FAITHFUL AND HOPEFUL
FAITHFUL AND PRUDENT STEWARDS
The Letter to the Hebrews binds up beautifully the
first two of the great triumvirate of Christian virtues: faith
and hope. When what we hope for is realized, faith is
born; in faith we have the evidence of what still remains
unseen. Hebrews puts before us our ancestors in faith:
Abraham and Sarah. It illustrates their lives of faith, their
hopes realized so that faith might be born, their faith as
witness to all that is yet intangible to us. It is the covenant
made and kept in faith, with loving-kindness, that is our
inheritance from them. Though they long ago passed over
from this life to their life among the stars used to describe
their descendants, that covenant lives on, given life anew
in the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It is to that covenant in Christ that we are each called
again in the faith given to us in baptism; it is that covenant
that brings forth and seals the vocation God has called us
to live in joyful hope until we, too, reach our homeland in
heaven with Abraham and Sarah.
Who doesn’t need to fear the return of the master?
The faithful and prudent steward, that’s who. It is this steward

who has taken what the master has given and has treated it—no
matter what—as a great gift and treasure. Today we get the first
glimmers of the words about the coming of Christ whom we
await in joyful hope. These will increasingly characterize the
Gospels for the next several months. Jesus gives us images of
surrender that are characteristic of faithful disciples: he speaks
of loins girt for exodus and lamps lit for the bridegroom’s
coming. He tells of the master returning to the household,
eagerly anticipating what has transpired there in his absence; he
forewarns that the master alone knows the time of his return.
These teachings could strike fear into the hearts of those
listening. Jesus concludes by saying: “Much will be required of
the person entrusted with much” (Luke 12:48). The vocation of
the Christian disciple is to realize that whatever has been
bestowed on us is “much” in the master’s eyes. Disciples’
vocations are lived faithfully and prudently, for they do not wait
for the master’s return in dread; they hope for it in joy.

SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN)
(1891-1942)
“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand,
“let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words
as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemnation of
their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from
Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s
search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant
career as professor and author and, finally, to the
Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one
sitting, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Baptized on
January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ initiation
into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the
feast of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the
cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in
Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecution
of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other
nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter
of Israel and of the Church.

Coadjutor Archbishop Jose Gomez is getting
acquainted with the people of the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles by celebrating a
Sunday Mass at a parish in each of the
twenty deaneries.
The Mass for this
Deanery will be celebrated at Our Lady of
Lourdes Parish, Apperson Street and Tujunga Canyon
Boulevard, Tujunga, at 12:30p.m. on Sunday August 29th.
There will be a simple reception and an opportunity to greet
the Archbishop following the Mass. This will be a bilingual
Mass (English-Spanish) and all are welcome to attend and
meet Archbishop Gomez.

El Arzobispo Coadjutor José Gómez estará
celebrando la Misa dominical en las parroquias
de cada uno de los veinte decanatos para
conocer y convivir con la gente de la
Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. La Misa para este
Decanato se llevará a cabo el Domingo 29 de Agosto a las
12:30pm en la parroquia de Our Lady of Lourdes ubicada entre
la calle Apperson y Tujunga Canyon Blvd., en la ciudad de
Tujunga. Después de la Misa habrá una recepción simple y
tendremos la oportunidad de saludar al Arzobispo. Esta Misa
sera bilingüe (inglés y español). Todos son bienvenidos!
SANTA TERESA BENEDICTA DE LA CRUZ (1891-1942)
Edith Stein nació y creció en una familia judía muy piadosa.
Siempre fue muy inteligente y a los 13 años renunció a Dios,
declarándose atea. A los 23 años obtuvo un doctorado en filosofía
y, tras el testimonio de la viuda de quien fuera su maestro, leyó
en una sola noche la vida de Santa Teresa de Ávila y ahí encontró
la verdad. Abrazó la fe cristiana y se hizo bautizar, cosa que causó
mucho dolor a su madre. Posteriormente, más dolor causó cuando
les dijo que se haría monja carmelita, como Teresa. Ahí brilló por
su pensamiento filosófico y también por su capacidad de enseñar.
Como religiosa adoptó el nombre Benedicta de la Cruz (bendecida
de la cruz), nombre que marcaría su vida de sacrificio. Fue
trasladada a Holanda, pero ahí, en 1942 llegó la Gestapo (policía
secreta alemana) y la arrestaron por ser judía. Junto con otros
hermanos y hermanas, la enviaron en un tren hasta Auschwitz, un
campo de concentración que se encuentra en Polonia, ahí, murió
valientemente en la cámara de gas. Fue canonizada en 1998.

Una
educación Catolica en San Bernardo es costeable. La
colegiatura por niño puede parecer intimidante y desalentadora
cuando se enfoca únicamente en la cantidad total por año, pero
si lo divide en partes los totales figuran asi:
