Love Fulfills the Law
By Jesus' time in Jewish history the Talmud listed the positive laws of
Moses at 248, the negative at 365. Since keeping so many laws was
impossible, a frequent topic was which was the great commandment so
that they might keep it in lieu of keeping all 613. This question, among
others, divided the Jewish teachers.
On this occasion, one of the experts in the Mosaic Law asked,
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (Matthew
22:36). Jesus' answer, however, did not side with one particular group.
Instead, He identified the two commands that summarized all the laws.
The first command: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and
greatest commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38). This command was
given in the Law in Deuteronomy 6:4. Every Jew would know this was
the most important command!
The second command: “And the second is like it: ‘Love your
neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:39). If we are to understand what
God wants from us, we must remember that loving people has always
been a priority of God’s people!
Implication: “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments” (Matthew 22:40). If you really want to understand
how to follow God, take care of two areas in your life: love God and
love others! The first and greatest command covers the first four
commands which deal with our relationship to God. Obedience to the
second command in essence would result in obedience to the other six
commands which deal with our human relationships.
Former Pharisee Paul summarizes Jesus' answer this way: "Let no debt
remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for
he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law" (Romans 13:8).

El Amor Completa la Ley.
En tiempos de Jesús, el Talmud contenía las 248 leyes "positivas" de Moisés,
y las 365 negativas. Dado que cumplir con todas esas leyes era imposible, lo
que contendían los teólogos era cuáles eran los mandamientos más
importantes de los 613. Esta lista junto con otros temas como se puede
pensar dividía grandemente a los maestros judíos.
En esta ocasión uno de los expertos de la Ley Mosaica preguntó, "Maestro,
¿cuál es el mandamiento más importante de la ley?" (Mateo 22:36). Jesús le
respondió, pero de ninguna forma se alineó con ninguna de las partes sino
que tomó dos de los mandamientos y en ellos totalizó toda la ley.
El primer mandamiento: "'Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con
todo tu ser y con toda tu mente,' le respondió Jesús. 'Éste es el primero y el
más importante de los mandamientos'" (Mateo 22:37-38). Este mandamiento
fue dado en la Ley en Deuteronomio 6:4. Todo judío sabía que este era el
mandato más importante.
El segundo mandamiento: "El segundo se parece a éste: 'Ama a tu prójimo
como a ti mismo'" (Mateo 22:39). Si de verdad queremos comprender lo que
Dios requiere de cada uno de nosotros, debemos comprender que amar a la
gente siempre ha sido un prioridad de la gente de Dios.
Implicaciones: "De estos dos mandamientos dependen toda la ley y los
profetas" (Mateo 22:40). Si deseas con todo tu corazón seguir a Dios, debes
tener cuidado con dos áreas de tu vida: ama a Dios y ama a tu prójimo. Este
es el mayor de los mandamientos y cubre los primeros cuatro, que en
realidad son mandamientos que tienen que ver con la relación con Dios.
Obediencia es el segundo mandamiento que en realidad se se hace realidad
pues conlleva a cumplir los otros seis mandamientos que tienen que ver con
la relación con nuestro prójimo.
El transformado ex-fariseo Pablo lo dice de esta forma: "No tengan deudas
pendientes con nadie, a no ser la de amarse unos a otros. De hecho, quien
ama al prójimo ha cumplido la ley" (Romanos 13:8).
Profundicemos: ¿Cómo será amar a Dios con todo tu corazón, alma, mente
y fuerzas?
