LA FUENTE BAUTISMAL

El Bautismo es el sacramento de entrada a la comunidad católica. El itinerario de fe empieza en la fuente bautismal y por ello se coloca al ingreso o cerca de este en una Iglesia.
La pila bautismal simboliza nuestra entrada en la vida católica, en la vida de la fe. En los
primeros siglos, esta fuente bautismal era una verdadera piscina pues todos los que iban
a recibir el sacramento eran sumergidos completamente para significar de esa forma el
baño de regeneración total que conlleva el bautismo. Morimos al pecado y renacemos
a la gracia. Así nos lo describe san Cirilo de Jerusalén en sus catequesis bautismales.
En los primeros siglos, a partir de que el cristianismo fue aceptado por Constantino,
se empezaron a construir baptisterios, es decir edificios octagonales ubicados enfrente
o a un costado de la iglesia catedral, dentro de los cuales se ubicaba una enorme pila
bautismal. Uno de los más conocidos es el Baptisterio de san Juan Bautista en la Ciudad
de Florencia, Italia, realizado en el siglo V. Más tarde, a partir del siglo XVI comienzan
a construirse capillas bautismales dentro de las Iglesias, cerca de la entrada. Algunos

BAPTISMAL FONT

Baptism is the sacrament of entrance into the Catholic community. The itinerary of
faith starts in the baptismal font, which is why it is placed at the entrance of the Church,
or near to it. The baptismal font symbolizes our entrance into Catholic life — into the
life of faith. In the first centuries, they used a large font caved into the floor, like a cistern with steps. Those who received the sacrament were immersed totally into the water
to symbolize their regeneration as new creatures. We died in sin and were reborn into

PREPARACIÓN MATRIMONIAL

En el mes de julio tuvo lugar en la Iglesia de St. John en Valdosta, GA, la reunión del primer grupo de facilitadores para los
cursos de preparación pre-matrimonial titulados: “Pre-Caná” y
“Serán los dos uno solo”. Dichas clases están certificadas por la
Diócesis de Savannah y son dirigidas por María Ramos, Directora de la Oficina de Familias. El grupo está conformado por
ocho parejas cuya función consiste en preparar a las parejas
que van a recibir el sacramento del matrimonio.
FIRST MEETING OF FACILITATORS
FOR MARRIAGE PREPARATION

The first meeting of facilitators for marriage preparation classes took place in the church of St. John in Valdosta. The classes
called “Pre-Cana” and “You will be one” are certified by the Diocese of Savannah and are directed by Maria Ramos, Director
of the Family Office of the Diocese of Savannah. The group in
Valdosta is composed of eight couples, who will prepare other
couples to receive the sacrament of marriage.

El domingo 24 de julio se realizó en la Iglesia de San Antonio
de Padua en Ray City, GA, el primer encuentro regional de
parejas. Al evento asistieron 48 parejas provenientes de Valdosta, Lake Park, Adel, Lakeland, Bainbridge, Cairo, Thomasville, y Ray City. Durante la sesión los padres: Fredy Angel
y Víctor Canela S. T. , ofrecieron pláticas enfocadas en las
fortalezas y debilidades de las parejas. Se habló de lo que las
une y lo que las separa, considerando la realidad del mundo y
el ambiente en el que viven las parejas hoy en día. Más tarde,
se llevó a cabo la adoración frente al Santísimo y la renovación de compromisos matrimoniales, lo cual estuvo a cargo
del padre Oscar Mendoza. Este encuentro fue una oportunidad para que las parejas renovaran su amor y compromiso
para seguir caminando juntos de la mano de Dios con una
vida de fe y testimonio. Este primer retiro forma parte de una
serie de encuentros que se seguirán desarrollando cada dos o
tres meses dentro del esquema de un programa piloto que se
evaluará a nivel regional. Su objetivo es mejorar la calidad de
vida y el bienestar de las parejas en nuestras comunidades.
On Sunday, July 24, San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church
in Ray City, Georgia, hosted the first regional encounter
for couples. A total of 48 couples attended from Valdosta,
Lake Park, Adel, Lakeland, Bainbridge, Cairo, Thomasville,
and Ray City. The main presenters were Father Fredy Angel
and Father Victor Canela S.T. The talks were focused on the
strengths and weaknesses of couples. The group reflected on
what unites and what separates them, considering the reality
of the world and the environment in which couples live today. Later the couples had adoration time, led by Father Oscar Mendoza. Praying before the Blessed Sacrament, they had
the opportunity to renew their marriage vows. The encounter
was an opportunity for couples to renew their love and commitment to each other, and continue walking together with
God. This encounter is part of a pilot project that hopes to
expand, offering more regional opportunities such as this one
in the future. The main purpose is to improve the quality of
life and well-being of couples in our communities.

El sábado 25 de junio, diecisiete candidatos recibieron el entrenamiento y la certificación para ofrecer el programa VIRTUS en la Diócesis de Savannah. Corina Florez, facilitadora
de VIRTUS, perteneciente a la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón
en Vidalia, GA, condujo el programa en español. Otro grupo
también recibió la capacitación en inglés. A la fecha nuestra
diócesis cuenta con un total de 105 facilitadores de VIRTUS
activos; 31 de ellos ofrecen el entrenamiento en español.
Ahora, con este nuevo grupo, cada decanato cuenta con al
menos dos facilitadores que ofrecen la clase en español.
Cada año, durante la primavera, la Oficina para la Protección
de Niños y Jóvenes contacta a los párrocos y directores de
escuela para que nominen a personas para ser facilitadores de
VIRTUS. La formación se realiza un día y cada año se ofrece
en un área diferente de la Diócesis. Si usted está interesado en
este ministerio por favor hable con su párroco o director de
escuela y comente su interés de ser facilitador de VIRTUS.
On Saturday, June 25, 17 candidates were certified to facilitate
VIRTUS training in the Diocese of Savannah. VIRTUS is the
brand name that identifies best practices programs designed
to help prevent wrongdoing and promote “right doing” within religious organizations. VIRTUS Facilitator Trainer Corina
Florez from Sacred Heart Church in Vidalia, Georgia, led
the Spanish track language. Another group was also trained
in English. Right now, there are total of 105 active VIRTUS
facilitators in our diocese; thirty-one of them only for the
Spanish track. With this new group, each deanery has at least
two facilitators who offer the training in Spanish.
Each year, during spring, the Office for the Protection of
Children and Young People reach out to Pastors and School
Principals to submit names of individuals who would be
willing and able to become VIRTUS Facilitators. The training
takes one day. Every year it is offered in a different area of
the Diocese. If you are interested in this ministry, please talk
about it with your pastor or school principal.

The dates for the Hispanic Ministry meetings have changed,
in the next weeks we will provide more information about
the new dates and location for the meetings. During these
meetings, we will talk about the Hispanic Ministry Initiative,
as well as the “V National Encuentro on Hispanic Ministry.”

El programa piloto de la Escuela Catequética en español
Fray Pedro de Cora inició el 9 de Agosto. Esta primera
sesión contó con la participación de más de 240 estudiantes. La escuela ofrece cursos de formación cortos sobre
diversos temas de nuestra fe. Actualmente se imparte en
10 Centros de Formación localizados en diferentes partes
de la diócesis. En un futuro la escuela espera ofrecer estos
cursos en DVD, para que más parroquias se beneficien de
este nuevo recurso educativo. En los próximos días se dará
a conocer en nuestra página de Internet más información
sobre la escuela y sus ubicaciones.
CATECHETICAL
SCHOOL IN SPANISH
The pilot program of the Catechetical School in
Spanish, Fray Pedro de Corpa, started on August
9. More than 240 people took part in it. The school
offers short courses on different topics of the faith. It
is offered in 10 formation centers located around the
Diocese. In the near future, the school hopes to offer
these courses on DVD so that more parishes can benefit
from this new educational resource. More information
about the school and all the locations will be posted on
our website in the next days.

Dentro de esas capillas se encuentran fuentes bautismales
que son verdaderas piezas artísticas. Como vemos, estas construcciones siempre se ubicaron cerca de la entrada de la Iglesia para simbolizar físicamente lo que representaban. Cada
símbolo se inserta dentro de su propio espacio litúrgico y la
fuente bautismal es una aplicación concreta de ello. Después
del Concilio Vaticano II, algunas conferencias episcopales,
como la norteamericana o la italiana sugirieron colocar la
pila bautismal en la entrada, en un lugar cercano a esta, o en
una capilla próxima al ingreso de la Iglesia.
La fuente bautismal tiene un rol importante en nuestras vidas. Cada vez que entramos a una Iglesia nos santiguamos con
el agua bendita que emana de esa fuente. Ese signo representa
el recuerdo de nuestro bautismo, momento en el que fuimos
sumergidos con Cristo para participar en su muerte y resurrección. Ese día fuimos hechos nuevas creaturas: hijos de Dios
y coherederos de su Reino. Si asistimos a Misa convocados
por Cristo para participar en el banquete eucarístico, fue por
nuestra incorporación a la comunidad católica por medio del
bautismo. Cada vez que entremos en una Iglesia y usemos el
agua bendita de la fuente bautismal, debemos estar conscientes
de la importancia que este primer sacramento de la iniciación
cristiana trajo a nuestras vidas. Después de su nacimiento,
el bautismo debe ser una de las fechas más importantes para
recordar. ¿Cuándo y dónde fue el día de su bautismo?
God’s grace. This is how St. Cyril of Jerusalem describes the
ritual in one of his baptismal catechesis. After Christianity
was accepted by Emperor Constantine, they erected buildings
to impart this sacrament. Such baptisteries were located in
front, or near, the Cathedral. One of the most popular is the
Baptistery of St. John the Baptist in Florence, Italy, made in
the 5th Century. From the 16th century on, they built baptismal chapels inside the churches. Some examples of these
are the Chapel of Baptism in St. Peter Basilica in the Vatican,
or the one in St. Mary Major. The baptismal fonts located in
those chapels are truly artistic masterpieces. After the Second
Vatican Council, some episcopal conferences, such as the
American or the Italian, emphasized the importance of placing the baptismal font at the entrance, or close to it.
The baptismal font has an important role in our lives.
Every time that we enter into the church, we use holy water
from the font to make the sign of the cross. This action
symbolizes a remembrance of our baptism — the moment
when we were immersed into Christ’s death and resurrection.
The day in which we were made new creatures, children of
God and coheirs of the Kingdom. We attend Mass because
we were convoked by Christ to take part in the Eucharistic
banquet, and we can do so because of our baptism. Each time
that we go to Church and use holy water, we need to remember the importance of the sacrament of baptism in our lives.
After your birthday, baptism is one of the most important

SOBRE LA PALABRA DE DIOS

El miércoles 13 de julio se llevó a cabo en la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes
en Columbus, GA un taller sobre meditación de la Palabra de Dios por medio de la
oración y la alabanza. El evento contó con la presencia de la psicóloga y cantante colombiana Paola Garzón, quien compartió su testimonio con la comunidad. En su alocución
la doctora invitó a vivir la presencia de Dios en cada momento de la vida y recordó a la
comunidad que “a pesar de la pruebas y las dificultades, Dios siempre nos acompaña,
pues al final de la tormenta llega la calma y la paz que solo Dios es capaz de darnos”.
A meditation workshop on the
Word of God took place in the
parish of Our Lady of Lourdes,
in Columbus, GA. During the
event, Paola Garzón, a Colombian
psychologist and singer, shared
her testimony with the community. During her talk, she invited
attendants to live in the presence
of God each moment of their lives.
She also reminded them that, “in
spite of trials and tribulations of
life, God is always with us; at the
end of the storm there is peace and
calm, which only God can give.”
