Thoughts from our Pastor

Canon law of the Catholic Church stipulates
that priests as well as religious, for their spiritual health above all, can go on vacation for
30 days per year. Far be it from me to disagree with Canon Law, so I will be out of
town on vacation from Monday 11 July
through Wednesday 27 July. I am travelling
with a priest friend, his brother, and another
friend to nine of the eleven Western States (New Mexico
and Washington had to be left out this time). Please pray for
safe travels and rest. If you have a bad priest, then you need
a break from him; if you have a good priest, he deserves
some time off. Either way, I'm going. See you when I return, and you will remain in my prayers and Masses.

The need is urgent for Congress to enact the Conscience
Protection Act (CPA) of 2016. Government should not
force hospitals, doctors, nurses and other providers to stop
offering much-needed health care because they cannot in
good conscience participate in destroying life.
On June 21, a ruling by the federal Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Civil rights allowed California to continue forcing health plans to cover abortions has prompted
the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to call for an immediate federal remedy. That remedy is the CPA which will
protect healthcare providers from being forced to pay for or
participate in abortions, and allow victims of discrimination
a “right of action” to defend their rights in court. The CPA
will make it even clearer that sponsors or providers of
health plans that do not include elective abortion cannot be
discriminated against.
Please take the following actions immediately:
Send emails to your federal Representatives through the
HumanLifeActionCenter.org.
• Contact your federal Representative by phone. Call their
Washington DC or local office. You can find their
phone numbers at www.necatholic.org/public-policy/
elected-officials/. The following may be used as a suggested message: I urge you to enact H.R. 4828/S. 2927,
the Conscience Protection Act of 2016, to defend the
conscience rights of those who wish not to be involved
in supporting abortion. Enacting this law is even more
urgent with the recent decision by the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services to allow the state of California to continue forcing health plans to cover elective
abortions. This bill is needed now to stop further discrimination against all people who respect unborn hu•

man life. It is wrong for government to force Americans to violate their deeply held convictions on respect
for human life.
Panhandling
Please, under no circumstances give money to panhandlers
on our parish campus. It encourages this behavior and actually creates a very serious security issue. If you encounter a
panhandler, please direct him or her to the Rectory only.
Please never give away cash to panhandlers, no matter if it is
just a small amount.
Sometimes the people on campus are people who are simply
in need. Other times, there are people who are quite aggressive or even dangerous. If at any time you encounter a panhandler, even if you do not sense danger, please do the following:
• Try to move the conversation to a public place where
others can see you.
• Do not allow yourself to be drawn into a long conversation.
• Do not give them cash – not even a small amount.
• Direct them to the Parish Office or to go to the Office
during business hours.
• If they persist in soliciting, make them aware that soliciting money is prohibited on campus.
• If they still persist in an aggressive fashion, please
threaten to call the police and then please actually do
call 911.
Our parish does not ignore those in need. Our parish, especially through our St. Vincent de Paul Chapter, is very generous: help with food, clothing, rent, utilities, and direction
to agencies who can also offer help including shelter.
On another related point about security on campus, please
do not let small children use the restrooms on their own.
When the church is open, people besides those attending
Mass frequently use our restrooms. It is best practice to stay
with your younger children to make sure they are safe.

año. Por mi intención de estar de acuerdo con el Derecho
Canónico, así que voy a estar de vacaciones fuera de la ciudad desde el lunes 11 julio al miércoles 27 de julio. Estaré
viajando con un amigo sacerdote, su hermano, y otro amigo
a nueve de los once Estados Occidentales (Nuevo México y
Washington tuvieron que ser dejados de lado en esta ocasión). Por favor, oren para viajes seguros y descanso. Si ustedes tienen un mal sacerdote, entonces necesitan un descanso de él; si tienen un buen cura, pues él merece un tiempo de descanso. De cualquier manera, voy. Nos vemos

Mendigos
Por favor, bajo ninguna circunstancia no le den dinero a la
gente mendigando en el campo parroquial. Estas personas
se acostumbran a pedir y causan problemas muy serios en
cuanto a la seguridad de nuestra Iglesia. Si se encuentran
con alguna persona pidiendo dinero o ayuda, por favor solo
indiquen como llegar a la rectoría. Por favor nunca den
dinero. No importa la cantidad.
A veces las personas que se acercan a la iglesia son personas
pacíficas y realmente en necesidad. Pero en otras ocasiones
podrían ser muy agresivos o hasta peligrosos. Si en algún
momento se encuentran con una persona merodeando y
pidiendo dinero – aún si no presienten algún peligro – por
favor sigan las siguientes pautas:

Traten de moverse hacia un sito abierto donde otra
gente los puedan ver.
No se dejen llevar a una larga conversación.
No les den dinero, ni siquiera un monto pequeño.
Indíquenles que se dirijan a la Oficina Parroquial durante horas de oficina.
Si persisten, háganles saber que está prohibido solicitar
dinero en el campo parroquial.
Si aún así persisten o se vuelven agresivos, por favor
adviertan que se les llamará a la policía y en seguida
marquen 911.
Nuestra parroquia no ignora a los que están en necesidad.
Nuestra parroquia, especialmente a través de la organización
San Vicente de Paulo – el propósito de nuestra segunda
colecta mensual – es muy generosa con: comida, ropa, renta,
pago de servicios públicos, y otros servicios.
Así mismo, se les suplica que no permitan que sus hijos pequeños vayan a los sanatorios sin estar acompañados de
algún adulto. Cuando la Iglesia está abierta, entran personas
que no vienen a la celebración de la Misa para usar los sanitarios. Por el bien de sus hijos se les aconseja no dejarlos
solos. Gracias.

Donuts on July 3
All are invited for donuts, coffee and
fellowship in McMahon Hall after the
Sunday morning Masses on July 3. This
week donuts are hosted by the Saint
Peter Knights of Columbus.
St. Vincent de Paul Collection
This weekend we will take our monthly
collection for the St. Peter St. Vincent
de Paul Conference to assist the poor
in our neighborhood. Thank you for
your generosity.
Doors to O’Brien Hall and St. Peter
School
The code used to enter O’Brien Hall,
and the locks on the Boys’ Entrance
doors to St. Peter School have been
changed to improve campus security. If
you need the new O’Brien Hall code or
a school key, please contact the parish
office. The breezeway doors between
O’Brien Hall and the garages are now
locked each evening.
Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays
“Could you not watch one hour with
Me?” Eucharistic Adoration is held on
Fridays from 8:30 am-6:00 pm. (Please
use the west door of the church with
the wheelchair ramp.) We are in need
of more Adorers to spend an hour with
Jesus. Please contact the parish office
to sign up for an hour.
Readers and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs)
If you are interested in becoming a
Reader at Mass or an EMHC to bring
Holy Communion to the elderly and
homebound members of our parish,
please contact the parish office. Archdiocesan training will be held in August. A mandation ceremony will be
held in September.
Blessing & Conferral of Scapulars
Saturday, July 16 is
the Feast of Our
Lady of Mount Carmel and on that day
we will offer the
Blessing and Conferral of Scapulars
after the 8:00 am
and 5:00 pm Masses. Please bring a
scapular; additional
scapulars will be provided for those
without one.

and Homeschool Sacramental Preparation
Registrations for our catechism classes
for children and for homeschooled
children who are preparing to receive a
Sacrament during the coming school
year are now available on Wednesdays
from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 10:30 am-12:00 noon in the
Catechism Office (room 103 in the
school.) Ring the doorbell next to the
doors on the northeast corner of the
school (Boys’ Entrance). Registrations
are also available after the weekend
Masses on July 16-17 and August 13-14
in O’Brien Hall. Homeschooling families whose children are preparing to
receive a sacrament in the coming

is partnering with St. Vincent de
Paul Thrift Store, 2101 Leavenworth
St. Peter SVdP Conference will receive
10% of the stores sales to help the
poor, and in return we provide volunteers to help sort, tag and display items
in the store. This would be a perfect
family project. What better way to
show your kids how to hang up their
clothes! Seriously, the stores desperately need our help and we need the store
to stay open, so we can send our clients
in the neighborhood to get furniture
and clothes. Store Hours: 9 am-5 pm

Sacramental Preparation and Devotions
Baptism and Godparent Requirements
Parents of children who are in need of Baptism
must be registered, active parishioners of St.
Peter for at least three months. Godparents take
on serious obligations when they sponsor a person for Baptism and they should be virtuous and
faithful Catholics. Godparents must be 16 years
old or more, fully initiated, practicing Catholics;
if married, godparents must be married in the
Catholic Church. Baptisms may be scheduled
only after the parents and godparents have completed the requisite classes and the parish office
receives a letter from the parish at which the
godparents belong stating that the godparents
are in good standing with the Catholic Church
and are eligible to be sponsors. Parents and
sponsors must attend a Baptismal class before
the Baptism. Classes in English usually are offered on the fourth Sundays of March, June,
September and December from 3:00-5:00 pm.

are usually offered on the second Sunday of the
month at 2:30 pm and on the fourth Saturday of

Catechism Sacramental Preparation
for Children
The catechism school year goes from September
through May of each year. Registrations began in
May for the next school year. Classes are held on
Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12 noon, or
Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. Children
should be registered and attend classes for at
least two years before receiving sacraments. For

St. Vincent de Paul Part-time Jobs

Home School Sacramental Preparation
Families who are preparing their children at
home to receive a sacrament this year should
register at the catechism office by September 1,
2015. If your child will be receiving a sacrament
this school year or the following year, please
register during Catechism and Homeschool registration times posted in the bulletin. A Baptism
certificate must be submitted. Please see the
parish website for requirements and important
dates for First Reconciliation, First Communion

Adult Catechesis, RCIA
Those over the age of seven who desire to become Catholic and/or receive the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation or Communion should
contact Fr. Broheimer for classes in English, or
Sister Clara for classes in Spanish. Classes on
Catholic doctrine in English are offered weekly
from September through May on Tuesdays from
7:15 pm to 8:45 pm. Classes in Spanish are offered on Mondays at 7:15 pm or at 10:30 am. All
are welcome to attend.
Marriage
Parishioners who are registered for a minimum
of six months are eligible to begin marriage
preparation at St. Peter. In addition, the Archdiocese requires a minimum of six months of
preparation prior to your wedding date. To
begin marriage preparation in English or Spanish, please contact the parish office.

Requisitos para Bautismo y Padrinos
El Cursillo Pre-Bautismal para padres y padrinos es requerido para Bautismos. Todo feligrés de San Pedro debe asistir en las pláticas para Bautismo en San Pedro. (Si hay
problema con el horario de las pláticas, favor
comuníquese con Mary en la oficina parroquial
al 402-341-4560, ext. 100.) Los padrinos de
otras parroquias deben asistir en pláticas en sus
parroquias propias, o presentar una carta de
permiso de su párroco antes de asistencia en las
pláticas en San Pedro. El cursillo es valido por
cinco años. Padres de niños que serán Bautizados en la Iglesia de San Pedro deberán estar
feligreses registrados y activos de la Parroquia
de San Pedro por lo menos de tres meses. Padrinos deberán de ser iniciados completamente,
practicando el Catolicismo, asistir en la Misa
todo domingo y día de guardar, y si están casados, casados por la Iglesia Católica, y tienen 16
años o más, y sus propios hijos deben ser Bautizados. Los padrinos toman sobre sí unas obligaciones muy serias cuando apadrinan una persona para el Bautismo y deben ser virtuosos y
fieles católicos. Los padrinos deben presentar
una carta de aprobación firmada por el párroco
de su parroquia. Para padrinos casados, por
favor llevar copia de la acta de Matrimonio por
la Iglesia Católica. El cursillo Bautismal se ofrecen cada dos meses en tres domingos. Bautismos en español son ofrecidos usualmente el
primer, segundo y tercer sábado del mes a las
9:00 am y el cuarto domingo del mes a las 2:30

Primera Comunión y Confirmación
Todas las clases para niños se dan de septiembre a mayo cada año. Inscripciones están de

Quinceañeras

• La quinceañera debe haber recibido los
sacramentos de iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación, Eucaristía o Primera Comunión) y debe participar activamente en la
parroquia, particularmente en las Misas
dominicales y el pastoral juvenil. La quinceañera debe presentar copias de los certificados de Confirmación y Primera Comunión.
• La quinceañera debe haber asistido por lo
menos a cuatro pláticas de preparación en
la Iglesia de San Pedro (Usualmente las
clases están ofrecidas en los meses de febrero, mayo, agosto y noviembre).
