Sixth Sunday of Easter

Pastor’s Corner
May: Month of Mary
The month of May is the "month which the piety of the faithful
has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady," and it is the occasion
for a "moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of
the world pay to the Queen of Heaven. During this month, Christians,
both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from
their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to
us from her throne in greater abundance"
This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the
Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. In this way, the
Church was able to Christianize the secular feasts which were wont to
take place at that time. The practice dates back at least 700 years and is
still observed around the world today. May is seen as the beginning of
new life and the start of summer, which makes this a logical time for
the celebrations of Mary, who brought life into the world.
The practice became especially popular among the members of
the Jesuit Order — by 1700 it took hold among their students at the
Roman College and a bit later it was publicly practiced in the Gesu
Church in Rome. From there it spread to the whole Church. The practice was granted a partial indulgence by Pius
VII in 1815 and a plenary indulgence by Pius IX in 1859.
The pious practice of honoring Mary during the month of May has been especially recommended by the
Popes. Pius XII made frequent reference to it and in his great Encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy (Mediator Dei) characterized it as one of "other exercises of piety which although not strictly belonging to the Sacred Liturgy, are nevertheless of special import and dignity, and may be considered in a certain way to be an addition to the liturgical cult:
they have been approved and praised over and over again by the Apostolic See and by the Bishops." Paul VI wrote
a short encyclical in 1965 using the Month of Mary devotion as a means of obtaining prayers for peace. He urged the
faithful to make use of this practice which is "gladdening and consoling" and by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is
honored and the Christian people are enriched with spiritual gifts." In May of 2002 Pope St. John Paul II said,
"Today we begin the month dedicated to Our Lady a favorite of popular devotion. In accord with a long-standing
tradition of devotion, parishes and families continue to make the month of May a 'Marian' month, celebrating it with
many devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives!"
The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and
inspiration, of everyone who, in and through the Church, seeks to be the servant of God and man and the obedient
agent of the promptings of the Holy Spirit. In May there are a number of wonderful feast days including the Anniversary of Fatima (May 13) and the Feast of the Queenship of Mary (May 31) according to the 1962 calendar. According to the 1969 Calendar, May 31 is the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Serra Daily Prayer for priestly and religious vocations:
Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your people, Priests with hearts like
your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12,
13, NIV) When we pray for vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and religious, we actually pray for ourselves, since holy priests, deacons and religious should result in a
holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. By praying for vocations we are helping our children and our children's children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard
among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)

You taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us
your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being
enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness
only in created things; made Peter weep after his
betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan
woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above
all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen
and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that
they may feel compassion for those in
ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send Your Spirit And Consecrate Every One Of Us With Its Anointing. So The
Jubilee of Mercy May Be A Year Of Grace From The Lord. And Your Church.
With Renewed Enthusiasm, May We Bring Your Good News To The Poor. Proclaim Liberty To Captives And The Oppressed, And Restore Sight To The Blind.
We Ask This Through The Intercession Of Mary, o Mercy, and You who lives and reigns
with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever Amen.

con amor a esta porción de tu viña. Bendice la Diócesis de San Diego Bendito sea el Señor, porque él ha escuchado el sonido de mi escrito: "el Señor es mi fortaleza y mi escudo. En él confía en mi corazón, y encontrar ayuda; a continuación, mi corazón exultante y con mi hijo le doy fuerza mi escudo . En él confía en mi corazón, y encontrar ayuda;

adúltera y a la Magdalena del buscar la felicidad solamente en una creatura;
