Your child is learning to think of division as sharing equally or as
repeated subtraction. He or she is also using fact families to understand
how division and multiplication are related. A fact family contains
2 multiplication facts and 2 division facts using the same three numbers.
For example, the fact family for 5, 9, and 45 is:
45 ⫼ 5 ⫽ 9
Your child is learning to divide by the numbers 2 through 9, apply
patterns to divide by 10, 11, or 12, and to follow rules for 0 and 1. Here are
two activities to help your child practice division and multiplication facts.
Fun with Fact Families
Step 1 Have Player 1 and Player 2 each pick a number from 1 to
12 and say the number aloud. For example, Player 1 says “6” and
Player 2 says “8.”
Step 2 Player 1 then says a multiplication fact that includes both
numbers. (6 ⫻ 8 ⫽ 48)
Step 3 Player 2 says a related division fact. (48 ⫼ 6 ⫽ 8)
Step 4 Continue until the entire fact family has been used,
then start again.
Find the Missing Number

Materials Paper, pencil
Step 1 Write out a division sentence using a number from
1 to 12 as the divisor. Leave out one of the numbers.
For example: ________ ⫼ 6 ⫽ 3.
Step 2 Ask your child to fill in the missing number. Encourage
your child to tell you how he or she solves the problem.
