Dear Family,
Your child is learning how to estimate with decimals and how to use
estimation to check that answers are reasonable. Your child will learn how to
add, subtract, and multiply decimals, and how to evaluate expressions with
decimals and find solutions to equations.
Here is an activity you can do with your child to help him or her develop
estimation skills.
Rolling Decimals
Materials number cube
Step 1 Roll a number cube five times. Write one three-digit number and
one two-digit number using the digits you rolled. Use a decimal point in
one or both numbers. For example, you might write 23.6 and 0.12.
Step 2 Write an equation for each of the operations using the two
numbers. Estimate the answers to the equations. Compare the results
with your estimations.
Step 3 After you and your child take turns making up numbers and
estimating the results of different operations, choose an estimation
goal, such as 100 or 25.5. Challenge your child to write equations with
decimals that will come as close to the estimate as possible.
Observe Your Child
Focus on Math Practice 2:
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Help your child become proficient with estimating. Be sure to have your
child write or record all estimates for these computations. Solving the
computations and comparing the results with the estimates confirms
your child’s ability to reason abstractly and quantitatively.

desarrollar sus destrezas de estimación.
Lanzar decimales
Materiales cubo numérico
Paso 1 Lance un cubo numérico cinco veces. Escriba un número de
tres dígitos y un número de dos dígitos usando los dígitos que obtuvo
en el lanzamiento. Use un punto decimal en uno o ambos números. Por ejemplo, podría escribir 23.6 y 0.12.
Paso 2 Escriba una suma, resta, multiplicación y división usando
los dos números, como 23.6 1 0.12, 23.6 2 0.12, 23.6 3 0.12 y
23.6 4 0.12. Estime las respuestas a cada uno de los problemas. Por
ejemplo, podría redondear 23.6 a 24 y 0.12 a 0.1 y después realizar las
operaciones. Use una calculadora o papel y lápiz para hallar el valor de
cada problema. Compare los resultados con sus estimaciones.
Paso 3 Luego de que usted y su niño(a) se turnen para formar
números y estimar los resultados de diferentes operaciones, jueguen
juntos un juego. Escojan un objetivo de estimación, como 100 ó 25.5.
Anime a su niño(a) para que escriba una suma, resta, multiplicación o
división con decimales de dos o tres dígitos que tenga como resultado
un número lo más cerca posible de la estimación.
