Los Departamentos de Estudios Religiosos y de Estudios Fronterizos Chicanos y Latinos de
Arizona State University y la Red de Investigadores del Fenómeno Religioso en México
(RIFREM) convocan a todos los investigadores, estudiosos y especialistas en el fenómeno
religioso en México y más allá al X Encuentro de la Red, a realizarse en la ciudad de Tempe,
Arizona los días 31 de mayo y 1 y 2 de junio del 2007. En este X Encuentro los organizadores
desean mantener el espíritu de discusión e intercambio transdisciplinario que ha distinguido las
anteriores reuniones, además de colaborar en la consolidación de los encuentros de la RIFREM
como espacios permanentes de producción de conocimiento y de adiestramiento y mentoría
para investigadores jóvenes. El X Encuentro también se distinguirá como una oportunidad
para intercambiar proyectos, experiencias e ideas con colegas que estudian el fenómeno
religioso entre poblaciones de origen mexicano allende la frontera norte de México. En
particular se busca crear un espacio de diálogo entre investigadores mexicanos y
chicanos/latinos acerca del fenómeno religioso—como recurso, experiencia compartida y
adaptada, y obstáculo—que cruza y recruza fronteras y que fluye entre puntos de origen y
destino.
En esta ocasión nos proponemos establecer un espacio de análisis de la religión y la
religiosidad en una región cultural y transnacional, a partir de casos específicos que involucran
los procesos de globalización, secularización, laicismo, circulación de las creencias,
globalización, comunicación, fragmentación y recomposición de comunidades y familias y de
las creencias, erosión de instituciones y surgimiento de nuevos cultos. El horizonte temporal a
explorar se ubica, por tanto, entre los siglos XVI y XXI, con la intención de reforzar las
visiones de larga duración y el diálogo entre los enfoques diacrónico y sincrónico,
especialmente entre la historia y las ciencias sociales.
Pretendemos atraer la discusión de estudios de caso, tanto históricos, antropológicos,
sociológicos y psicológicos, así como reflexiones de corte teórico y filosófico que permitan
avanzar en la identificación y comprensión de los factores que, por un lado, han llevado a la
práctica religiosa a una situación de suma complejidad en el mundo globalizado, y por el otro,
han hecho que las religiones históricas se vean sometidas a una erosión acelerada de su
institucionalidad. Lo anterior implica reflexionar sobre los reacomodos y adaptaciones que las
religiones y los creyentes han intentado frente a la libertad y tolerancia de cultos surgida en la
modernidad, los efectos de la ciencia sobre el dogma, las relaciones entre las instituciones
eclesiales y los poderes seculares, el papel de las creencias y los rituales en el México
contemporáneo, el espacio del creyente de cara a una religión constituida y de cara a la
fragmentación de las creencias, el camino de la separación entre la Iglesia y el Estado, la
movilidad y circulación de las creencias, los nuevos mestizajes religiosos, los replanteamientos
doctrinales, etcétera.
The Departments of Religious Studies and Transborder Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies at
Arizona State University and the Network of Religious Phenomena Researchers in Mexico
(RIFREM) invite researchers, students, and specialists in religion in Mexico and beyond to the
10th Annual Meeting of RIFREM, to be held in Tempe, Arizona, from May 31 to June 2, 2007.
The organizers seek to continue the spirit of discussion and transdisciplinary exchange that has
characterized previous meetings, and to collaborate in the consolidation of the RIFREM
meetings as permanent sites for the production of knowledge and the training and mentoring of
young researchers. The 10th Annual Meeting will also stand out as an opportunity to exchange
projects, experiences and ideas with colleagues who study religious phenomena beyond
Mexico’s northern border. In particular, it will provide a site for dialogue between Mexican
and Chicana/o and Latina/o researchers of religion—as resource, shared and adapted
experience, and obstacle—that crosses and re-crosses borders and that flows between points of
origin and settlement.
For this Meeting we propose to establish a site of analysis of religion and religiosity in a
cultural and transnational region, considering specific cases that involve: processes of
globalization, secularization, and laicity; circulating beliefs; media and communications; the
fragmentation and recomposition of communities, families and beliefs; institutional decay; and
the rise of new cults. The periods under study span the 16th to 21st centuries; this allows for a
strengthened appreciation of (long-term) historical context and for dialogue between
diachronic and synchronic foci, especially between history and the social sciences.
We invite historical, anthropological, sociological and psychological case studies, as well as
theoretical and philosophical reflections that aid in advancing the identification and
understanding of factors that, on the one hand, have taken the practice of religion to a situation
of great complexity in a globalized world, and on the other hand, have caused historic religions
to endure an accelerated institutional erosion. The above invite reflection on: institutional and
personal accommodations and adaptations to religious liberty and to cults emerging from
modernity; the effects of science on dogma; relations between ecclesiastical institutions and
secular powers; the role of beliefs and rituals in contemporary Mexico; the personal site/sphere
of the believer over against a constituted religion and the fragmentation of beliefs; the course
of Church-State separation; mobility and circulation of beliefs; new religious hybridities;
doctrinal reformulations, etc.
