MEDICAL QUESTIONS

Question: Is there a right to healthcare, and what
kind of obligation do I have as a Catholic to use
my resources to help with the purchase of
medicine for my brother? His insurance won’t
cover the costs, and he’s on a fixed income. I’m
feeling guilty.
For a variety of reasons and for centuries, the
Church avoided using human right language. It
altered this course, however, in 1963 with
Blessed Pope John XXIII’s encyclical letter,
Peace on Earth. He said that people have a right
to live and a right to the “means necessary for the
proper development of life” (#11).
This text serves as a foundation for the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ speaking
of a right to “basic” and “adequate healthcare” in
their Ethical and Religious Directives for
Catholic Health Care Services. What is not clear
in Church teaching is who has the duty to ensure
that people enjoy this right. In some cases the
state has taken this responsibility, but this need
not be the case. The condition of millions of our
brothers and sisters in Christ whom we’ve never
met, however, urges us to action on their behalf.
Regarding the particular case of one’s brother,
does he have a right to the medicine and do we
have a duty to provide funds for it? This
question is difficult to answer because of the
need for more information. What is the brother’s
prognosis? Is he taking care of himself
responsibly? Does he have an ordinary or an
extraordinary obligation to take this medicine?
What do you feel capable of doing morally
without placing yourself and others in your care
at risk?
Not knowing the responses to these questions, we
would find it difficult to say “yes” or “no.”
Whatever one’s ability to respond in this case,
one’s relationship with one’s brother should be
marked by compassion and a sincere desire and
will to help in whatever way is morally
reasonable.

The focus of our reflection and weekly meeting is
both the following weekend’s readings and the
rites of the Sunday Mass. The materials for these
reflections are:

reflection booklet
A cost of $10 per person is asked for each person

EUCHARISTIC CUP
Until “cold and flu season” has passed, we will
not have the cup during the Holy Eucharist.

Pregunta: ¿Existe un derecho a la salud, y qué
tipo de obligación tengo como un católico a usar
mis recursos para ayudar con la compra de
medicinas para mi hermano? Su seguro no cubre
los costos, y él está en una renta fija. Me siento
culpable.
Por una variedad de razones, y durante siglos, la
Iglesia evitó usar el lenguaje humano. Se alteró el
curso, sin embargo, en el año 1963 con la carta
encíclica del beato Papa Juan XXIII, paz en la
tierra. Dijo que las personas tienen derecho a
vivir el derecho de los "medios necesarios para

marcada por la compasión y un sincero deseo y la
voluntad de ayudar a en la forma que es
moralmente razonable.
