“WELCOME!”
Dear Friends,
Crosses. Many people carry them. Some do
anything they can to avoid the burden of sacrifice
or cross carrying. Today Jesus makes it completely
clear. “Whoever does not carry his own cross and
come after me cannot be my disciple.” A cross
demands sacrifice. If we want to call ourselves
disciples we must seek the wisdom of God as
Solomon did in the first reading today and really
aspire to do God’s will, not our own will.
Think of the cross you carry. Do you bear the burden with
hope? Do you convey the cross uncomplainingly? Our Lord said we
must follow Him. Coming after Jesus, following the Lord requires
much of us. Saint Ignatius in his Spiritual Exercises named such a
prerequisite for discipleship a “big soul.” A big soul produces a loving
generous and selfless spirit. Such a spirit willingly carries a cross
humbly and gently, and strives above all to imitate Christ. Let’s ask,
“Am I open to all? Do I forgive those who harm me? Do I surrender
my life to God?” Jesus challenges us to be the best version of ourselves
that we can be.
If Jesus is our all in all, if our relationship with the Lord really
is the most important of our relationships, then we have to continue
to learn from his words and actions. In his living, acting, welcoming,
preaching, teaching, healing, forgiving, loving and promising, Jesus
reveals a big heart, a generous spirit. We, coming after him can do
much of the same if we allow ourselves to die to selfish desires and
willingly and with a big soul, take up our own crosses. Sure it is
counter cultural, but it will produce great fruit, especially those of
peace and joy.
RCIA… Four letters that mean WELCOME! So many times
we have mentioned that all are welcome at Saint John Berchmans.
Word for word it signifies Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.
Practically speaking, the RCIA program allows people of all faiths
to come together to learn a bit more about the Catholic Church, its
traditions and customs, their own spiritual paths, and God’s love.
As they walk the road of RCIA, some decide to join our community
and are fully welcomed, fully initiated at the Easter Vigil in mid
April. I wholeheartedly invite you to join us. Shelagh Donoghue is
coordinating the efforts here. Reach out to her if you are interested.
We begin in October.
At Saint John Berchmans, we hope many will walk the path of
RCIA. Maybe you have questions, as so many do, about the spiritual
life in general, or the Catholic Church specifically. Here are some
questions I have heard people ask, that I hope we can discuss, among
other things, at some of our RCIA gatherings.
• Why is there so much suffering in the world?
• What is the Trinity?
• How can I explain my faith/beliefs to others?
• What does it mean to be Catholic?
• What’s the difference between the Catholic Church and other
Churches?
• What are the Sacraments and why does the Catholic Church have
seven?
• What do we mean when we talk about the Liturgical Seasons?
• Why do Catholics do what they do at Mass?
• What is the organization and structure of the Catholic Church?
• What is the role of nuns in the Church? What about women?
• What does the Catholic Church really teach about Mary and the
Saints?
• What does one have to believe as a Catholic?
• What happened at Vatican II?
• Why do Catholics pray the Rosary?
• How does the Catholic Church relate to other faiths?
These and so many other topics can be discussed along the RCIA
journey. So, if you know people who you think might benefit from
a program like this, invite them. All are Welcome at Saint John
Berchmans! Shout it from the rooftops!
Welcome, too, are the Children. It is the moral duty of all
Catholic parents to bring their children up in the practice of the
faith. Religious Education begins next Saturday. ALL CHILDREN
OF CATECHETICAL AGE (5-15) SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN
FORMAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION. It is not just a sacramental
preparation program. Please register your children in Religious
Education if they do not attend a Catholic school. And please bring
your children to Mass! Jesus said, “Let the Children come to me and
do not hinder them.” They learn from our words… and our actions.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Is God calling you to a deeper relationship? Looking for
answers to questions you can’t quite name? Consider joining
our RCIA program. The Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older who would like
to learn more about the Catholic faith and for those who
seek to be baptized, receive First Holy Communion and be
confirmed in the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help
you complete the necessary steps to become a member
of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in another
Christian denomination. RCIA meets on Thursday evenings,
three times per month from September to April. If you are
interested in learning more, if you know of anyone who
might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are willing
to help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact Shelagh

THE CUP OF OUR LIFE
Are you thirsting for a more disciplined prayer life? This new
six week program will focus on group study and prayer using
Joyce Rupp’s book, “The Cup of Our Life.” Open your eyes
to see how the ordinary cups we use each day can become
sacred vessels that connect us with life and draw us closer to
God. This program will meet Thursdays, Sept. 22-Oct. 27,
from 9-11 a.m. in the St. John Berchmans School Chapel.
Materials will be provided. There is a suggested donation of

Labor Day Special Mass Time
Monday, Sept. 5, is Labor Day. There will
be one morning Mass celebrated at 9 a.m.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word program resumes on
Sunday, Sept. 11, and will take place on the second Sunday
of the month at the 9:45 a.m. Mass. After the Introductory
Rites of Mass, children age 3 to 2nd grade are invited forward
to receive a blessing from the priest. The children and their
adult catechists adjourn to the church basement where they
listen to the day’s Gospel and participate in related art and
music activities. Children return to the Mass after the prayer
petitions. Adults interested in helping should contact Shelagh
Donoghue in the parish office.

“¡BIENVENIDOS!”
Queridos Amigos,
Cruces. Muchas personas las cargan. Algunos hacen
cualquier cosa para evitar la carga del sacrificio o
el peso de su cruz. Hoy Jesús lo aclara. “El que no
carga su cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo.”
Una cruz exige sacrificio. Si deseamos llamarnos
discípulos debemos buscar la sabiduría de Dios
como lo hizo Salomón en la primera lectura de hoy y
realmente anhelar a hacer la voluntad de Dios, y no
hacer lo que se nos plazca.
Piense en la cruz que usted carga. ¿La carga con esperanza? ¿La transporta
sin quejarse? Nuestro Señor dijo que debemos seguirlo. Llegando
después de Jesús, seguir al Señor requiere a mucho de nosotros. San
Ignacio en sus Ejercicios Espirituales nombró tal requisito previo para
el discipulado una “alma grande.” Un alma grande produce un espíritu
generoso y amor desinteresado. Tal espíritu carga voluntariamente una
cruz con humildad y gentileza y se esfuerza sobre todo a imitar a Cristo.
Preguntémonos, “¿Estoy disponible para todos? ¿Perdono a los que me
perjudican? ¿Entrego mi vida a Dios?” Jesús nos desafía a que seamos la
mejor versión de nosotros mismos que podamos ser.
Si Jesús es nuestro todo en todo, si nuestra relación con el Señor
realmente es la más importante de nuestras relaciones, entonces tenemos
que seguir aprendiendo de sus palabras y acciones. Por medio de su
vida, su comportamiento, dando la bienvenida, predicando, enseñando,
sanando, perdonando, amando y prometiendo. Jesús revela un gran
corazón, un espíritu generoso. Nosotros al seguirlo podemos hacer lo
mismo si permitimos que desaparezcan los deseos egoístas y estamos
dispuestos y con una alma grande a cargar nuestras propias cruces.
Claro es contracultural, pero producirá gran fruto, especialmente el de
la paz y alegría.
RICA ... Cuatro letras que significan BIENVENIDOS! Tantas veces
hemos mencionado que todos son bienvenidos en San Juan Berchmans.
La palabra significa Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos. En
términos prácticos, el programa de RICA permite a las personas de todas
las religiones a unirse para aprender un poco más acerca de la Iglesia
Católica, sus tradiciones y costumbres, sus propios caminos espirituales,
y el amor de Dios. Mientras caminan la jornada de RICA, algunos
deciden unirse a nuestra comunidad y son totalmente bienvenidos,
completamente iniciados en la Vigilia de Pascua a mediados de abril.
Sinceramente le invito a unirse a nosotros. Shelagh Donoghue es la
coordinadora del programa. Comuníquese con ella si está interesado.
Comenzaremos en octubre.
Esperamos que muchos comiencen la jornada de RICA en San Juan

LITURGIA DE LA PALABRA DE NIÑOS
El programa de Liturgia de la Palabra de Niños comenzará
nuevamente el domingo 11 de septiembre y ocurrirá el
segundo domingo del mes. Después de los Ritos Iniciales

Religious Education classes begin on Saturday, Sept. 10. Returning
and new students are asked to register for classes as soon as possible. Blue registration forms are available in the back of church, in
the rectory office or on the parish website at: www.stjohnberchmans.org/religious-education.
Students who attended the PreCommunion or PreConfirmation
classes during the 2015-2016 school year must register again for
the coming year so they will be able to make First Holy Communion or Confirmation in 2017.
We are also looking for adults to join our team of volunteer
catechists as teachers and substitutes. Religious Education meets
from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on most Saturdays from September through
April. We provide curriculum materials and training.
