Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear St. Peter Chanel Parishioners,
It is with profound sadness that we share with you
the following news. Fr. Fernando Cuenca has made
a personal decision to leave the Oblates of the
Virgin Mary and the Priesthood, and is no longer
assigned to St. Peter Chanel Parish.
We will all miss Fr. Fernando. We thank him for the
good things he did here, and we will continue to
pray for him. At the end of January, another Oblate
priest will be assigned to St. Peter Chanel.
Fr. Fernando conveyed his gratitude to both the
priests and the parishioners of St. Peter Chanel for
all the kindness he received in his years here. He
asks for your prayers.
We the Oblate Priests of St. Peter Chanel humbly
ask for your prayers for ourselves and all priests,
that God will strengthen, support and enlighten
them in their sublime task and responsibility of
bringing God to men and men to God.
May Mary be our life, our sweetness and our hope.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
The Oblate Priests of St. Peter Chanel
Letter from the Pastor Concerning
Fr. Fernando Cuenca
Dear Parishioners,
Like you, we are saddened by the departure of
Father Fernando from the active ministry of the
priesthood and the religious life. We are not only
saddened because our brother has left us but also
because he will no longer be putting into practice
those unique gifts that God gives only to priests.
These gifts come from a communion with Christ
and a sharing in his power: “Apart for me you can
do nothing” (John 15:5).
What are these gifts?
Only a priest can say: “I forgive you your sins”.
Only a priest can say: “This is my body”.
Only a priest (normally a bishop) can perform the
imposition of hands and say: “Be sealed with the
gift of the Holy Spirit”.
Only a priest can anoint the sick, the elderly and the
dying.
A good priest is not only a man called but chosen.
(continued on the next column)
Once ordained, a priest is a priest forever. His
priesthood goes with him into eternal life. The catechism of the Catholic Church speaks eloquently
about this:
1581 This sacrament configures the recipient to
Christ by a special grace of the Holy Spirit, so that
he may serve as Christ’s for his Church. By ordination one is enabled to act as a representative of
Christ, Head of the Church, in his triple office of
priest, prophet and king.
1582 As in the case of Baptism and Confirmation
this share in Christ’s office is granted once for all.
The sacrament of Holy Orders, like the other two,
confers an indelible spiritual character and cannot
be repeated or conferred temporarily.
At the end of January, our provincial will send another priest here. This means there will be five
priests once again to serve the people. The combined number of years in the priesthood will be 160.
Each one of us values and loves his priesthood, and
looks forward to serving you.
Please continue to pray for us. What is most important is our relationship with Christ. Pope Benedict wrote the following beautiful words:
“For this reason, an intimate personal relationship
with Christ is fundamental for priestly life and ministry. All priestly formation should lead to the fostering of this relationship. The priest should be a
person who knows Jesus intimately, has met Him,
and learn to love Him.”
May our Lady intercede for all of us, that Saint Peter
Chanel will be a parish of great love for, and communion with, Jesus.
May God bless each and every one of you.
Sincerely yours,
Fr. Larry Darnell, OMV
Saint Theresa's Prayer
May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are
meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are
born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and
pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let His presence settle into your bones, and allow your
soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

Otro sacerdote Oblato será asignado a
No solo estamos tristes
Sinceramente,
Padre Larry Darnell, OMV

"I would like to say a special word to women who have had an
abortion. The Church is aware of the factors, which may have
influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many
cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound
in your heart may not have healed. Certainly what has happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to
discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand
what happened and face it honestly."
Pope John Paul II
If you are a Catholic and you had an abortion in the past, please
see a priest and ask for a private confession. WLC offers free
post abortion counseling. Call (562)693-8803.
PRAYING THROUGH MARY FOR VOCATIONS
Families that attend the 8:00 am, 10:00 am, 12:00 noon and 2:00
p.m. Sunday Masses, can register to take a Pilgrim Statue of the
Blessed Mother into their homes. They commit themselves to pray
for one week the Rosary as a family, for an increase in the harvest
of vocations to religious life and the Priesthood. If you want to host
the Blessed Mother into your home please register at the Office.
*Please Pick up and Return the Pilgrim Statue at the
same Mass.*
KNEELERS
We would appreciate it very much if during the celebration of the Mass you would lower the kneelers with your
hands, slowly and as quietly as possible, in keeping with
the reverence and the prayerful atmosphere that must
pervade the whole Liturgy at all times. Please, do not
drop the kneelers on the floor.
