Year of Mercy
Jesus said, “A man fell victim to robbers as he
went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They
stripped and beat him and went off leaving him
half-dead. A priest happened to be going down
that road, but when he saw him, he passed by
on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came
to the place, and when he saw him, he passed
by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan
traveler who came upon him was moved with
compassion at the sight. He approached the
victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds
and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on
his own animal, took him to an inn and cared
for him. The next day he took out two silver
coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the
instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more
than what I have given you, I shall repay you on
my way back.
Jesus said to him, “Which of these three,
in you opionion, was the neighbor to the
robbers’ victim?” He answered, “The one
who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to
him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:30-37)
The motto Merciful Like the Father
(taken from the Gospel of Luke,
6:36) serves as an invitation to
follow the merciful example of the
Father who asks us not to judge
or condemn but to forgive and to
give love and forgiveness without
measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38).

Campaign
These familiar lines from the end of the Good
Samaritan story in Luke’s Gospel remind us of
Jesus’ command: “Go and do likewise.” In this
Holy Year of Mercy, the Catholic Stewardship
(CSA) appeal gives us all the chance to engage
in the works of mercy.
Pope Francis has asked us to focus on the
Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Within
our local Church, the ministries funded by
CSA seek to enact these works of mercy. The
overall goal of the CSA campaign this year is
$2,450,000. Each parish, based on their income,
shares in completing this goal. The funds are
distributed to support these ministries.
Teach the uneducated and assure the
doubtful $1,129,625
51% for Formation of Seminary students who
will become future priests and Continuing
Education of Priests and Deacons.
24% for Office of Faith Formation for
catechetical ministry, youth ministry and adult
learning.
12.5% for Catholic School Superintendent
Office to oversee our Catholic School System.
12.5% for Social Action and Life Issues,
Natural Family Planning.
This is the largest share of the CSA budget.
With it we are able to form people of all ages in
the faith and to continue to educate the wider
culture about Catholic values.
Care for the homeless, the sick, the prisoner
and the dead $534,826
100% Care for our retired priests and priests
with illness.
Those who have given their lives to ordained
ministry in the Church need our support in
their retirement. With these funds we provide
health insurance and assistance to those who
are retired and assist priests who have not yet
retired who have needs.
Give food, drink and clothing $282,340
53% for Catholic Charities.
the Campus Ministry program at UNLV.
Students cannot themselves fund the
presence of the Church on campus, so
these funds assist in that goal. Our elders
and ill who cannot attend church stay
connected to the faith through the weekly
televised Mass.
Caution sinners, bear wrongs, and
forgive $72,495
100% Rural parish assistance.
It is often easy to forget that the Diocese of
Las Vegas is responsible for the ongoing
development of the faith in small rural
communities that cannot fully support their
own parish. Many of the rural Nevadans live
a distance from the nearest Church. These
funds help us keep the Catholic faith as a
vital part of small towns in our diocese.
After several years with no increase in
CSA’s overall goal, we have had to increase
the goal this year. We rely on your help to
be able to provide these works of mercy and
ministry in our local Church. Thank you for
your help in making mercy known in this
Holy Year. With all your help we will extend
Christ’s mercy to all in our diocese.

In its 75th year of helping people in the Las
Vegas valley, Catholic Charities helps to resettle
and enculturate those who arrive in our valley
legally. The St. Therese Center provides
assistance to those affected by HIV and AIDS.

El lema Misericordioso como el
Padre (tomado del Evangelio de
Lucas, 6:36) es una invitación a
seguir el ejemplo de la misericordia
del Padre que nos pide no juzgar o
condenar sino perdonar, amar y dar
perdón sin medida. (cfr. Lc 6:37-38).

Jesús le dijo: “Cierto hombre bajaba de
Jerusalén a Jericó, y cayó en manos de
bandidos, los cuales después de despojarlo y
golpearlo, se fueron, dejándolo medio muerto.
Por casualidad cierto sacerdote bajaba por
aquel camino, y cuando lo vio, pasó por el otro
lado del camino. Del mismo modo, también un
Levita, cuando llegó al lugar y lo vio, pasó por
el otro lado del camino. Pero cierto Samaritano,
que iba de viaje, llegó adonde él estaba; y
cuando lo vio, tuvo compasión. Acercándose,
le vendó sus heridas, derramando aceite y
vino sobre ellas; y poniéndolo sobre su propia
cabalgadura, lo llevó a un mesón y lo cuidó. Al
día siguiente, sacando dos denarios de plata
se los dio al mesonero, y dijo: ‘Cuídelo, y todo
lo demás que gaste, cuando yo regrese se lo
pagaré.’
Preguntó Jesús, ¿Cuál de los tres piensas tú
que demostró ser prójimo del que fue víctima
de los bandidos?” El respondió: “El que tuvo
misericordia de él.” Dijo Jesús, “Ve y haz tú
lo mismo.” (Lucas 10:30-37)
Estas últimas líneas al final de la historia del
Buen Samaritano en el evangelio de Lucas nos
recuerdan el mandato de Jesús: “Ve y haz tú lo
mismo.” En este Año Santo de la Misericordia,
la Campaña del Diezmo (CSA) nos da a todos
la oportunidad de participar en las obras de
misericordia.
El Papa Francisco nos ha pedido enfocarnos
en las Obras de Misericordia corporales y
espirituales. Dentro de nuestra Iglesia local,
los ministerios financiados por el CSA buscan
realizar las obras de misericordia. La meta
total de la Campaña del Diezmo CSA este año
es $2,450,000. Cada parroquia, según sus
ingresos, es responsable de ayudarnos a llegar
a esta meta. Los fondos son distribuidos para
apoyar estos ministerios:
Enseñar al que no sabe y animar al que duda

y diáconos.
24% Oficina de formación de la Fe: Catequesis,
Pastoral Juvenil y formación de adultos.

Esta es la porción más grande del presupuesto
del CSA. Con estos fondos formamos en la
fe a gente de todas las edades y continuamos
educando la cultura y la sociedad en valores
católicos.

jubilados y enfermos
Todos los que han dado su vida en el ministerio
sacerdotal en la Iglesia necesitan nuestro
apoyo durante su jubilación. Con estos fondos
proveemos seguro de salud y asistencia a los
sacerdotes jubilados y asistimos a sacerdotes
aun no jubilados con necesidades especiales.

En sus 75 años ayudando a la gente en el valle
de Las Vegas, Caridades Católicas ayuda a
establecerse y aculturarse a aquellos que llegan
aquí legalmente. El Centro Santa Teresa provee
asistencia a las personas afectadas por el VIH y
el SIDA.
la Iglesia en el campo universitario, por eso
los fondos que proveemos consiguen esa
meta. Nuestros ancianos y enfermos que
no pueden ir a la Iglesia pueden permanecer
conectados en la fe a través de la Misa
semanal por televisión.
Amonestar a los pecadores, soportar
injurias, y perdonar $72,495
100% Asistencia a parroquias rurales
Es facil olvidarnos que la Diócesis de
Las Vegas es responsable por mantener
y desarrollar la fe en las pequeñas
comunidades rurales que no pueden
totalmente financiar sus propias parroquias.
Muchas personas en Nevada viven a
grandes distancias de la Iglesia más cercana.
Estos fondos nos ayudan a mantener la
fe como parte vital de las poblaciones
pequeñas en nuestra diócesis.
Después de varios años en que no ha habido
un incremento de la meta total del Diezmo,
hemos tenido que aumentar la meta de este
año. Confiamos en su apoyo para poder
proveer en nuestra Iglesia local estas obras
de misericordia y ministerios. Gracias por
ayudarnos en hacer conocer la misericordia
en este Año Santo. Con su ayuda
extenderemos la misericordia de Cristo en
toda nuestra diócesis.
