Dear Heights Families,
January and February are very busy and important months in the school calendar. It is the time of year when we are
finished with the big holidays that keep us out of school and enter into the strong academic growth time of year.
This is the time of year where the curriculum demands increase and deeper application of skills is achieved.
At this time of the year I want to reiterate the importance of daily attendance at school! We need our students
healthy, well rested, and well nourished each day so that they are available for learning and can be at peak
performance. Our motto is “Every day at school Counts! Be here!”
The third quarter of school is the time of year that the teachers are teaching new content, reviewing previously taught
concepts, and preparing students for the upcoming state standardized tests. When students miss a day of school it is
difficult to make up for that lost instruction. Teachers do a wonderful job of trying to re-teach the information, but it
does not compare to being involved in the lesson when it was presented and discussed with the class. Important
questions and discussions are not easily recreated. This is the reason that we continue to use the attendance reward
system. Seventy-three percent of our students were able to participate in today’s attendance party. Many students
have been sick and I know this has contributed to our decrease in participation.
I realize that January and February are still cold and flu months. Taking a few preventative measures to ensure your
child avoids a cold or the flu can go a long way. Please ensure your child is dressed with warm clothes and jackets
when the weather is cool or rainy. The mornings are still cool! Additionally, establishing a consistent bedtime each
night will ensure your child has enough rest so the body is able to fight a cold or flu. Lastly, a good hearty breakfast
each morning will enable your child to be at peak performance to begin each day.
We know children get sick even with the best preventative measures! I do want to reiterate that if your child is sick,
please keep him/her at home to treat the illness. We do not want illness to spread to the other students! Additionally,
your child is not at peak learning performance when he/she is not feeling well. However, once your child recovers,
please send him/her back to school. If your child is not sick, please send him/her to school everyday! If you are not
sure if your child is sick or not, please bring your child in to see the health associate and she can assess his/her
health. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Please help us with our Spring Festival. The Spring Festival is April 25, 2014. We are currently looking for
donations of items that can be placed into our silent auction. If you have anything to donate or can put us in contact
with some who is willing to donate an item or service please contact the office. Also if you would like to volunteer
at the event, we are in need of parents to help us set up and clean up. With all of us working together this will be
another fun event for our families.

Queridas Familias de Heights,
Enero y Febrero son meses muy importantes y ocupados durante el año escolar. Es la época de año donde
terminamos con los días festivos grandes que nos mantienen fuera de la escuela y entramos en el tiempo donde hay
fuerte crecimiento académico.
Durante este tiempo quiere reiterar la importancia de asistencia diaria en la escuela! Necesitamos a nuestros
estudiantes sanos, bien descansados, y alimentados cada día para que ellos estén disponibles para aprender y
desempeñarse a lo máximo. Nuestro lema es “Cada día en la escuela cuenta! ¡Este aquí!”
El tercer cuarto de la escuela es cuando los maestros están enseñando nuevo contenido, repasando conceptos
enseñados anteriormente, y preparando a los estudiantes para los exámenes del estado. Cuando los estudiantes faltan
un día escolar es difícil de relatar la instrucción perdida. Los maestros hacen un maravilloso trabajo intentando de
enseñar de nuevo la información, pero no se compara a estar involucrado en la lección cuando es presentado y
discutida con el salón. Preguntas importantes y discusiones no son fácilmente recreadas. Esta es la razón por
establecer un sistema premios para la asistencia. Setenta y tres por ciento de nuestros estudiantes pudieron

está enfermo, por favor mándelo a la escuela diariamente. SI usted no está seguro si su hijo/a esta enfermo o no
usted puede traer a su hijo/a a la escuela y la enfermera determinara si puede quedarse o debe irse a casa. Gracias
por su cooperación!
Por favor ayúdenos con nuestro festival de primavera. El Festival de primavera es el 25 de abril, 2014. Estamos en
necesidad de donaciones para la subasta silenciosa. Si usted tiene algo que quisiera donar o nos puede poner en
contacto con alguien que quiera donar algún artículo o servicio, por favor póngase en contacto con la oficina. Si

Gifted Testing
Gifted testing will be taking place on February 10th and 11th here at Madison Heights. There are two different tests:
The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test is for students in Kindergarten, First and Second Grades; The Cognitive Abilities
Test is for students in Third and Fourth Grade. If you would like your student to be tested, please contact your
teacher for the form.
Public Notice for Destruction of Records
Following the microfilming of these records, all
original permanent cumulative records of
students born in 1997 who have withdrawn from
the Madison School District will be destroyed. In
addition, all permanent cumulative records of
students who promoted out of Madison schools
in 2011 will be destroyed. Before any records are
destroyed, parents have the right to review and
obtain copies of their child’s records. Please
contact Madison School District, Student Records
Department at 602-664-7958 before May 16th,
2014.

Kinder students learned about the life of Gloria Estefan. Did you know she is an author, hotelier, parent and restaurateur as well
as an entertainer? Although the students enjoyed her music, they were sequencing events (in Spanish) and learning geographical
facts (e.g. Cuba is an island, Florida is part of the USA.) So next time you have a map handy (on paper or on your internetconnected device) take a trip to Florida and the Caribbean.
3rd grade students are learning to use estar for location. Part of this basic unit is vocabulary drill to expand students’ familiarity
with common nouns. Students who tested out of the basic level vocabulary are working on idiomatic uses of estar. When you are
getting ready for school, why not ask these questions in Spanish: ¿Dónde está tu mochila? (Where is your backpack?) ¿Dónde
está tu libro de la biblioteca? (Where is your library book?)
Our students from 4th grade worked on shoe-shopping dialogues, with two objectives. First, they practiced plural endings on
adjectives (shoes in a shop are always plural.) Secondly, they practiced adjectives of quantity (much, some, all, enough, none….)
Ask your 4th grader to describe his or her shoes to you in Spanish. (I have a lot of black shoes. I have several brown shoes. I have
some athletic shoes.)

This quarter we started out working on
following directions and working as a
team using a parachute. We did many
different exercises with the parachute,
but the most fun, of course, was making
the tent that we all hide under. Then we got out the
bowling balls and pins and learned how to throw a
bowling ball and how to set up pins. We had a great
time watching our teacher’s try and get strikes too. If
you have time to go to a bowling alley and practice
some more, take your student out and let them show
you their skills!

We started out this quarter, dusting off the bowling
balls and pins. We practiced our approach with the
bowling ball, trying to make sure an keep our wrist
straight so the ball goes straight. We worked on how
to set up pins and then we practiced how to actually
keep score during a game. Ask you student what the
benefit of getting a strike or spare is when you bowl,
how does it affect your points? We are currently being
tested on our ability to keep score while bowling. Ask
your student what it is called when you get three
strikes in a row! Take your student bowling one day
so they can show off their skills (and keep score for
you).

Este cuarto empezamos a trabajar en seguir
instrucciones y trabajar como equipo usando un
paracaídas. Hicimos varios ejercicios diferentes con el

Fever Policy-Sick Child Pick Up Procedure
What does the 24 hour Fever Policy mean?
If you child has a fever over 100 degrees, they must stay home and may not return to school
until they have been fever free for 24 hours with out medication. This is very important to
stop the spread of illness.
This was released Jan 22nd, 2014 from the Az Health Dept
After a steady increase in FLU cases this year, Arizona FLU activity hit widespread this week;
widespread is the highest category possible. INFLUENZA has been reported in all 15
counties. Most of the circulating FLU is the 2009 H1N1 virus. Doctor and hospital visits for
FLU have increased over the last few weeks around the state.
Sick Child Pick Up Procedure. When your child is sick and you have been called
to come pick them up from school, please make arrangements to have them picked
up within 30 minutes. If you do not have a way to pick them up, please make arrangements ahead
of time to have a family or friend be available. Thank you for your help in this very important
matter.

News From Eagles Nest Café
We have a new look! Over the holiday and during the month of January our kitchen has been going through a
remodel. This spring I will be offering tours to parents who are interested in seeing the works of a school cafeteria.
Specifics will follow at a later date.
February will be our “Count the HEARTS” contest. This month, do your heart good. Eat healthy, exercise and get
plenty of rest.
Join us for a well-balanced breakfast and lunch. Parents please feel free to come eat with your students and discover
the excellent choices we offer.

Information Regarding Homeless Students
Students are considered homeless if they are:
• In a shelter, motel, vehicle, or campground
• On the street
• In an abandoned building, trailer or other inadequate accommodations
• Doubled up with friends or relatives because they cannot find or afford housing
If children are homeless they have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless
Education Assistance Act. These protections include the right to:
• Go to school, no matter where they live or how long you have lived there
• Be enrolled immediately without birth certificates, immunizations or school records
• Attend school while the school arranges for the transfer of school and immunization records or any
other required documents
• Enroll in school without giving a permanent address. Schools cannot delay enrollment.
• Continue in the school they attended before becoming homeless or the school they last attended
• Receive transportation to and from the school they attended before becoming homeless or the
school they last attended, if requested.

Recycling Progr
Program Update
The program continues to be a great success with all of your support. Many students and
parents are bringing in recyclables from home to put in the recycle bins in the cafeteria.
This has increased our outgoing shipments to Terracycle by almost double from last year at
this time. We just sent out a shipment of our collected Personal Care and Beauty Products
that weighed 27 pounds! That is 27 pounds of waste that will be used again rather than
sitting in a landfill. Isn’t that amazing?! Keep up the great work, Heights!!!
News
• Our continued recycling efforts have not gone unnoticed by our partners at Terracycle.
At the end of October, we qualified and WON The Drink Pouch Brigade Giveaway with one of
our largest shipments yet, of almost 3,000 drink pouches. We won a prize pack from
Caprisun that will be shared on the announcements in January.
• We also were winners in The Lunch Kit Regional Rally Raffle and will receive an official
Terracycle Collection Bin in January.
Don’t Forget
• The holidays are a wonderful time to enjoy friends, family, and togetherness. It is also a
time when we have lots of delicious food and yummy treats. Many of these items come in
packaging that can be recycled at Heights. Please continue collecting Heights recyclables
over the Winter Break. The detailed list of accepted waste is on the back of this update.

• Taking a shower, instead of a bath can help save around
50 gallons of water.
• You can recycle plastic bags at Safeway, Sprouts,
Target, and Fresh and Easy.
• The energy saved by recycling just one glass bottle can
light a hundred watt light bulb for four hours.
