THE WAITING GAME
WATCHING, NOT WAITING
Every Sunday, after the Lord’s Prayer, we hear the
words of an Advent prayer: “We wait in joyful hope for
the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.” In Latin, these
words are Exspectantes beatam spem et adventum
Salvatoris nostri Jesu Christi. We see our own words
“expectant” and “advent” in them. Another way to say this
might be “We are expectant, in joyful hope, at the advent
of our Savior, Jesus Christ.” Mothers and fathers know
that being expectant, while it is a time of joyful hope, is
not always an easy time. It is a mistake for us to think that
our waiting in joyful hope for the coming of Christ can be
a passive, uninvolved time. Quite the contrary! Like
expectant parents, we must constantly be working to make
sure everything is ready for the important arrival! As
Isaiah prays to the coming Lord: “Would that you might
meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our
ways!” (Isaiah 64:4).
In the Gospel, Jesus moves us from passive
waiting to the attitude of waiting in its active form—
watchfulness. It is possible, when we are merely waiting,
to occupy ourselves with other things. What Jesus tells us
today is that we must be occupied with the work of the
master; we must be alert, we must be met by him upon his
return doing right and being mindful of him in our ways.
Paul consoles us that this vigilant watchfulness need not
tire us out, for Christ himself has enriched us and
strengthened us to remain firm in our expectation, our
joyful hope. It is in this way that we wait and watch for the
day of our Lord Jesus Christ, when he is revealed to us in
glory.
Today’s Readings: Isaiah 63:16b–17, 19b; 64:2–7; Psalm 80:2–3,
15–16, 18–19; 1 Corinthians 1:3–9; Mark 13:33–37

First Sunday of Advent
November 27, 2011
Be watchful! Be alert!
You do not know when the time will come.
— Mark 13:33
A new year of faith begins today. We
begin a new Church year of growing in
Christ together as disciples of the Lord. To
begin again is a wonderful thing, allowing
us to renew, recommit, and clarify where we are going
and how we hope to get there. This is also a special
beginning for a special group of people in St. Bernard’s.
Some are seeking Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist
– full communion in the Church. Others, though
baptized, are seeking through Confirmation and
Eucharist to complete their initiation sacraments and to
live full communion in the Church. Through the RCIA,
these members of this community allow us to welcome
them and celebrate each step of progress along this
journey of faith. Today, we welcome them and
acknowledge their participation in this process. Today,
we bless their senses and their body and spirit as they
take their first step to belonging with us. As they desire
and seek full communion with great anticipation, we
hopefully see in their desire the great gift we already
have. Hopefully, through them we thank God for his
great love and acceptance. Hopefully, we rejoice in who
we have become in Christ Jesus and for that reason,
begin again by renewing, recommitting and clarifying the
ongoing journey of faith – full communion with God and
with one another!

NEW (REVISED) TRANSLATION FOR THE MASS:
NEW (REVISED) TRANSLATION FOR THE MASS:
“The Lord be with you. * And with your spirit!” These
are some of the newly translated English text of the Mass.
This is an attempt to be more accurate in translating from
the original Latin. In the weeks ahead we will investigate a
few of these translations to examine what they offer in our
understanding of the sacred text of the Mass. You may
also investigate these changes for yourself by going to
the internet to the United States Conference of Bishop
site: http://old.usccb.org/romanmissal/ Go to ‘sample
texts’ then to ‘Order of Mass’ or ‘Order of Mass –
annotated’ for a look at the people’s parts and some of
the Eucharistic Prayer parts.

Un año Nuevo de fe empieza hoy. Damos
principio a un Nuevo año de la Iglesia, de
crecer juntos como discípulos del Señor.
El volver a empezar es algo hermoso,
permitiéndonos volver a comprometernos, a renovarnos, y
Esperamos, a
