MISSION STATEMENT
We, the people of St. John XXIII, are a multi-ethnic Roman Catholic
parish (founded on July 1, 2006) formed from the union of the Church
of the Resurrection, Fontana and the parish of St. Thomas More, Rialto. We seek to nourish the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all families and
people, so that they can rejoice in the love of God in this life and in the
life to come. We endeavor to do this by fostering: an authentic Christian Stewardship, the Christian education of our youth and adults
through Resurrection Academy and other programs,
outreach to the
poor and needy, and the celebration of the sacraments, especially the
Holy Eucharist.

MISIÓN PARROQUIAL
Nosotros, los feligreses de San Juan XXIII, somos una
parroquia Católica Romana multiétnica (fundada el 1de julio del 2006)
formada por la unión de la Iglesia de la Resurrección en Fontana y la
parroquia de Santo Tomas Moro en Rialto. Procuramos alimentar el
Evangelio de Jesucristo en todas las familias y en todas personas, para
que puedan regocijarse en el amor de Dios durante ésta vida y en la
vida por venir. Procuramos realizar esto fomentando: una autentica

RECOGNIZING JESUS
St. Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we
hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second,
part of his first Letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman
who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what
he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had said now makes
sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our
faith and hope can be centered on God.
Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused,
the two don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard
Peter say above: all this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In
the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize
him—in the breaking of the bread.
RECONOZCAN A JESÚS
San Pedro nos habla dos veces hoy. En la primera lectura,
escuchamos una parte de su sermón el día de Pentecostés; en la
segunda, parte de su primera carta. Antes, un pescador asustado
y sin mucha educación que a menudo decía lo que no debía,
ahora dice lo que él sabe es la verdad. Todo lo que Jesús había
dicho ahora tiene sentido. Su muerte y resurrección eran parte
del plan de Dios y nuestra fe y esperanza se pueden centrar en
Dios.
El Evangelio de hoy nos relata la historia de la caminata de
Jesús hacia Emaús con dos de los discípulos. Asustados, tristes
y confusos, ninguno de los dos reconoció a Jesús, quien les dice
lo mismo que escuchamos de Pedro en la lectura anterior: todo
eso sucedió como parte del plan de Dios. Al final, los discípulos
reconocieron a Jesús por la misma acción que nosotros debemos
reconocerlo— al partir el Pan.

When Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (now St.
John XXIII) was elected to succeed the deceased
Pope Pius XII on October 28, 1958, most people
believed that he was not going to stay long in office
because he was 76 years old. Some also saw his election as another way of perpetuating the conservatism of the Church. But three months after his election, he called for the world’s Catholic bishops to
gather for the Second Vatican Council to chart the
church’s future in the post-World War II era.
According to him, “the Council would serve to throw
open the windows of the church and let the fresh air
of the Spirit blow through.”
In October 1962, more than 2,000 bishops began
complex deliberations that concluded in 1965.
During that time, many ecclesiastical reforms were
debated, non-more important than the Catholic
Church’s often negative and turbulent relations with
Jews and Judaism. This time there was a longstanding pathologies of anti-Judaism and antisemitism embedded in the hearts and minds of
many people throughout history. This did not only
cause Jews their reputations but also their lives and
properties
Pope John XXIII set out to confront the scientific
and intellectual revolutions of the 20th century, the
legacy of two world wars, Communism, fascism, and
Nazism, and especially the horrific genocidal Holocaust. He wanted Catholics to face up to the dismal
history and make changes to the negative way Jews
and Judaism were understood. He wanted the
Church to officially change its teaching, preaching,
liturgy and beliefs about Jews and Judaism.

What St. John XXIII began by calling for the Vatican
II Council brought an end to anti-Judaism and antiSemitism within the Catholic Church. In fact, it was
his leadership – followed by that of his successor,
Paul VI – that inspired Catholic clergy and laity to
work together to achieve purposeful change throughout the church. This rare achievement of St. John
XXIII will forever be a permanent and positive chapter of Jewish history. Our patron saint will continue
this work of reconciliation, unity and love with each
one of us. Therefore, let each one of us, after the
manner of this great accomplishment tries his or her
best to recognize the lonely, forgotten, abandoned
and those discriminated against and show them love.

help assemble rose bouquets for our church’s
Mother’s Day Rose Project. These beautiful
bouquets will be sold to help moms, dads,
and babies in need. Just a few hours of your
time on Saturday, May 10th between 9am
and 12pm will help provide the resources
needed to save lives. The rose bouquets will be assembled at St.

The Mass Celebration commemorating the canonization of
St. John XXIII will be on May 17, 2014, 6:00PM at the
Fontana Center. There will be no other evening masses in
both Fontana and Rialto on this date. The Main Celebrant
is Bishop Gerald Barnes and concelebrated by our own
priests. Fellowship follows after the mass. Each parish
ministry is requested to bring a main dish to share. Also,
each family is requested to bring a desert plate/tray to
share. T-shirts commemorating the event will be available

La Misa de Celebración conmemorando la canonización de
San Juan XXIII sera el 17 de Mayo 2014, a las 6PM en
Fontana. No habra otras misas por la tarde en Fontana ni
en Rialto en este dia. El celebrante principal sera el Obispo
Gerald Barnes y concelebrada por nuestros actuales sacerdotes. Un convivio seguira despues de la misa. A cada
ministerio se le pide que traigan un platillo de comida.
También, a cada familia se le pide que traigan un postre
para compartir. Tendremos camisetas a la venta durante
esta conmemoracion. Porfavor llame a Vicki Dela Cruz al

June 1, 2014 from 9am to 2pm for grades 1-8.
