Anger La Ira “In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry” (Ephesians 4:26). “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice” (Ephesians 4:31). “Quítense de vosotros toda amargura, enojo, ira, gritería y maledicencia, y toda malicia” (Efesios 4:31). In Ephesians 4:26 the Greek word for anger is described as the strongest of all passions. Paul concludes that the passion is natural but should be dealt with quickly. Anger in verse 31 is listed with very destructive attitudes and in this form is never justified. All anger is not necessarily sin, but it turns to sin when: • It is selfishly motivated (James 3:16). • God’s goal is distorted (1 Corinthians 10:31). • It is allowed to linger (Ephesians 4:26-27). What does anger look like in our lives? Boiling Point - An eruption of emotion at the first sting and the damage is immediate and blatant (see Proverbs 29:11). Slow Burn - This is the one that eats at us and over time causes us to become miserable and irritable (see Proverbs 30:33). How do we deal with anger? Recognize and admit that wrong handling of anger is sin (see Proverbs 28:13). This confession should be both to God and to those who have been hurt by our anger. See God in the trial. Romans 8:28-29 points to the fact that God is sovereign and in complete control over every circumstance and person that causes you pain. Communicate to solve the problem. Be honest and speak the truth in love. Don’t let it build up. Lay it out there. Attack the problem, not the person (see Ephesians 4:15, 25-32). Final Thought - How you respond to anger is a good indication of where your heart is. As you grow closer to God, the way you deal with anger will naturally honor Him (see Matthew 5:43-48). We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching with all wisdom so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. (Colossians 1:28) www.baseballchapel.org June 30, 2013 Worship Reading – Psalm 86:10-12 “For You are great and do marvelous deeds; You alone are God. Teach me Your way, O LORD, and I will walk in Your truth, give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name. I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever.” Term to Remember – Fruit of the Spirit What the Holy Spirit produces in the life of a believer; “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23). All scripture is quoted from the New International Version unless otherwise indicated.
