OVERCOMING MACHISMO
Social psychologists tell us that our Hispanic society is
predominantly matriarchal, a society where the mother is the
center of attention around whom all our activity moves. Every
Hispanic man knows how his own mother is venerated and
honored, since she represents the seal of life. She engenders,
nourishes, and nurtures life most admirably. The mother, gifted
by God, is the one who keeps the unity of the family. She is the
one who executes the enormous task of making a house in to
a home. She is the one who ensure the survival of the family.
It is then paradoxical that prevalent in our culture there
is also a set of attitudes and behaviors called machismo, which
harm both men and women. Hispanic men are probably also
very much aware that machismo is under attack.
Understanding machista behaviors and their roots may open
the way for the liberation not only of women, but also of men.
Hispanic men have often experienced how our
mothers have never left our side or rejected us. Our Hispanic
mothers have earned the title of champion, since they
consistently come out victorious over every adversity. The
Hispanic mother is superior in terms of her endurance and skill.
She distinguishes herself by her perseverance. She is a
champions when she has to find ways to defend her children.
She is the one who comes forward when her children have
problems and difficulties.
In our matriarchal society God’s own mother has a
preferential place. It is not necessary to know a lot of doctrine
to be associated with the institutional church in order to be
devoted to the Virgin Mary. Mary, the Mother of God, is the
mother par excellence of the Hispanic people.
In a matriarchal society, men take on roles and
functions that emphasize their masculinity, as if to compensate
for the undeniable fact that women are the center of attention
and activity. That is where the painful machista behavior of
many—so harmful to the Hispanic community—starts. The
machista man reflects big problems of identity when he tries to
show that he is superior to others.
A machista person exhibits a rough, crude, and
inconsiderate behavior. He manifests and expresses himself
with certain airs or superiority. The macho does not depend on
anything or anyone: it takes care of himself. Such is his selfsufficiency that a personal relationship with God or any other
figure in the realm spirituality is unnecessary. The machista
culture considers that the religious experience is very tied to
those sentiments or feelings. To allow himself to be dominated
or controlled by such feelings is basically intolerable for the
machista. It is perceived as a weakness. As a result, the
religious experience and everything good and holy, is for
women, children, and elderly, but not for him. It’s not that he
doesn’t believe, but he just “doesn't like fanaticism.” He is one
of those who goes to church and sits in the back, always
standing, so as not to bend his knees humbly in a attitude of
submission.
But there can be no machista without women! And the
more macho a man wants to be, really depends on the woman.

SUPERAR EL MACHISMO
Nuestra sociedad, nos dicen los psicólogos, sociales,
es una sociedad predominantemente matriarcal, o sea, una
sociedad en la que la madre es el centro de atención y el eje
alrededor del cual gira toda nuestra actividad humana. El
hombre hispano sabe bien cómo su propia madre es venerada
y honrada pues representa la sede de la vida. Ella es quien la
engendra, la nutre y la adelanta de manera excepcional. La
mujer madre, dotada por Dios, es la que teje cohesión y
unidad en la familia.
Es por tanto paradójico que también haya en nuestra
cultura una presencia prevalente de toda una serie de
actitudes que llamamos machismo, que perjudican mucho a
tanto mujeres como hombres. Los hombres hispanos
probablemente son conscientes de que el machismo está
siendo muy criticado. Comprender los comportamientos
machistas y sus raíces puede abrir el camino a la liberación,
tanto de la mujer como del hombre.
Los hombres hispanos han experimentado a menudo
cómo nuestras madres siempre han estado de nuestro lado.
Nuestra madre hispana se gana el titulo de campeona pues
con consistencia inexplicable sabe salir victoriosa en la
adversidad. Da muestra de superioridad en términos de
aguante y destreza. Es campeona cuando le toca buscar
medios y maneras de defender a los suyos. Es ella quien da la
cara cuando sus hijos tienen dificultades y problemas.
ES en esta sociedad matriarcal nuestra donde la
propia madre de Dios ocupa un sitio de preferencia. No hay
que saber mucha doctrina, ni necesariamente estar
relacionado con la iglesia institucional, para ser devoto de la
Virgen María. María, la Madre de Dios, es la Madre por
excelencia de nuestro pueblo hispano.
En una sociedad matriarcal, el hombre asume roles y
funciones que, de manera dramática, tratan de hacer resaltar
su hombría, como queriendo compensar el hecho innegable de
que la mujer es el centro de toda atención y actividad. De ahí
el doloroso comportamiento machista, que tanto perjudica a
nuestra cultura hispana. Es el hombre machista el que refleja
grandes problemas de identidad cuando actúa con empeño de
demostrar que él es más que los demás.
Una persona machista exhibe un comportamiento
brusco, bruto e inconsiderado. Se manifiesta y expresa con
ciertos aires de superioridad. El macho no depende de nada ni
de nadie; se puede valer por sí solo. Tal es autosuficiencia,
que la propia relación con Dios o con cualquier figura en el
campo de lo espiritual es innecesaria. La cultura machista
considera que la experiencia religiosa está muy atada a los
sentimientos. El dejarse dominar o controlar por los
sentimientos es para el macho algo intolerable. Se juzga como
una debilidad. Así también como resultado, se juzga la
experiencia religiosa y todo lo que tenga que ver con la vida
espiritual. Curas, sacramentos, todo eso es santo y bueno,
pero para mujeres, niños y viejos, no para él. No es que él no
sea creyente, pero “no me gusta el fanatismo”, dice. Él es de
los que van al templo y se quedan en la parte de atrás, de pie
siempre, por aquello de no tener que humildemente doblar la
rodilla en actitud de sumisión.
Pero, ¡no hay hombres machistas sin mujeres! Y
entre más macho quiere ser el hombre, más depende de la
