Unidad 2, Lección 4: El pretérito
Notes:
En esta lección, empezamos con un tiempo
diferente, el tiempo del pretérito. En español, hay
dos tiempos usados para hablar en el pasado.
En Unidad 2, nos enfocamos en el pretérito, el
tiempo para hablar de acciones cumplidas en el
pasado.
Aquí puedes ver las tres preguntas principales
para esta lección.
¿A qué hora te despertaste hoy?
aprendiste . Es la forma de tú del verbo
aprender. La pregunta significa “Did you learn
your vocabulary already?” Puedes ver que
usamos el pasado en esta pregunta.
El verbo en la tercera pregunta es el verbo
perdió. Viene del infinitivo perder, to lose.

Debes darte cuenta de que las formas de los
verbos en el pretérito no tienen mucho en común
con el presente. Por eso, va a ser muy
importante memorizar rápidamente los básicos
del tiempo del pretérito.

Notes:
As we go through this lesson, there are a few
steps you can take to master our objectives.
Take notes. These notes will help you on future
assignments.
Practice pronunciation. When given time in the
lesson, repeat the words as you hear them.
Use your vocabulary list as we go along. The
concepts presented here are presented using
this lesson’s vocabulary list.
Remember the lesson goals and objectives! By
the end of this lesson, you should be able to talk
about your daily routine and someone else’s.
Notes:
Let’s take a look at a few English sentences. We
are going to pay particular attention to the verbs
in each sentence.
The girl reflects on her science class. The verb
reflects is a present tense verb. If we were
translating this sentence, we would use the
routine present tense endings you learned a
while ago with the verb reflexionar. The
conjugated verb would be reflexiona, using the a
ending that corresponds to the ella form.
The girl reflected on her science class. This
sentence shows the use of the past tense. If we
were translating, we would need to use a past
tense in Spanish. There are two past tenses. We
will learn them one by one. The name of the one
we will be studying in this module is the preterite,

el pretérito. We would translate this sentence
using the preterite tense of the verb reflexionar.
In World History, the students are giving a
speech today. The verb is are giving. This is a
present tense use of the verb dar in Spanish. We
would translate using the regular present and the
verb would be dan.
In comparison with the sentence above, this next
sentence shows the past tense. In World History,
the students gave a speech today. Gave is a
past tense verb. Thus, to translate this verb into
Spanish, we would need to use a past tense, and
more specifically, the preterite tense.

Notes:
Spanish 1 was dedicated to the mastery of the
present tense. In Spanish 2, you will focus on
mastering the past tense. Learning the preterite
is the first step!
Just as you had a series of endings to memorize
for the regular present tense, you will need to
memorize these endings for the preterite. The
quicker you memorize the endings, the easier life
will be for you!
Here are the endings for regular –AR verbs in
the preterite tense.
Notes:
Here you can see a sample verb, ganar,
conjugated in all forms in the preterite tense.
