The New Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 Health Newsletter March 2011 As we find ourselves heading into March, National Nutrition Month, it seems appropriate and fitting to bring you up to speed on the main points included in the newest edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Updated last year, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 help to sum up the available research surrounding nutrition recommendations for living a healthy lifestyle through healthy eating. The goals of these Dietary Guidelines are to encourage Americans to adopt a healthier diet, by focusing on nutrient-dense foods which promote healthy weight maintenance. The guidelines also help dietitians; doctors and other medical professionals better guide the populations they serve by making the most educated recommendations for the healthiest of outcomes. Incorporating these few fundamentals into your eating plan, will help you succeed in managing a healthy weight for a lifetime. Try eating less of these: • Sodium or salt • Solid fats Saturated and Trans fats on a food label • Cholesterol • Added sugar • Refined grains white bread, white rice, non whole-wheat products, enriched pasta • Alcohol Add more of these: • Fruits • Vegetables • Whole grains whole wheat breads and pastas, brown rice, barley, quinoa, oats, rye • Fat free and low fat milk, yogurt and cheeses • Seafood • Lean meats, chicken and turkey • Unsalted nuts and seeds Achieve and maintain a healthy weight by avoiding excessive calorie intake each day • Read food labels • Follow serving size recommendations for the foods you choose • Add in more plant foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and beans/legumes • Avoid foods high in saturated and Trans fats Be consistent with a healthy eating pattern • Eat 3 reasonable or 6 small meals a day • Base your calorie intake on the food guide pyramid (www.mypyramid.gov) • Avoid drinking your calories by cutting out or cutting back on regular soda, sweetened iced teas, juices and sports drinks • Consider eating more vegetarian meals These guidelines are specifically generalized to a way that will make them realistic for all Americans to follow. If you don't like to eat whole wheat, you can choose rye bread or oatbased bread. People who like vegetables but not many fruits can also make healthy choices based on these recommendations. It is important to incorporate all of these recommendations into your daily life to achieve a healthy meal plan and to maintain a healthy weight.
