Counting Forward and Backwards
3.3.1 Contar elementos en dos grupos cubiertos

Actividad:
Poner sobre la ficha 14 fichas rojas. Decir: “Aquí hay 14 fichas rojas. Voy a cubrirlas. Poner 3 fichas

Repetir con 23 rojas y 4 verdes, 41 rojas y 2 verdes (rojas mayores que 10, verdes menores que 10)
3.1.1 Missing addend tasks
Material:
2 colors of counters, construction paper to cover Activity: Put out 14 red counters. Say: “here are 14 red counters. I’m going to cover them.” Put out three green
counters. Say:” Here are three green counters. I’m going to cover them.” Cover the counters and ask:
“How many counters are there in all?”
Repeat with 23 red and 4 green, 41 red and 2 green, etc (more than 10 red, less than 10 green)

Materials: Chips or counters, construction paper
Activity: Make a row of 30 chips. Point at and slightly move the 21st chip. Say: “This is number 21.” Cover the
next three chips (22, 23, 24). Point to the 25th counter and ask: “What number is this one?”
Repeat with counters 18 and 21, 24 and 28, etc.
3.3.3 Identificar el sumando faltante

Activity: Show for 2 seconds and then cover 7 red counters. Say: “Here are 7 red counters”. Without the child
seeing, cover 3 green counters. Say: “With the green counters, there are ten in all. How many green
counters are there?”
Repeat with 10 red and 4 green, 15 red and 2 green, etc.
3.3.4 Quitar elementos de un grupo

removed two. How many counters are left?”
Repeat removing 3 from 7, 4 from 15, and so on.

Repeat removing 3 from 14, 4 from 13 and so on.

decir: “ Este es el numero 13. ¿Cuántas fichas están cubiertas?” Repetir con las fichas 7 y 10,
14 y 18, etc.
2- Colocar 20 fichas alineadas. Señalar el numero 10 moviendo la ficha algo fuera de la fila.
Decir: “Este es el número 10” Cubrir las dos fichas anteriores 8 y 9. Decir: “Hay dos fichas
cubiertas. ¿Qué numero es este?” Repetir cubriendo tres fichas antes de 17 y usando otras
combinaciones similares. Se puede extender la actividad utilizando una fila de 30.
3- Colocar 20 fichas alineadas. Señalar el numero 15 moviendo la ficha algo fuera de la fila.
Señalar la ficha número 11 y decir: “ Este es el numero 11. ¿Cuántas fichas están cubiertas?”
Repetir con otras combinaciones y con hasta 30 fichas alineadas.
3.3.6 Counting items in a row with some covered
Materials: Chips or counters, construction paper
Activities: 1- Make a row of 20 chips. Point to and slightly move the 9th chip. Say: “This is number 9.” Cover
the next three chips (10, 11, 12). Point to the 13th counter and say: “This is number 13. How
many are covered?” Repeat with counters 7 and 10, 14 and 18, etc.
2- Make a row of 20 chips. Point to and slightly move the 10th chip. Say: “This is number 10.”
Cover the previous two chips (9 and 8). Say there are 2 chips covered. Point to the 7th counter
and ask: “What number is this one?” Repeat with the three chips before 17 and other similar
configurations. The row of chips could be extended up to 30.
3- Make a row of 20 chips. Point to and slightly move the 15th chip. Say: “This is number 15.”
Cover the previous three chips (14, 13, 12).. Point to the 11th counter and say: “This is number
11”. Ask: “How many are covered?” Repeat with the two chips before 14 and other similar
configurations. The row of chips could be extended up to 30.
3.3.7 Comparar Grupos

Actividad: Colocar 6 fichas verdes y decir: “Aquí hay 6 bicicletas.” Colocar 4 cubos rojos y decir: “Aquí hay 4
niños. Si cada niño monta en una bicicleta. ¿Cuántas bicicletas quedan sin usar?”
Repetir con 10 fichas y 7 cubos, 13 fichas y 8 cubos, etc.
3.3.7 Comparing Groups
Materials: Counters and cubes in different colors
Activity: Put out 6 green counters and say: “Here are 6 bicycles”. Put out 4 red cubes and say: “Here are four
children. If each child rides a bicycle, how many bicycles are free?” Repeat with 10 counters and 7
cubes, 13 counters and 8 cubes, etc.
