We Believe”. It is adapted from a well-known
Good Friday hymn. We remember with gratitude those who
have been before us, especially the pioneers who started St.
Bruno Church. We celebrate with joy for we are united
despite our diversity; we experience God’s presence, especially in the Eucharist, despite our meanness, at times, and;
we are resilient despite many setbacks. Because of these we
look at the future with optimism. We believe with certitude.
***
There will be a Centennial Dinner and Awards Night on
October 5, Friday, at South San Francisco Convention Center.
In an elegant and formal setting, we will toast to one
another‘s good health and extend symbols of appreciation to
parishioners who have made distinctive contributions to the
parish. Tickets for the event are available with Ofelia
Madriaga.
***
Archbishop John Quinn will preside at the Centennial Mass on
October 6. This will be followed by the Coronation Ball. As
was done in the past, we invite teen-age girls to participate
and vie for the honor to be crowned as the Queen of the
Centennial Year. The Show on October 7 will highlight the
different ethnic communities, their origin and participation.
There will be raffle, food sales, souvenir items and much
more.
***
Yes, we will have a souvenir program. If you want to place a
greeting, kindly contact Thelma Tannis. Also, we will update
the parish photo directory. We had one at the 50th
anniversary of the church but not many families participated.
We plan to have all registered parishioners as well as all
communities included in the photo directory. Art Sanchez,
Ricardo Castillo and Meds Amoyen are in charge. If you want
to do food sales, kindly contact Connie Munoz.
To realize these plans and more, two committees have been
formed, namely: the Centennial Committee and the Festival
Committee. The Centennial Committee chaired by Pamela
Rojas is responsible for all activities that pertain with the
past. The Festival Committee headed by Taufui Piutau.
We invite everyone to lend a hand. Call any of the names
mentioned here and share your time and energy for a
successful Centennial celebration.
***
Congratulations to all our newly confirmed students and first
communicants! Next Sunday, there will be a Tongan Cultural
Mass at 3PM. You are all invited to experience this unique
mass celebrated in Tongan and incorporating ethnic rituals.
Fr. Michael B. Brillantes
Nosotros recordamos, celebramos, creemos
A 146 días!

Long Time Parishioners
Mary Harmon came to St. Bruno Church in 1950. She had
been married two years at that time and already had her
first son, Richard. Her second son, Paul, who was born
after the move to San Bruno, lives close to her now in
Redding, and takes excellent care of her. Mary remembers
vividly the original church, which was like one of the
original mission churches in architectural style, but on a
smaller scale.
Mary was a member of the choir and
remembers vividly Father Doyle, who died the day of the
opening of the current church building (see History Corner).
We miss Mary and she misses us, but she constantly prays
for St. Bruno’s and all of the parishioners. She needed to
move nearer to her son due to health problems last year.
We miss Mary Harmon, and we honor her as a long time
faithful parishioner.

Stewardship by the Book
Jesus’ commandment is that His disciples love one
another, even to the point of laying down their lives, if
necessary. What gifts of myself— my skills and talents,
my time and resources— will best demonstrate my love.
146 Days left for the Centennial Celebration
History Corner
Did you know the history of the bell that is on San Bruno
Avenue to the left of the entrance to the Adoration Chapel?
The church bell, cast in 1886 by the W.T. Garratt & Co. San
Francisco, was erected in the belfry of the original church.
It was rung every Sunday one half hour before Mass and
again at the beginning of Mass. Pioneers say it could be
heard all over San Bruno. This ritual was followed until the
mid forties; then was only rung on special occasions. Rev.
Peter E. Doyle, who was pastor for 27 years, died on
December 24th, 1959. This was the day of the first Mass at
the current church building. The church bell was rung in
the original church building for the last time at his funeral
Mass. We now ring it again on special occasions.
