Thoughts from our Pastor
Rev. John P. Broheimer
When something bad happens, we sometimes blame God
for it like the people did in the Gospel. We think, God had
the power to prevent or correct this wrong, so why didn’t
he?
It is a mystery why there’s so much evil and misery in the
world, but there is one thing we do know: God does no
evil. He does not, can not cause suffering or sickness or
tragedy.
The true cause of most of the evil in the world is we and
our sins against one another. God could come in and just
take control of our lives and make us not sin anymore and
all the evil in the world would be solved, but that would
violate our free will. He loves us too much to do that. God
leaves us to decide for ourselves how to use our free will for good or for evil. In this we have an important part to
play in shaping the world around - for good or for evil.
As upset as we can be at evil, God is the one who should
really be upset when evil happens. He’s the one that has to
be offended twice: first when we reject him in sin and again
when he takes our sins upon the Cross. But what he offers
when we offend him is love and forgiveness, mercy and reconciliation.
The key to accepting his mercy is honesty and contrition.
Mercy is predicated on our honestly looking at our sins and
having true sorry for having committed them. God’s Mercy
is free, but we can only partake in it when we are disposed
toward it through true contrition.
Lenten Schedule
The Sacrament of Penance
The Sacrament of Penance (Confession) is
offered on the Thursdays of Lent through
March 17 from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm (English/
Spanish). Confessions are also offered on
our regular weekly schedule on Saturdays
from 4:00 pm-4:45 pm, and half an hour
before each Mass. Please do not wait until
Holy Week for Confession.
Stations of the Cross
Fridays of Lent from February 12 to
March 18 - Walk with Jesus and Mary as
He carries the Cross from Jerusalem to
Mount Golgotha. Stations of the Cross
are offered at 5:30 pm in English (with
Eucharistic Benediction), and at 7:00 pm
in Spanish. A plenary indulgence may be
granted under the usual conditions.
III Sunday of Lent
Altar Servers Special Class for all Servers
All currently serving altar boys (veteran and new servers)
are asked to attend a class on Thursday, March 3 from
6:00 pm to 8:30 pm in O’Brien Hall and the Church. Pizza
will be provided; families are invited to bring a snack or
dessert. Please RSVP to Mrs. Gretchen Smith or Mary
in the parish office by Tuesday, March 1. Thank you.

Abstinence and Fasting
 All Catholics 14 years of age and older are required to
refrain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and every
Friday in Lent as a sacrificial penance.
 All Catholics aged 18 to 59 are required to fast on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting includes one regular meal plus two small meals per day, with no food in
between the meals.
 Dispensations for reasons of health or nursing may be given, but
you must speak with Fr. Broheimer.
EPS Baby Bottles
This Lent, St. Peter parish again has the opportunity to support Essential Pregnancy Services in their ministry of helping women to embrace life for their unborn babies. Please
open your hearts to these unborn babies to help these precious gifts from God. Please take a baby bottle found at the
Church entrances, fill it with prayer pledges, coins, bills or a
check. Please return bottles by Palm Sunday, March 20.
40 Days for Life - February 10 to March 20
40 Days for Life is a campaign to save the lives of unborn
babies from abortion. St. Peter parishioners are asked to
pray weekly from noon to 1:00 pm on Fridays at Abortion
& Contraception Clinic of NE (1002 W. Mission Ave.,
Bellevue); and on Thursdays at Planned Parenthood (3105
N. 93 St., Omaha). Please pray for an end to abortion.

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Pensamientos de Nuestro Párroco

Cuando pasa algún mal, nosotros a veces culpamos a Dios por igual hizo la gente en el evangelio. Nosotros pensamos que Dios tenía el
poder de prevenir o corregir este mal, ¿Porque
no lo hizo?
Es un misterio porque hay tanta maldad y miseria en el mundo, pero si hay algo que sabemos: Dios no hace ningún mal. Él no hace, no puede causar sufrimiento o
enfermedad o tragedia.
La verdadera causa de la mayor parte del mal en el mundo
es nosotros y nuestros pecados uno contra al otro. Dios
podría venir y solo tomar control de nuestras vidas y hacer
nos no pecar jamás y todo el mal en el mundo podría ser
resuelto, pero eso violaría nuestra libre voluntad. Él nos
ama demasiado para ser eso. Dios nos deja decidir por nosotros mismos como usar nuestra libre voluntad - para bien
o para mal.
En esto tenemos una parte importante para jugar formando
el mundo alrededor - para bien o para mal. Como disgustados como podríamos estar con el mal, Dios es el que debe
estar realmente disgustado cuando el mal ocurre. Él es el
que tiene que estar doblemente ofendido: primer cuando lo
rechazamos en pecado y otra vez cuando carga nuestros
pecados sobre la cruz. Pero lo que el ofrece cuando nosotros lo ofendemos es amor y perdón, misericordia y reconciliación.
La llave para aceptar su misericordia es honestidad y contrición. La Misericordia es predicada en nuestra honestidad
mirando a nuestros pecados y teniendo verdadero arrepentimiento por haberlos cometido. La misericordia de Dios es
gratis, pero solo podemos tomar parte en el cuándo nosotros estamos dispuestos hacia directo una verdadera contrición.

El ayuno y la abstinencia
 Todos los católicos de 14 años de edad y mayores están
obligados a abstenerse de comer carne el miércoles de
Ceniza y todos los viernes de Cuaresma como penitencia de sacrificio.
 Todos los católicos de entre 18 y 59 años de edad están
obligados a ayunar el miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes
Santo (no más de una comida regular y dos comidas
pequeñas.)
 Dispensaciones por razones de salud o de enfermería se pueden
dar, pero hay que hablar con el Padre Broheimer.
Campaña de Botellas de Bebe
Tenemos la oportunidad de apoyar a Servicios Esenciales
del Embarazo en su ministerio de ayudar a mujeres a elegir
vida para sus bebes aun no nacidos. Durante esta cuaresma
pueden tomar una botella de bebe y llenarla con promesas
de oración, dinero o cheque. Las botellas se encuentran en
todas las entradas de la iglesia. Por favor devolverlas a la
Iglesia de San Pedro antes del domingo de ramos, 20 de
marzo.
40 Días por la Vida
Cuarenta Días por la Vida es una campaña salvar las vidas
de los bebes no-nacidos. Cada iglesia tiene una hora semanal por seis semanas del 10 de febrero al 20 de marzo. Se les
pide a los feligreses de la Iglesia de San Pedro orar de 12:00
mediodías a 1:00 pm los viernes en la Clínica de Abortos &
Contracepción de NE (1002 W. Mission Ave., Bellevue); y
los jueves en Planned Parenthood (3105 N. 93 St., Omaha).
Por favor asistan lo más que puedan en estos 40 días para
ponerle un fin al aborto.

St. Peter Catholic Church in Omaha
will offer a six-part Catholic Bible
study series with DVDs by Bishop
Robert Barron. It will be held on
Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm beginning March 10 (except Holy Thursday,
March 23.) Please register through the

guide is $24.00. To buy the study guide

Catholic Church
A History of St. Peter Catholic Church
tells the rich story of one of Omaha’s
oldest parishes. Written and researched
by James Pieper, this book takes you
from Nebraska’s frontier days to the
modern age. I presents the key historical developments of the parish and
school - and shares a few interesting
anecdotes along the way. All proceeds
benefit St. Peter Catholic Church.

in the parish office, or you may order

Baptism Class in English
The next Baptism class in English for
parents and sponsors will be offered
on Sunday, March 20 from 3:00-5:00

St. Vincent de Paul Collection
On March 5 & 6 we will take up a
monthly second collection for St. Peter
St. Vincent de Paul for the poor in our
neighborhood. Thank you for your

Friday Eucharistic Exposition
All-day Eucharistic Exposition is held
on Fridays after the 8:00 am Mass and
ends with Benediction at 6:00 pm. We

Recollection

Sacramental Preparation and Devotions
Baptism and Godparent Requirements
Parents of children who are six years of age or
younger and in need of Baptism must be registered, active parishioners of St. Peter for at least
three months. Godparents take on serious obligations when they sponsor a person for Baptism
and they should be virtuous and faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16 years old or more,
fully initiated, practicing Catholics; if married,
godparents must be married in the Catholic
Church. Baptisms may be scheduled only after
the parents and godparents have completed the
requisite classes and the parish office receives a
letter from the parish at which the godparents
belong stating that the godparents are in good
standing with the Catholic Church and are eligible to be sponsors. Parents and sponsors must
attend a Baptismal class before the Baptism.
Classes in English usually are offered on the
fourth Sundays of March, June, September and
December from 3:00-5:00 pm. Pre-registration is
required. Baptisms in English are usually offered
on the second Sunday of the month at 2:30 pm
and on the fourth Saturday of the month at 9:00

Catechism Sacramental Preparation
for Children
The catechism school year goes from September
through May of each year. Registrations began in
May for the next school year. Classes are held on
Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12 noon, or
Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. Children
should be registered and attend classes for at
least two years before receiving sacraments. For

Home School Sacramental Preparation
Families who are preparing their children at
home to receive a sacrament this year should
register at the catechism office by September 1,
2015. If your child will be receiving a sacrament
this school year or the following year, please
register during Catechism and Homeschool registration times posted in the bulletin. A Baptism
certificate must be submitted. Please see the
parish website for requirements and important
dates for First Reconciliation, First Communion
or Confirmation: www.stpeterchurch.net/infosacraments.html.
Adult Catechesis, RCIA
Those over the age of seven who desire to become Catholic and/or receive the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation or Communion should
contact Fr. Broheimer for classes in English, or
Sister Clara for classes in Spanish. Classes on
Catholic doctrine in English are offered weekly
from September through May on Tuesdays from
7:15 pm to 8:45 pm. Classes in Spanish are offered on Mondays at 7:15 pm or at 10:30 am. All
are welcome to attend.
Marriage
Parishioners who are registered for a minimum
of six months are eligible to begin marriage
preparation at St. Peter. In addition, the Archdiocese requires a minimum of six months of
preparation prior to your wedding date. To
begin marriage preparation in English or Spanish, please contact the parish office.
Hall Rentals
Parishioners registered in St. Peter Parish for at
least three months may rent the parish halls for
receptions and events. For more information

Requisitos para Bautismo y Padrinos
El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para Padres y Padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. Todo feligrés de San Pedro debe asistir en las platicas para Bautismos en San Pedro. (Si hay
problema con el horario de las pláticas, favor
comuníquese con Mary en la oficina parroquial
al 402-341-4560, ext. 100.) Los padrinos de
otras parroquias deben asistir en platicas en su
parroquia propia, o presentar una carta de permiso de su párroco antes de asistir en las pláticas en San Pedro. El cursillo es valido por tres
años. Padres de niños que serán Bautizados en
la Iglesia de San Pedro deberán estar feligreses
registrados y activos de la Parroquia de San
Pedro por lo menos de tres meses. Padrinos
deberán de ser iniciados completamente, practicando el Catolicismo, asistir en la Misa todo
domingo y día de guardar, y si están casados,
deberán ser casados por la Iglesia Católica, y
tienen 16 años o más. Los padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones muy serias cuando
apadrinan una persona para el bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y fieles católicos. Les queremos animar a seleccionar muy cuidadosamente
los padrinos. Podrán fijar y pedir el día para los
bautismos solamente después de que los papás
y los padrinos hayan completado tres clases de
requisito y después de que la oficina de la parroquia haya recibido de los padrinos una carta
de la parroquia a donde pertenecen los padrinos, en la cual constatan que ellos están en el
buen favor de la Iglesia Católica y que son

La Cuaresma
La Cuaresma es el periodo de cuarenta días antes de
Pascua (excepto los domingos) que comienza el
Miércoles de Ceniza. El Triduo Pascual es los
últimos tres días antes de Pascua: Jueves Santo,
Viernes Santo y Sábado Santo. Hay cuarenta días de
Cuaresma, ya que cuarenta es el número tradicional
para la preparación, dedicación y disciplina. Moisés
estaba en el monte por cuarenta días, los israelitas
estaban en el desierto por cuarenta años, Elías viajó
por cuarenta días a la cueva de su visión, Nínive se le
dio cuarenta días para arrepentirse, y lo más
importante que Jesús ayunó y oró en el desierto por
cuarenta días. Es apropiado para los cristianos a
imitar a nuestro Señor con un período de cuarenta
días dedicado a la oración, el ayuno y las obras de
caridad.
La mayoría de nosotros estamos acostumbrados a
“renunciar de algo para la Cuaresma.” Esta
costumbre es muy buena. A medida que avanzamos a
través de la disciplina del sacrificio, se aprende a
purificar nuestros corazones y mentes de los deseos
terrenos en favor de los deseos celestiales. Por
“probar” a nosotros mismos en las cosas pequeñas a
través de estos sacrificios, podemos aprender a elegir
los caminos de Dios en los asuntos más grandes.
Jesús ciertamente compuesta por nuestros pecados
en la Cruz, pero eso no quiere decir que nosotros
sólo pasivamente disfrutar de todos los beneficios de
la Cruz sin ninguna acción de nuestra parte.
Necesitamos unir nosotros mismos activamente al
sacrificio de Jesús con el fin de recibir sus beneficios.
“Toma tu cruz”, dice el Salvador.
Una forma de hacer esto es a través de la penitencia.
En la penitencia elegimos ser uno con Cristo en sus
sufrimientos con el fin de compensar por nuestros
pecados. Como dice San Pablo, somos “coherederos
de Cristo, ya que sufrimos con él, para ser también
con él glorificados.” Jesús dijo: “Este tipo no puede
echarse sino mediante la oración y el ayuno.”
Mientras que sacrifiquemos algo para la Cuaresma
por nuestro amor de Dios, nuestra disciplina de
Cuaresma no está limitada a eso. El miércoles de
ceniza en el Evangelio nuestro Señor nos enseña en
las tres eminentemente buenas obras: la oración, el
ayuno y la limosna. Todos los tres deben ser
incluidos como la base de nuestros ejercicios de
Cuaresma porque los tres nos lleven a la conversión.
Aquí están algunas sugerencias para cada una de
estas áreas. Sea creativo, sin embargo. Lo con que
tengamos dificultades para hacerlo o renunciar,
podría ser exactamente lo que debemos hacer.

Por favor, pida al Espíritu Santo para guiar a sus devociones y sacrificios de Cuaresma. Pide al Señor lo
que le iba a complacer mejor: la lectura de las Sagradas Escrituras, más oración y Confesiones, asistiendo
al Vía Crucis, la Misa diaria, las obras de misericordia
corporales y espirituales, o vivir más sencillamente.
No tenga miedo de entrar en el desierto con Cristo.
El ayuno y la abstinencia
Todos los católicos de 14 años de edad y mayores
están obligados a abstenerse de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los viernes de Cuaresma como penitencia de sacrificio.
Todos los católicos de entre 18 y 59 años de edad
están obligados a ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el
Viernes Santo (no más de una comida regular y dos

Lent
is the forty day period
before Easter (excluding
Sundays) which begins on
Ash Wednesday. The Sacred
Triduum is the last three
days before Easter: Holy
Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
There are forty days of Lent because forty is the
traditional number for preparation, devotion, and
discipline. Moses was on the mountain forty days,
the Israelites were in the desert forty years, Elijah
traveled forty days to the cave of his vision,
Nineveh was given forty days to repent, and most
importantly Jesus fasted and prayed in the desert
forty days. It is fitting for Christians to imitate
our Lord with a forty-day period devoted to
prayer, fasting, and charitable works.
Most of us are accustomed to “giving something
up for Lent.” This is a very good custom. As we
go through the discipline of sacrifice, we learn to
purify our hearts and minds of earthly desires in
favor of heavenly desires. By “proving” ourselves
in small matters through these sacrifices we can
learn to choose God’s ways in larger matters.
Jesus certainly made up for our sins on the Cross,
but that doesn’t mean we just passively sit back to
enjoy all the benefits of the Cross without any
action on our part. We need to actively join
ourselves to his sacrifice in order to receive his
benefits. “Take up your cross,” the Savior says.
One way to do this is through penance. In penance
we choose to be one with Christ in his suffering in
order to make up for our sins. As St. Paul says, we
are “joint heirs with Christ if only we suffer with
him so that we may also be glorified with him.”
Jesus said, “This kind can only come out through
prayer and fasting.” While we may sacrifice for
our love of God by giving something up for Lent,
our Lenten discipline is not limited to that. On
Ash Wednesday our Lord instructs us in the
Gospel on the three eminently good works:
prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. All three should
be the basis of our Lenten exercises because all
three help bring us to conversion. Here are some
suggestions for each of these areas. Be creative,
though. Whatever we have a hard time doing or
giving up, that might be exactly what we need to
work on.

Read the Scriptures (especially the Passion)
Read the daily Mass readings
Pray the Rosary (Sorrowful Mysteries)

Pray for the conversion of sinners
Pray for/with your family
Pray for more vocations to the priesthood
Read a good spiritual book

No desserts
No snacks between meals

Make your home a “technology free zone” for a few
days during Lent (no TV, radio, internet,
music, video games, texting, Facebook, cell
phone, etc.) Only in the silence will we hear
the Lord speaking.

Lenten Schedule
The great season of Lent is a grand opportunity for
all of us who have been baptized to celebrate grace
and recommit ourselves to our baptismal promises:
to renounce Satan and all his works and to embrace
Jesus Christ and our Catholic Faith.
Please ask the Holy Spirit to guide your Lenten devotions and sacrifices. Ask the Lord what would
please Him most: reading Sacred Scripture, more
prayer and Confessions, attending Stations of the
Cross, daily Mass, the corporal and spiritual works
of mercy, or living more simply. Don’t be afraid to
enter into the desert with Christ.
Abstinence and Fasting
All Catholics 14 years of age and older are required
to refrain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and
every Friday in Lent as a sacrificial penance.
All Catholics aged 18 to 59 are required to fast on
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting includes
one regular meal plus two small meals per day, with
no food in between the meals.
Dispensations for reasons of health or nursing may be
given, but you must speak with Fr. Broheimer.

The morning will begin with Holy Mass at 8:00 am
followed by donuts and coffee and reflections on the
Seven Sorrows of Our Lady.
