LA SEDE DEL PRESIDENTE

En el altar, Cristo Sacerdote se nos da en alimento; en el ambón, Cristo Maestro nos explica la Palabra, y en la sede, Cristo Guía a su comunidad. Hay que recordar que el área
donde se encuentra el altar, el ambón y la sede se llama “presbiterio”, es decir el lugar
reservado para los ministros sagrados (obispo, presbítero y diácono). La “silla presidencial” no es la silla del presidente de un país, sino el lugar donde se sienta el sacerdote
que preside la Misa. Por eso se llama “sede del presidente”, porque es él quien preside.
Recordemos que el sacerdote es el signo sacramental de Cristo Jesús, pues al celebrar los
sacramentos actúa in persona Christi, en persona de Cristo.

THE SEAT OF THE PRESIDER

The altar, the ambo and the seat of the presider are important because in the altar Christ
the Priest gives himself to us as food; in the ambo, Christ the Word becomes present; in
the ambo Christ the Teacher explains to us the Word of God. In the seat, Christ guides
and leads his community. The area where the altar, the ambo and the seat of the presider in the Catholic Church is called the “sanctuary,” or “presbytery” − It comes from
“presbyter”, meaning “priest”. It’s named this because it is an area reserved for the sacred
ministers (the bishop, the priest and the deacon). From the chair, the priest presides
over the Mass. We have to remember that the priest is the “sacramental sign of Jesus
Christ,” because during the celebration of the sacraments he acts in persona Christi, in
the person of Christ.
Until 1965, there were three chairs in the sanctuary because in the solemn Mass in
Latin, the priest was accompanied by the deacon and sub-deacon. Also, the three chairs
were on the right side facing the altar. The priest, deacon and sub-deacon would “sit”
down when the Gloria or the Credo were sung by the choir. The chair of the Bishop is
called “cathedra”, and in some churches, is located to the left, looking at the sanctuary.
This cathedra is more prominent to emphasize the role of the Bishop and his functions
to teach, sanctify and govern the holy people of God entrusted to his care.
A good example is the seat of the Bishop in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
in Savannah, Georgia. After the Second Vatican Council, the seat of the priest is only
one, because he presides over and leads the prayer in persona Christi. There may be two

El sábado 11 de junio de 2016 la Oficina de Pastoral Familiar
ofreció un taller para mujeres titulado “Taller de mujer a mujer: Reflexión, vida, esperanza y fe en Dios” en la iglesia San
José Obrero en Bainbridge, GA. Maria Ramos-Hibbs, directora de la oficina, presentó varios temas con el fin de ayudar
a las participantes a entender cómo la autoestima se relaciona
con el amor de Dios. El propósito de este taller es motivar
a las mujeres a continuar aprendiendo sobre las enseñanzas
de la iglesia y cómo estas se relacionan con la vida familiar.
La iglesia de San José Obrero fue muy generosa no solo con
su hospitalidad sino también proporcionando los almuerzos
de ese día. Se contó con aproximadamente 30 participantes
quienes expresaron su gratitud por la oportunidad de aprender sobre estrategias de autocontrol.

ENTRENAMIENTO SOBRE
PLANIFICACIÓN FAMILIAR
NATURAL EN ESPAÑOL

El 18 de junio de 2016 fue un día dedicado a la educación de
parejas. Fue una jornada sobre Planificación Familiar Natural (PFN) y el Significado de la Sexualidad Humana, el cual
se llevó a cabo en la Iglesia de Santa Teresa de Ávila. Por la
mañana las parejas escucharon a los esposos David y Marcela
Medina, instructores de Planificación Natural Familiar de
la Diócesis de San Agustín, Florida. Discutieron los efectos
negativos de la anticoncepción y cómo esta va en contra de las
enseñanzas católicas. También explicaron el método “Billings”
con detalle. Por la tarde, el Dr. Carlos F. Zayas, Profesor de
Medicina y Cirugía, dio una presentación sobre “El significado de la sexualidad humana”. El doctor explicó en detalle las
enseñanzas de la iglesia católica y su relación con la sexualidad
humana. Las parejas que asistieron eran miembros de la iglesia

WORKSHOP FOR
WOMEN IN SPANISH

On Saturday, June 11, 2016 the Office of Family Life offered
a workshop in Spanish for women entitled “Workshop
from Woman to Woman: Life, Hope and Faith in God” at
St. Joseph the Worker Church, in Bainbridge, GA. Maria G.
Ramos-Hibbs, Director of the Office of Family Life, presented some topics in order to help participants to understand
how self-esteem relates to the love of God. The purpose of
the workshop was to encourage women to continue learning
about the teachings of the church as it relates to family life.
St. Joseph the Worker Church was generous enough to host
and sponsor the meals for the workshop. There were approximately 30 participants, who expressed their gratitude for the
opportunity to learn about self-management strategies. It will
help their children and their families.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING
WORKSHOP IN SPANISH

June 18, 2016 was an educational day for couples at St.
Theresa of Avila. They attended a workshop in Spanish about
Natural Family Planning (NFP), and the Meaning of Human
Sexuality in Spanish. In the morning the couples listened to
David and Marcela Medina, NFP Instructors from the Diocese of Saint Augustine. They discussed the harmful effects
of contraception and how it goes against Catholic teachings.
They also explained the Billings Method in detail. In the
afternoon, Dr. Carlos F. Zayas, MD, FACP, FASN, FAST,

of Avila, Grovetown attended the event. St. Theresa of Avila
parish hosted this workshop. It was sponsored by the Office
of Family Life.
NUEVO PROGRAMA DE
FORMACIÓN: ESCUELA
CATEQUÉTICA DIOCESANA
La Diócesis de Savannah anuncia con alegría la creación de la
nueva Escuela Catequética en español, que llevará el nombre
de uno de los Mártires de Georgia: Fray Pedro de Corpa. La
escuela ofrecerá 15 cursos catequéticos durante un período de
tres años. Las personas tendrán la opción de tomar un curso o
más. Para obtener el “Certificado en formación catequética” de
la Diócesis de Savannah se deberá asistir a los quince cursos.
Todo el proceso de registro y promoción de la escuela se realizará en cada parroquia participante. Las clases comenzarán
en agosto, en diez centros de formación ubicados en diferentes

NEW FORMATION PROGRAM:
DIOCESAN CATECHETICAL
SCHOOL IN SPANISH
The Diocese of Savannah is happy to announce the creation of
a new Catechetical school in Spanish, named after one of the
future Georgia Martyrs: Fray Pedro de Corpa. The school will
offer 15 catechetical courses over a three year period. People
who are interested can choose one or more courses. To obtain
the “Certificate of Catechetical Formation” from the Diocese of
Savannah, the student must attend 15 courses. The classes will
start in August at 10 “formation centers” located in different
parts of the Diocese. In the future we hope to reach every parish,
for the moment it will offered only in 10 churches. For more
information or to know if your parish is participating in this
program, contact your local catholic church. We thank Catholic Extension and the Diocese of Charleston for their generosity
to launch this new school of formation.

Hasta antes de 1965 había tres sillas porque en las misas
solemnes en latín, el sacerdote iba acompañado del diácono
y subdiácono. Además, las tres sedes estaban de lado derecho
mirando hacia el altar. El sacerdote, el diácono y subdiácono
iban a las sedes “a sentarse”, por ejemplo cuando el Gloria o
el Credo eran cantados por el coro. Había un caso en donde
la sede del presidente estaba ubicada del lado izquierdo
del altar: la cátedra del Obispo. En las Iglesias catedrales
se puede observar una silla prominente que a veces tiene
un baldaquino. Desde ahí el obispo cumple sus funciones
de enseñar, gobernar y santificar al pueblo de Dios bajo su
cuidado. Un ejemplo es la sede del obispo en la catedral
de san Juan Bautista en Savannah, Georgia. Después de la
reforma conciliar, la sede del sacerdote es una sola porque él,
en persona de Cristo, preside y dirige la oración. Puede haber
dos sillas menores para los dos diáconos que acompañen al
sacerdote pero debe distinguirse claramente su diferencia,
para indicar el rango jerárquico. ¿Dónde se debe ubicar la
silla presidencial? Dice la Instrucción General del Misal
Romano (IGMR, es decir las reglas litúrgicas obligatorias que
se deben observar cuidadosamente) que la sede del sacerdote
celebrante debe significar su ministerio de presidente de la
asamblea y de moderador de la oración, por ello el lugar más
adecuado es vuelto hacia el pueblo, al fondo del presbiterio.
Pero la IGMR añade: “a no ser que la estructura del edificio
u otra circunstancia lo impidan, por ejemplo, si por la gran
distancia se torna difícil la comunicación entre el sacerdote
y la asamblea congregada, o si el sagrario está situado en la
mitad, detrás del altar”. En esos casos la sede se puede colocar
del lado derecho o izquierdo del altar. Lo importante es que
sea visible y que forma una estructura armónica con el altar y
con el ambón. Ojo: armonía arquitectónica y litúrgica.
La próxima vez que vaya a su Iglesia, fíjese en la sede
presidencial. ¿Dónde está colocada? ¿De qué lado del altar?

smaller chairs for the two deacons, who assist the priest, but
they should be different in order to indicate their hierarchical difference. Where should the chair of the presider be
located? According to the General Instruction of the Roman
Missal (GIRM, the liturgical rules, which must be observed
carefully), the seat of the celebrant must signify his ministry
as presider of the assembly and moderator of the prayer. The
GIRM adds that the most appropriate place for the seat is facing the people, at the end of the sanctuary. But it adds: “Thus
the more suitable place for the chair is facing the people at
the head of the sanctuary, unless the design of the building
or other features prevent this: as, for example, if on account
of too great a distance, communication between the Priest
and the congregation would be difficult, or if the tabernacle
were to be positioned in the center behind the altar.” The
important thing is that it has to be visible and it has to form a
harmonic structure with the altar and the ambo.
The next time that you enter your church, look at the seat
of the priest. Where is it placed? Which side of the altar?

MOVIMIENTO JUAN XXIII
A finales de mayo se llevó a cabo en Lizella, Georgia, el retiro
número 54 de hombres. El evento contó con un total de 51
participantes. Además, el 18 de junio cerca de 200 personas

Roberta, Georgia.

Lizella, Ga., with a total of 51 participants. Family day for the
John XXIII movement was celebrated on June 18 at the Eunice field in Roberta, Ga., with an attendance of 200 people.
