PENTECOST SUNDAY CHRISTIAN FORMATION WORSHIP ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL L.I.F.E. Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –Marriage & Family Pentecost Sunday " 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in me.' He said this in reference to the Spirit." Rivers of living water. What does this image make us think of? Something active. Something dynamic and changing, yet constant and dependable. A river with living water is not stagnant; it is not silent, but rather it speaks. This river is not mucky or full of algae. This river is clear, beautiful, refreshing, and life-giving. It draws people to its banks by providing the kind of water that sustains life and the kind of scenery that is a joy to behold. Those who believe in Jesus will be like this river. Through the Spirit of Christ, which first came upon Christian believers at Pentecost and which came upon us at our baptism, we become a source of "living water." Instead of being motionless, dull, murky, unproductive people, we are strengthened by God's power to be dynamic, refreshing, and life-giving. This isn't automatic, however. We must cooperate with the Spirit that has been given to us. Those of us who have received confirmation have been sacramentally gifted with the fullness of the Spirit, but that doesn't mean that the living water is flowing at full speed. As St. Paul wrote in his second letter to Timothy, we need to "stir into flame the gift of God" (1:6). The flame may be there, but if we don't fan it through prayer, virtuous living, spiritual formation, and frequent reception of the sacraments, then it will never burst forth with the full power that it could have. But let us take heart! Even this process of "fanning" is made easier when we call upon the Holy Spirit to help us. For St. Paul reminds us today that "the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness." © Liturgical Publications Inc. Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al) The Feast of the Ascension is a significant celebration within our Church. The following are some of the key points to meditate on concerning the Ascension of Jesus. --In the Bible, a cloud is often the expression of God's power and glory, as in the book of Exodus, when a pillar of cloud guided the Jews in the desert. --Jesus' mission on earth had been accomplished. He returned to heaven, where he had come from. He took on a human body and will forever remain both God and man in his glorified state. --Earlier, Jesus had told the disciples that after he ascended, the Holy Spirit would come down upon them with power. At Pentecost, they received the Holy Spirit like tongues of fire. Today, every born-again believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, who gives wisdom and power to live the Christian life. --The command of Jesus to his followers was to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. The gospel was first spread to the Jews, then to the Jewish/mixed race Samaritans, then to the Gentiles. Christians have a responsibility to spread the good news about Jesus to all who have not heard. --The ascension of Jesus is one of the accepted doctrines of Christianity. The Apostles' Creed, Nicene Creed, and Athanasian Creed all confess that Christ ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father. --The angels warned that someday Jesus will return in his glorified body, the same way he left. But instead of idly watching for the Second Coming, we should be busy with the work Christ assigned us. ©Liturgical Publications Inc. Worship Corner Prayer of the Ascension: God our Father, make us joyful in the ascension of your Son Jesus Christ. May we follow him into the new creation, for his ascension is our glory and our hope. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen EWTN Daily rosary: 9:30pm May 19th Holy Hour (7:00pm) – Rosary and meditation Registration for 2015-2016 will be held before and after all masses the weekends of July 11-12 and 25-26 Trinity Sunday Signs of God’s love Reading I Deuteronomy 4:32–34, 39–40 (proofs of God’s love) Reading II Romans 8:14–17 (sons of God through adoption) Gospel Matthew 28:16–20 (commission of the Apostles) Key Passage Moses said to the people, “For ask now about former ages, long before your own, ever since the day that God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of heaven to the other: has anything so great as this ever happened or has its like ever been heard of?” (Deuteronomy 4:32) Adult Child What signs of God’s love have you witnessed in your life? ©Liturgical Publications Inc.
