ST. MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Faith, Love, Community, Service ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Fourth Sunday of Easter April 26, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Monsignor John Talesfore, Pastor Dear Parishioners, school Familes and Alumni, One Notre Dame Avenue San Mateo, CA 94402 This weekend I’m reminded of where we’ve just been, what’s happening now, and where we’re going…. Where we’ve just been… last weekend the campus was filled with laughter, music and high spirits. The 23rd Annual St Matthew Parish Carnival was in full swing. Parishioners, school families, and alumni joined together for two days of fun. I started to reflect on my own childhood as I watched the excitement build on the faces of all the children. Were they weaving dreams of their own, high up on the rides? Few experiences stay with us like the ones we experience in childhood. Long may the Carnival continue, allowing memories and community to build. What’s happening now… On Saturday evening, April 25th, we welcome back our alumni community with open arms. The 3rd Annual Alumni Grand Reunion honors classmates from as far back as 1945. Over 80 years of friendships and memories will be celebrated this evening at Mass and afterwards at a special dinner in the auditorium. In the years since our alumni left the hallways of St. Matt’s they have gone through many changes in their lives (and bodies). There is great fun in recognizing faces we haven’t seen in a while. The memories will come flooding back this evening: walking downtown to the original church on Ellsworth (now Walgreens) to celebrate Mass, or sitting in their class of 50 (yes, 50 students) learning from the Sisters of the Holy Cross, our first teachers here on campus. Where we’re going… on Sunday we welcome the newest members of the St Matthew community. Fifty five new families will be joining the current school community for the first time to celebrate Family Mass. There will be many things, many traditions, that as new families they will come to know. The caring staff will provide our young ladies and gentlemen with a nurturing environment. Service projects, praying for others, and celebrations to benefit others are just a few of the ways that we are a positive force in the St. Mathew community. We welcome them unreservedly into St. Matthew Catholic School. We thank God for these wonderful events and all the hard working, generous people who are making it happen. Here’s to a blessed and safe week ahead. Ann Connelly Admissions & Alumni Development Director St Matthew Catholic School ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Staring Monday, May 4th. we are going to start locking the main Church at 4:00pm. on the weekdays. The chapel and two adjacent vestibules (“cry room and choir vestibule”) will re main open until 9:00pm as always. 105 [email protected] [email protected] Rev. Massai ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Fourth Sunday of Easter Traditionally, the Fourth Sunday of Easter (today) is also called Good Shepherd Sunday. Christ tells us in today's Gospel from John, "I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and they know me." The image of Christ as the shepherd is one of the oldest in the Church. Even in the catacombs there is an ancient drawing of Christ carrying a sheep on his shoulders. Sometime it is difficult for us to view ourselves as sheep. There is something passive and reliant in that image which may bother our sense of independence. However, if we are honest with ourselves, we know that we need the Lord's help and guidance. An essential part of living a stewardship way of life is placing our lives in the hands of our Good Shepherd nonetheless. Celebrate one mystery that Christ gave his life for us on the Cross. If we accept the fact that He is our Savior and that He is our Shepherd, we are better able to serve as shepherds to one another. Stewardship is a life of giving self, a life of selfgiving. We must constantly work to live up to the Lord's expectations of us, but we must also know that He is our shepherd, Our Good Shepherd, and he is always there for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
