July 23-24, 2016 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C
THREE WAYS TO PRAY IN IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY: The Examen This is not the same thing as an
“examination of conscience” one might do prior to
confession. Rather it is a roughly five-step process to
review the content of the day. It moves through stages
of looking for moments of gratitude; to reviewing the
events of the day; to calling to mind anything we regret
or are sorry for; to deciding if we need to reconcile with
anyone; to asking God to be present and give us the
grace necessary for the next day. I have heard the Examen described as “inviting God into our story” – consciously looking for God’s presence in the moments of
the day and paying attention to them in a particular
way.
Consolations and Desolations We believe in a fundamentally incarnate God. The Jesuits further their awareness of this reality by “finding God in all things.” One
way to do this is through identifying consolations and
desolations. A consolation is any experience in which
we feel consoled by God’s presence. These would be
moments in the day when we feel particularly peaceful,
joy-filled, hopeful, loving. A desolation is an experience
in which we feel distanced from God. These would be
moments of confusion, fear, or loneliness. Consolations and desolations are not as simple as saying when
you were happy and sad in a day—this is a deeper reflection than that. These are the times that we felt closest
to God and farthest from God.
Imaginative Contemplation This is a method of praying with Scripture in which we use our imagination to
enter into the passage. Most often it is prayed with a
gospel passage that moves us toward an encounter with
Jesus. In preparation, we read the passage once or
twice. Then, often with eyes closed, we use our senses
to begin to enter into the scene described in the passage: what it must have sounded like, smelled like, felt
like; what the people look like, wear, and how they
sound; where we feel drawn to stand or sit, and how we
participate in or observe the scene unfold before us . . .
all leading up to a personal conversation with Jesus.
Contrastingly to the Examen, where we “invite God
into our story,” imaginative contemplation is described
as “entering into God’s story.” -USCCB
THERE WILL NOT BE DAILY MASS July 19
through August 19 as Father Andrew will be on vacation.
HELP NEEDED: We are looking for

church hall. Please call the parish office if you plan
to attend.

again asked us to provide lunches for the
construction crew on Wednesdays in August and
September. A Sign up sheet is in the hall. Thank you
for your support as we do good for those who do

CATECHETICAL CORNER: WHAT IS
EVANGELIZATION? The simplest way to say what
evangelization means is to follow Pope Paul VI, whose
message Evangelii Nuntiandi (On Evangelization in the
Modern World) has inspired so much recent thought
and activity in the Church. We can rephrase his
words to say that evangelizing means bringing the
Good News of Jesus into every human situation and
seeking to convert individuals and society by the
divine power of the Gospel itself. At its essence are
the proclamation of salvation in Jesus Christ and the
response of a person in faith, which are both works of
the Spirit of God. Evangelization must always be
directly connected to the Lord Jesus Christ. “There is
no true evangelization if the name, the teaching, the
life, the promises, the Kingdom and the mystery of
Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God are not proclaimed
(Evangelii Nuntiandi, no. 22).” - USCCB
HOMES NEEDED: Host homes are needed for 15

Iglesia Católica Romana, San Eduardo el Mártir
24 de Julio, Diez y Siete avo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
SANTO DE LA SEMANA: Ignacio de Loyola
Manresa y viajó a Jerusalén.
a nes.

Escritura; 2. En la Iglesia primitiva; 3. En la

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee: Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that
whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the
adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face
of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the
world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit
and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church,
with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the
blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and
the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
Amen.

YEAR OF MERCY QUESTION
OF THE WEEK:
Happiness can be fleeting. Selfless love has
the potential to carry a couple over the long
haul and bring abiding joy. Is there some way
you can be selfless today? Don’t aim for every
day; just today.
Prayer is described as dialog
with God. What will you ask of
God this week?
As you move through the week how can you
praise, thank and ask God for help?
