A continuación vamos a ver la traducción al inglés de la explicación anterior: Igualdad John is as tall as Peter Ausencia de Igualdad (= Inferioridad) John and Peter are not so/as tall as Thomas Inferioridad John and Peter are less tall than Thomas Vamos a ver más ejemplos: (sigue el audio al mismo tiempo) IGUALDAD 8 de 17 Women are as strong as men. Aquí hemos sacado algunos ejemplos de la presentación y los hemos puesto en palabras usando comparativos: Empezamos con uno que decía Watching a romantic film 2 de 21 Y estas son las frases que podemos escribir Men are less romantic than women Men are not so romantic as women Men are not as romantic as women Women are more romantic than men Esta parte de la animación se titulaba: Coming home . Y estas son las frases que podemos escribir: When at home, men are less busy than women When at home, men are not so busy as women When at home, men are not as busy as women When at home, women are always busier than men Y ésta: Travelling 3 de 21 Y estas son las frases que podemos escribir: When packing women are less practical than men When packing women are not so practical as men When packing women are not as practical as men When packing men are more practical than women Las tres primeras frases que hemos escrito debajo de cada una de las fotos, aunque las traduzcamos con distintas palabras, nos llevan a la misma idea: una cualidad que se da en menor medida en un sujeto de la comparación que en otro Sin embargo la cuarta frase, la nueva, nos introduce una idea diferente: la de mayor cantidad estamos usando un comparativo de superioridad (más...que). Men, Women and the Working Place When we think of "diversity" we always picture different colours, different languages, different cultures... and we, almost always, forget something really important: The difference between men and women at the workplace No doubt this is just one more case of discrimination; perhaps not so obvious as those concerning colour or language or culture... but discrimination, no doubt! Many years ago there were "male" and "female" jobs depending on responsibility, physical condition, personal influences... Nowadays men and women can apply and perform any type of work. Our society does not accept discrimination by means of sex; at least not openly but... are men and women treated the same in all the workplaces? Are they paid the same salary for the same job? Is pregnancy still a handicap to get a job? These and many other similar questions for which the answers are, not always, the ones we would like to hear make us think that there is still a long way to cover before men and women will be absolutely equal. Pregunta de Elección Múltiple Diversity is... to have been born in a different country 9 de 21 something more than colour or culture or language or abilities that men and women perform the same activities Even today it is more difficult... for a pregnant woman to get a job than it is for a young man for a man to get a job than it is for a woman for a woman to get the sack than it is for a man Women's salaries are... always as high as men's salaries not always as high as men's salaries always less high than men's salaries Actividad de Espacios en Blanco Lee las frases que te ofrecemos y complétalas usando el adjetivo entre paréntesis en el grado que creas conveniente. No olvides que funcionamos con estereotipos. 1.- Men are (not, sensitive) women 10 de 21 men 3.- In many jobs women are paid (low) 4.- Some jobs are (good) salaries men others 5.- Women choose to be housewives (often) men choose to be “househusbands” Enviar Cuando nos enfrentamos a un texto o una situación que pueden ser conflictivos o polémicos sentimos la necesidad de mostrar nuestra opinión y de contrastarla con la del resto de participantes en el debate. To Do Ejemplo : I work here (enunciativa afirmativa) I do Do not work here (enunciativa negativa) you work here? (interrogativa) el propio verbo To Do se necesita a sí mismo para formar la negativa y la interrogativa Ejemplo : He does his homework every day. He doesn't do his homework every day 13 de 21 si el verbo de la oración es auxiliar o modal añadimos Not para la negación e invertimos el orden (sujeto-verbo) en la interrogativa Ejemplo: John can speak German John can not Can speak German John speak German? He is my friend He is Is not my friend he your friend? los adjetivos calificativos van siempre delante del sustantivo al que califican y son invariables Ejemplo: That old lady Those sea plural) lives near my house (ponemos OLD delante de LADY) old ladies live near my house (OLD no lleva plural aunque LADIES la posición ordinariamente aceptada cuando hay más de un adjetivo que califica a un nombre es esta: la posición de los adverbios de tiempo puede ser al principio o al final de la frase Ejemplo Yesterday I was too tired to go to the party I was too tired to go to the party yesterday los adverbios de frecuencia se sitúan detrás de los verbos auxiliares y modales pero delante de los verbos ordinarios Ejemplo: He is always They - tired (detrás del verbo auxiliar, en este caso TO BE -is) always come on Fridays (delante del verbo ordinario -COME) si hay más de un adverbio la posición normalmente aceptada es esta: Manner Place - Time Ejemplo : Peter sang the song happily in the bathroom 14 de 21 yesterday evening. 3.2. I AGREE or I DISAGREE. 15 de 21 Agreement Disagreement YOU ARE RIGHT! YOU’RE WRONG! THAT’S RIGHT! THAT ISN’T SO! I THINK SO! I DON’T THINK SO! WHAT YOU SAY’S TRUE I WOULDN’T SAY SO! YES, THAT’S IT! I’M AFRAID YOU’RE WRONG! OK THAT’S RUBBISH! 16 de 21 3. It is a discussion. Men have important things to say. Well educated wise men are ready to express their points of view. It is important for our society. They are expert on the theme discussed. The audience is probably interested in listening to what they have to say, but.....where are women? Estos adjetivos tienen normalmente dos sílabas . early -> earliest happy -> happiest crazy -> craziest 3 de 20 This is the coldest drink. You are the youngest student in the class. Who is the tallest player of the team? The earliest meeting is tomorrow. She is the happiest woman in the world. craziest dog in the neighbourhood. 2. Termina en una única consonante. nice -nicest safe -safest I am the nicest man in the planet. This car is the safest on the market. My house is the biggest on the block. big -biggest fat- fattest My sister is the fattest in the school. hot -hottest The summer is the hottest time of the year. She is the most honest person that I know. SI el adjetivo tiene más de dos sílabas o dos pero no termina en -y , utilizaremos la palabra "most" delante del adjetivo y lo mantendremos sin cambios. most honest most difficult more modern most expensive most comfortable The last test was the most difficult. Our generation is the most modern. That is the most expensive dress in the store. These shoes are the most comfortable. We need to be supportive, not admonishing, Carter says. Transcript: I think, we need to be realistic with ourselves. And we need to be supportive, you know, of developing countries, so they can do that. Like, I don’t blame them for looking dead at America, and everybody else is saying, “Excuse me? You had the right to pollute all your lives and, suddenly, you’re saying, no, we can’t?” No. But we do need to be really supportive of them, so that they’re not making the same foolish mistakes that we made. So I think that that’s really going to be the way out of it. (creo, opino..) 4. Utiliza un lenguaje coloquial "I don't blame them for looking dead at America" 5. I don’t blame them for looking dead at America" "You had the right to pollute all your lives and, suddenly, you’re saying, no, we can’t?” Sharing housework Letter sent to a magazine by Maria Smith on 28th March 2002 Hello, I'm a mother of three young children who has recently returned to study in order to be prepared to go "back to work"as soon as I find a suitable job. I am an educator in the area of gender equity and I'm studying issues that confront women returning to work. The biggest of these, and for all mothers, seems to be how to get Dad to take on a fair load of housework. My husband is great at playing with the kids or taking them to the park, or the cinema or even taking them to bed and telling stories before they fall asleep! but I'm feeling really frustrated about convincing him that he needs to think of other details, those that make housework boring and repetitive. I know there's an enormous quantity of literature about finding the work home balance but I can't find much which takes up that issue in a practical, constructive, educational manner. So... Can you, please, give me ideas about how can one teach partners to share domestic responsibilities - like cleaning the toilet? Men do as much work as women do! Everyone knows that women work more than men. In fact, most of them combine work at the home and at the office. But according to a recent study, this is just a myth, because it's just not true that women carry a heavier load. Three economists, Michael Burda of Humboldt University in Berlin, Daniel Hamermesh of the University of Texas, and Philippe Weil of the Free University of Brussels prepared a questionnaire that was passed to people in 25 countries all over the world. Some of the countries are rich, like the United States and Germany, some are poor, like Benin and Madagascar, and some are in the middle, like Hungary, Mexico, and Slovenia. The questions were about how people spent the hours of their day. In most rich countries men spend more time on market work –work outside the house with a salary- than women and women spend more time doing housework and childcare than men; but if we add the hours that men and women spend doing marketwork and housework we will get very similar results. While men and women spend about the same time working in rich countries, women do work more than men in poor countries. And the gap widens as countries get poorer.
