Each week the children will learn or review the Word of the Week. Parents are asked to review the words at home. Every 8-10 weeks a vocabulary assessment will be given in Grades 3-12. Mid and End of Semester assessments will be administered on the dates below. Results will be shared with parents in the end of semester progress reports. August 17 Sacrament of Reconciliation – also known as the Sacrament of Penance and Confession – when Catholics confess their sins and celebrate God’s forgiveness. 24 Sacraments of Initiation—The three sacraments of initiation are Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, and are the sacraments we receive to enter into the Catholic Church. 31 No Classes on Sunday and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday classes meet September 7 October Holy Orders—Sacrament received by men who are called by God through the Church to become ordained ministers who receive the power to minister in a special way in the Christian community as Bishops, Priests and Deacons. 14 No Classes, Cobb & Cherokee County Fall Break 21 Immaculate Conception—Mary was born without original sin. The Church celebrates Mary’s freedom from original sin on December 8. 28 Assumption of Mary—When her earthly life was ended, Mary was taken up to heaven, body and soul. Celebrated on August 15. 5 Rosary—the Catholic practice of devotion to Mary that recalls the mysteries of Christ. 12 Mary—is the mother to the Church; she is the new Eve and the mother of all humankind; she is the model of faith and loyalty for Christians and for the Church. Mary is one of the poor and humble of the world who awaits fulfillment of God’s promise. 19 Covenant – in the Old Testament a covenant was the promise of love and partnership that God made with his people. Example; Covenant with Moses in the Ten Commandments. 26 Trinity—The central mystery of Christian faith and life; the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each person of the Trinity is really and fully God. Catholics believe the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. November 2 9 Communion of Saints—the community of believers, those who are alive now and those who have died in God’s company, who form one body in Christ. Ascension—We celebrate Jesus’ going into heaven 40 days after Easter. 16 Pentecost—The Holy Spirit coming to the Apostles, 50 days after Easter. Also called the Birthday of the Church. 23 No Classes, Thanksgiving Break 30 Advent— four weeks to prepare for the special feast of Christmas. December 7 Hope—-The virtue that helps us trust in God’s promises even when it is difficult to do so; confidence that God will raise you to new life. Mid-semester assessment Vocabulary assessment January February 14 Gospel—Good news, remembering the important events in Jesus’ life and his teachings. 4 The Evangelists—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John 11 Liturgy of the Word—Remembering and sharing our stories from both the Jewish (Old) and New Testaments. 18 No Classes on Sunday and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday classes meet 25 Tradition & Scripture—the two sources of God’s revelation. Tradition is the belief and practices in the Church that are passed down from one generation to the next under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Scripture is the inspired Word of God; the Bible. 1 Magisterium—The Church’s authority to teach on matters of faith and morals. End of semester assessment Vocabulary assessment (No Class on 2/1 at 4:30 and 7:30 PM) March April May 8 Fasting & Abstinence—The Church calls the faithful to fast to remind us of our need to be filled with God. The two days that adult Catholics are required to fast are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, those 14 yrs and older are called to abstain from meat. 15 No Classes this week (Ash Wednesday is February 18) 22 St. Peter—The first head of the Church. 1 Cardinal, Archbishop & Bishop—head of the diocese. (A pastor is the head of the parish) 8 Intercessory Prayer— Prayers offered for the needs of our community and the world around us. 15 Catechumenate – the process of initiating people into the Church through the OCI program. 22 Paschal Mystery—Jesus’ suffering, death, resurrection and ascension. 29 Sunday classes meet, No Classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday– Holy Week 5 12 No Classes— Easter & Spring Break Resurrection—Jesus rising from death to new life; confirms all that he taught about himself and the kingdom of God. 19 Parables — Jesus told these stories to teach about the kingdom of God. 26 Vine and the Branches—One of the sayings of Jesus to describe how the Church is united to and dependent upon Jesus Christ. 3 10 Mid-semester assessment Vocabulary assessment End of semester assessment Vocabulary assessment No Sunday Class—Last class for weekday classes Cada semana los niños aprenderán o revisarán la Palabra de la Semana. Se les pide a los padres revisar las palabras en casa. Cada 8-10 semanas se hace un examen de vocabulario en los grados 3-12. La Iglesia celebra su pureza el 8 de Diciembre. 28 Asunción de María—Cuando su vida terrenal terminó, María fue llevada al cielo en cuerpo y alma. Se celebra el 15 de Agosto. 5 Rosario—práctica católica de devoción a María, la cual resume los misterios de la vida de Cristo. 12 María —es la madre de la Iglesia; ella es la nueva Eva y la madre de la humanidad; ella es el modelo de fe y lealtad para los cristianos y para la Iglesia. María es un ser pobre y humilde que espera y confía pleanamente en la promesa del Señor. 19 Alianza – en el Viejo Testamento una alianza era la promesa de amor que Dios hizo con su pueblo. Por ej. La alianza con Moisés en los Diez Mandamientos. 26 Trinidad—El misterio central de la vida y la fe cristianas; el Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Cada persona de la Trinidad es real y completamente Dios. Los católicos creemos que el Espíritu Santo es la tercera persona de la Trinidad. Noviembre 2 9 Comunión de los Santos—la comunidad de creyentes, aquellos que viven y los que han muerto en la compañía de Dios, forman un cuerpo en Cristo. Ascensión—Celebramos que Jesús fue al cielo 40 días después de la Pascua. 16 Pentecostés—La venida del Espíritu Santo a los Apóstoles, 50 días después de la Pascua. Diciembre 7 Examen de Vocabulario a Mitad del Semestre Esperanza—-La virtud que nos ayuda a confiar en las promesas de Dios, aún cuando es difícil. Es la confianza en que Dios nos elevará a una nueva vida. Examen de Vocabulario al Final del Semestre Enero Febrero 14 Evangelio—Buena Nueva, recordamos la importancia de los eventos en la vida de Jesús y sus enseñanzas. 4 Los Evangelistas—Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan 11 Liturgia de la Palabra—Recordamos y compartimos nuestras historias desde el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento. 18 No Clases el Domingo y el Lunes, Martes y Miércoles hay clases. 25 Tradición & Escritura—las dos fuentes de revelación de Dios. La tradición es la creencia y la práctica en la iglesia que se pasa de una generación a otra bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo. La Escritura es la Palabra inspirada de Dios; La Biblia. 1 Magisterio—La autoridad de la iglesia que enseña lo relacionado con la fe y la moral. (No hay Clases el Domingo 1ro. de Febrero a las 4:30 ni a las 7:30 PM) Marzo Abril 8 Ayuno & Abstinencia—La Iglesia llama a los creyentes a ayunar, y así recordar nuestras necesidades de ser llenados con Dios. Los dos días que se requiere que los adultos ayunen son El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. El Miércoles de Ceniza y los Viernes durante la Cuaresma, los mayores de 14 años deben abstenerse de comer carne. 15 No Clases esta semana (Miércoles de Ceniza es el 18 de Febrero) 22 San Pedro—La primera cabeza de la Iglesia. 1 Cardenal, Arzobispo y Obispo—cabeza de la diócesis. (Un pastor es la cabeza de una parroquia) 8 Oración de Intercesión— Oraciones ofrecidas por las necesidades de nuestra comunidad y del mundo a nuestro alrededor. 15 Catecumenado – el proceso de iniciar personas en la iglesia a través del programa de OCI. 22 Misterio Pascual—Sufrimiento, muerte, resurrección y ascención de Jesús. 29 Hay clases el Domingo. No hay clases Lunes, Martes ni Miércoles -Semana Santa. 5 No hay Clases— Pascua y vacaciones de primavera Resurrección—Jesús se levanta de la muerte a una nueva vida; confirmando todo lo que enseñó acerca de Él y del Reino de Dios. 12 Mayo 19 Parábolas — Jesús contó estas historias para enseñar acerca del Reino de Dios. 26 Viña y las Ramas—Uno de las formas en que Jesús describe cómo la iglesia está unida y depende de Jesucristo. 3 10 Examen de Vocabulario a Mitad del Semestre Examen de Vocabulario al Final del Semestre No Clases el Domingo—Ultimo día de clases para los días de semana
