We are Christian communities in the Roman
Catholic Tradition, and we commit ourselves to
become more Christ-like through the service to
God and neighbor.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION, AUGUST 15

the Blessed Virgin Mary, Friday, August 15:

THE HISTORY OF
OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL
Devotion to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel began
among the Carmelites in thanksgiving for all
the favors received through the intercession of
the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Carmelites had
been expelled from the East under persecution,
and many powerful enemies were denying that
the Order had the right to exist and develop in
the West. The friars, especially the Prior
General, St. Simon Stock, implored the Blessed
Mother’s help.
The Blessed Mother appeared to St. Simon
Stock on July 16, 1251, gave him the holy
Scapular of Carmel, and promised, “This will
be to you and to all Carmelites a privilege, that
he who dies in this will not suffer eternal fire.”
Opposition to the Order disappeared through
this sign of Mary’s good will.
A statue of our Lady of Mt. Carmel (given to
Fr. Paul by his parishioners at St. Joseph
Church, Waycross) is currently in the narthex
(entryway) of St. Paul.
