National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of
Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in
January and runs all week, which in 2016 is January 31 - February
6. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2016 is
“Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”
Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses,
open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners
and community members. Through these events, schools focus on
the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.
2016 PSA PRAYER
The Pastoral Services Appeal is an annual campaign of the Orange Catholic
Foundation held on behalf of the Diocese of Orange that grants funds to support ministries and services that serve all parishes and the local community. It also gives parishes the opportunity to raise significant capital funds by earning rebates over their
own individual parish goal.

Lord God,
You have called us to be faithful and wise stewards
whom You have set to watch over Your household.
Increase our gratitude for Your many gifts to us.
And from Your blessings, may we joyfully share
Your Gospel
so that others will know the outpouring of Your Love.
May we each be blessed for doing our share of
Your work
While awaiting that great day of the Lord, Your Son,
until He comes again.
Amen.

Jubilee Year of Mercy, Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Rave reviews greeted Jesus' first hometown homily proclaiming a year of God's mercy, but the mood
turned violent when he went on to declare that God's mercy embraces outsiders; it rejects distinctions between citizen and foreigner, acceptable and unworthy, even sinner and saint. Far from being anyone's personal possession, God's kingdom is open to everyone, God's love unconditional, God's mercy boundless.
By this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis repeats Jesus' challenge in today's Gospel to broaden our
horizons until our vision matches Jesus' vision of every sinner as a potential saint, and each suffering
stranger as our neighbor. Jesus, says Pope Francis, continually went beyond the law, keeping company
with public sinners and even sharing meals with them to demonstrate that God's mercy is "the beating
heart of the Gospel" (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). To be truly Jesus' disciples, such unconditional love and
boundless mercy must also be at the center of all we say and do. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Papal quotes

Today’s Scripture
First Reading -- God appoints Jeremiah as prophet to the nations
(Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19).
Psalm -- I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71).
Second Reading -- Love with its many facets is the most important of the
virtues (1 Corinthians 12:31 -- 13:13 [13:4-13]).
Gospel -- When Jesus claims his salvific mission is for all people, not just
the Jews, he is expelled by the enraged members of the Nazarean synagogue (Luke 4:21-30).

Collection of last year’s blessed palms
for Ash Wednesday
Through the first week of February we will be collecting the palms that you received on Palm Sunday of
last year. We will be burning the old palms and use the
ashes on Ash Wednesday, February 10th.
Please place your old palms in the marked containers at the exits of the church or give them to the Parish
Office.

The Great Hymn to Love
It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down to write what we now
know as the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians, knew that he was penning what was to become one of the keystones of Christian ethics. In this
brief passage, he set down ideals about love that have held fast through the
centuries. Sometimes we may think that because these are ideals to which
we aspire, we are excused from them in our daily living.
But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends, providing them
with some sound advice about what it meant--and still means--to live in
love, day by day, as a follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends
a broadening of the great commands of Jesus to love God and neighbor.
Today we hear what this love must look like in our own actions, and how it
ought to guide our relationships with others. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
Treasures from our Tradition
For the first four centuries or so, there seems not to have been a sense
of marriage as a church institution. Christians followed civil law, which
kept the wedding in a family setting. Bishops wanted people to be good
citizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government's role in
marriage. In general, they expected Christians to know that marriage was
good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on the
wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage was a divine institution,
that Christ blessed it especially, and they loved referring to the miracle at
the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the official
religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter.
On wedding days people gathered in the bride's house, where the father
would "give her hand" to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the
couple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be
given. Everyone walked in procession to the bride's new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary
to invite a priest or bishop to give a blessing at the meal or the day before. It
was a nice thing to do, completely optional, but had a "photo-op" feel to it
that was widely emulated. Before long, at least in the East, it looked as if
the priest were joining the couple in marriage and blessing the union. --Rev.

Bible Overview and the Gospel of Luke
Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m. in the youth room
At our Parish Bible Study nights, we split our
study time between the Gospel and an overview of the
entire Bible. This helps beginners to get their bearings
among all the many books and sometimes confusing
history of the Old Testament. Feel free to drop in any
week; it's not necessary to start from the beginning or
attend every single week. Blessings!

conciencia de la persona; el elegido se asombra y no entiende muy bien;

amor, nos lanzamos a hacer incluso lo que nos parece que nos queda demasiado grande;
¿Qué riesgos estás dispuesto a tomar
