Who can receive Communion in the Roman Catholic Church? Any Catholic in good standing can receive Communion. If you have been away from attending Mass for a long time (sickness does not count as being away) you should really consider going to confession before you begin receiving Communion again. If you are married in any ceremony outside of the Catholic Church or were not given permission to marry outside the Catholic Church, you should have your marriage blessed before receiving Communion. If you are a member of any of the Orthodox Churches, you are allowed to receive Communion in the Catholic Church, but please be aware of your Church’s teachings about receiving Communion in the Roman Catholic Church. And of course if you are a member of any of the other Eastern Rite Churches, such as the Byzantine Catholic Church, you may receive Communion. 2. Members of Protestant Churches and Non-denominational Churches are not allowed to receive Communion in the Roman Catholic Church. There are many theological differences that would need to be resolved before that can happen. We continue to hope and pray for Christian unity in the future. 3. If you bring a friend or relative to Mass who is not Catholic, you are responsible for explaining to your guest that they are not allowed to receive Communion. Please do not think the priest or any of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have an insight into anyone’s soul and can distinguish who is Catholic or not when they come to Communion. 4. When you come to Communion, the Bishops of the United States have asked us to all do the same. Going to Communion is a sign of our unity in Christ. Just before you receive the Body and Blood of Christ, you are to bow. You are not to genuflect. It is not a holier gesture to genuflect. If you think that genuflecting or kneeling is somehow better, you are in disunion with your brothers and sisters in the Lord, so you are not in communion. You also pose a hazard for anyone who is behind you who is focused on receiving our Lord and counting on you to follow the correct way of receiving Communion. Many people have tripped over someone who decided to genuflect or kneel for Communion. 5. You are given the option of receiving the Body of Christ in your hand or in your mouth. If you are receiving in your hand, place you non-dominant hand on top of your dominant hand, so if you are right handed you would place your left hand on top of your right hand. For people who are left handed, then you would place your right hand over your left hand. Create an altar with your hands. After receiving the Body of Christ, take a step aside and place the host in your mouth. 6. If you choose to receive the Body of Christ in your mouth, please open your mouth wide enough for the minster to place the host in your mouth without having to have contact with your mouth. Remember, if you lick the minister’s fingers, that minister will be placing the licked fingers in someone else’s mouth. 7. For obvious sanitary reasons, receiving the Body of Christ in your hands is preferred. No one will force you to receive on your hands. 3 8. Whether you receive in your hand or in your mouth, please be clear as to what is your intention. If you come up to receive Communion and you have your hands extended and you mouth open it is very confusing. You will receive the host in your hand in this case. 9. You have the option to receive the Blood of Christ. It is an option. If you are afraid of germs, don’t receive from the cup. If you are sick, don’t receive from the cup. When the minister says “The Blood of Christ” your response is “Amen.” Take the cup from the minister and take a small sip of the Blood of Christ. There are a few people who believe the whole cup of the Blood of Christ is for them alone and drink a large amount. Please take only a small sip. After taking your small sip, hand the cup back to the minister and return to your seat for a time of quiet prayer. 10. The Roman Catholic Church does not practice or allow the dipping of the host into the cup. This practice is known as intinction. If you receive only the Body of Christ, you are receiving the whole of Christ. Yes, it is a fuller sign of receiving both the Body and Blood of Christ, but the Roman Catholic practice is to actually drink from the cup. 11. At Communion time, the hospitality ministers or ushers are responsible for watching that everyone who received the Body of Christ consumes the host. With that said, everyone is responsible to make sure that the host is consumed immediately after receiving. If you see someone bring the host to the pew or start to walk out the door, either ask them to consume the host, give it to you, or notify the nearest hospitality minister/usher. 12. Those who cannot receive Communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing. We ask that those coming forward for a blessing at Communion cross their arms across their chest and bow their heads to receive a blessing. 13. There is a little confusion from time to time because members of Eastern Rite Church come to receive Communion with the same posture of their arms crossed over their chest. We ask our brothers and sisters to follow the custom of the Roman Catholic Church when receiving Communion at our church. We will follow the custom of your Eastern Rite Church when we visit. 14. Parents of babies and small children often have their child in their arms. It might be easier and safer if you receive Communion in the mouth. That way you have your child secure in your arms and still maintain reverence for the Holy Eucharist. (Guidelines for the Reception for Holy Communion from the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops are also printed on the inside front cover of our missalettes.) The Saint Vincent de Paul Society of St. Justin Martyr invites anyone who desires to put into practice their Catholic Faith. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society was founded in 1833 by Blessed Frédéric Ozanam and his companions in Paris, France. The spiritual and social community life of La Colonia Independencia thrived once the little mission church opened in the late 1920’s. Events such as Jamaicas (fiesta/festivals), May Crownings, dances, celebrations of the Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Guadaupe, and Las Posadas were faithfully held. Many forLa Colonia Independencia, probably 1950’s. The mal and informal groups of men and street at left is probably Katella. An early tract map of women devoted themselves to the care of the church and its people, including La Colonia shows it being part of Stanton, with Katella as being “Hill St.” Photo from wikimapia.org the cleaning, maintenance, fundraising, sacramental preparation, and even law enforcement! Because the area continued to be on unincorporated county land, one of its residents was deputized by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Masses were held every Sunday, with Fr. Patrick Browne, pastor of St. Boniface, saying Mass once a month. A church has always been a gathering place of comfort in the time of crisis or need. The Great Depression which began in 1929 resulted in many people losing their jobs, but the church was there to offer solace. In 1933 the Long Beach earthquake was felt in La Colonia, and people swarmed to the church to pray. They struggled during the difficult time of orange pickers’ strike in 1937 (wage at that time was about $1.50 a day.) A flood in 1938 resulted in a large portion of land near the Santa Ana River being under several feet of water, ruining the fields and crops that were being farmed. Again the people came together to pray and assist those in need. Beginning in 1938, Fr. Garcia and Fr. Lopez starting coming to Sacred Heart from a church in Los Alamitos. They served until 1942, when the Columban Fathers were assigned to St. Isidore’s in Los Alamitos. One of the priests, Fr. John McFadden, would ride his bicycle every week from Los Alamitos to Sacred Heart. Other Columban priests who served included Frs. Benito McNally, Joseph Murrin, and Robert Ross. These priests along with members of the community organized Sacred Heart youth groups, parades, fundraisers, and trips to the beach. The Columban priests of St. Isidore’s were given the responsibility of handling Sacred Heart, and it was no longer under the jurisdiction of St. Boniface Parish. World War II in the 1940’s saw many of the sons from Sacred Heart Fr. McFadden with go to serve in the military, which continued through the Korean War, Viethis bicycle nam conflict, and now in the Middle East and beyond. In 1947 the Columban Fathers opened Blessed Sacrament Church in Westminster, and Sacred Heart became a part of that parish with Fr. Robert Ross as its new pastor. The larger parish enabled them to bring more priests to Sacred Heart, including visiting missionaries who would give week-long missions. This resulted in a growing attendance from areas nearby. Talk began of the need for a larger church and a separate community center for La Colonia Independencia. The Sacred Heart Men’s Club was formed in 1947. They realized they needed additional property for the church and fundraising for this was intensified. Land was procured and in the late 1940’s-‘50’s, and local men cleared the land for its future growth. By 1957, Independencia had grown to a community of about 150 families with approximately 1000 residents. The Orange County housing boom of the 1950’s stripped away the surrounding orchards and orange groves. The decrease of farmland resulted in a shift away from farm labor to work in service industries such as hotels, gardening, cleaning, etc. Another change was coming. In 1956 the Archdiocese of Los Angeles purchased an orange grove on Ball Road which was to be the future site of a new Catholic Church. On April 14, 1958, Cardinal McIntyre established the new St. Cardinal McIntyre, Justin Martyr Parish, given that name because at that time it was his feast day. Archbishop of Los Sacred Heart Mission would become a part of the new parish. Next week…. A new parish, a new pastor, a new church. Angeles. Please note that some of this early history comes from stories that have been passed down and may vary depending on who told the story. I am still looking for Sacred Heart and St. Justin history. Please submit to [email protected] . -Irene Kramer, bulletin editor & parish historian.
