Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Rector
Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R.
I recently read a book entitled: Living the Call: An Introduction
to the Lay Vocation written by Michael Novak and William Simon
Jr. As the title implies, the book speaks of the role of the laity in
the Church. The Second Vatican Council taught us that we are all
equal members of the Body of Christ, the People of God and each
of us has an important role to play in building up the community
and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As the numbers of priests and vowed religious has grown smaller and smaller, it has become clear that laity must now assume
many of the functions as well as roles formerly done by priests and religious. In their
book, the authors quote Pope Benedict XVI who speaks clearly about how the clergy
and religious must view the laity in the Church: They must no longer be viewed as ‘collaborators’ of the clergy but truly recognized as ‘co-responsible’ for the Church’s being
and action…” In other words, the laity are not simply called to assist or help the clergy
but have a special role and are equally responsible for the ministry in the community.
While clergy, religious, and laity each have distinctive roles to play in the Church, each
role is of equal importance and equally necessary for the functioning of the Church.
Next Sunday, October 16th we will have our Parish Assembly at 2:00 pm in the Parish
Center. I am excited about the assembly because I hope that it will be a wonderful
example of what it means to be the Church. We will gather as equals both clergy and
laity; we will gather in all our diversity with different languages and cultures. Together
under the Spirit’s guidance, in the name of Jesus Christ, we will plan for our future. If
you have not yet committed to come to the assembly next week, I hope that you will
because we are ALL called by Christ to love and care of this community.

FROM THE RECTOR

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,

He will come again in glory
