Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 9, 2014
PASTORS COLUMN
February 10 (Monday) is the Anniversary of the Dedication of our Church. A time to remember
God’s graciousness, a time to express our gratitude for His gift. As we bring to mind the efforts, sacrifices,
dedication and commitment of many people to construct the Church, let us at the same time reflect on what a
Church really is all about. Lifting from the words of the Committee on Divine Worship of the USCCB, it
says (Guidelines #16,17):
“Just as the term Church refers to the living temple, God's People, the term church also has been
used to describe "the building in which the Christian community gathers to hear the word of God, to pray
together, to receive the sacraments, and celebrate the Eucharist." That building is both the house of God
on earth (domus Dei) and a house fit for the prayers of the saints (domus ecclesiae). Such a house of
prayer must be expressive of the presence of God and suited for the celebration of the sacrifice of Christ, as
well as reflective of the community that celebrates there.
The Church is the proper place for the liturgical prayer of the parish community, especially the
celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday. It is also the privileged place for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and reservation of the Eucharist for Communion for the sick. Whenever communities have built
houses for worship, the design of the building has been of critical importance. Churches are never "simply
gathering spaces but signify and make visible the Church living in [a particular] place, the dwelling of
God" among us, now "reconciled and united in Christ." As such, the building itself becomes "a sign of the
pilgrim Church on earth and reflects the Church dwelling in heaven." Every church building is a gathering place for the assembly, a resting place, a place of encounter with God, as well as a point of departure
on the Church's unfinished journey toward the reign of God.”

In 1858, in the grotto of Massabielle, near Lourdes in southern France, Our Lady appeared 18 times to
Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl. She revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception, asked that a
chapel be built on the site of the vision, and told the girl to drink from a fountain in the grotto. No fountain
was to be seen, but when Bernadette dug at a spot designated by the apparition,
a spring began to flow. The water from this still flowing spring has shown remarkable healing power, though it contains no curative property that science
can identify. Lourdes has become the most famous modern shrine of Our Lady.
Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is February 11.

Serra Daily Prayer for Vocations for priestly and religious vocations:
Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd
your people, Priests with hearts like your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV) When we pray for vocations for the priesthood, deaconate and religious, we actually pray for
ourselves, since holy priests, deacons and religious should result in a holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win
the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. More, by praying for vocations we are helping our children and our children's children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard.
among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)

ST. STEPHEN YOUTH MINISTRY!
“Go therefore and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations…”
This is the great Commission given by Jesus just before He
ascended into heaven. It is our Mission as Church! Our
parish community desires to form our young people into
Disciples of Christ who love Jesus and live the Gospel! It
is important to note that formation for the Sacrament of
Confirmation is only a small part of comprehensive youth
ministry! Our youth need to be engaged throughout their
high school years, not just during the two years of preparation for Confirmation. To that end, all activities offered for
Youth Ministry are for ALL High School youth regardless
of whether or not they are in the formation process for
Confirmation.

casa o en un pais extranjero y en misiónes distantes. Por tu sacerdote tentado; Por tus sacerdotes solos y solitarios; Por tus sacerdotes jóvenes;
