%%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Tooth avulsed, primary Pediatric tooth (baby tooth) avulsion: Your child's injury knocked out a primary (baby) tooth. Baby teeth that are “out of socket” are not re-implanted. The chance of complications (including interference with the developing permanent tooth) outweighs the benefit of having the tooth back in place. If there is further bleeding, cool the gum area. Have your child swish with cold water or a cold soft drink. A popsicle also works nicely. You can press a cold pack against the cheek or jaw. If bleeding is brisk, or continues despite cold drinks, press a gauze pad or cotton ball directly onto the socket. Hold it in place for 15 minutes. The child should be on a soft diet (pudding, applesauce, ice cream) for the next 10 days. Expect bad breath. We recommend a dental checkup as soon as possible to evaluate the socket for problems. A dental spacer or bridge may be needed. Call your doctor or dentist if there is severe pain, fever, inability to swallow, or severe swelling. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Tooth subluxed, primary Pediatric tooth luxation: Your child's injury knocked a tooth loose. If the tooth is not broken completely out of the socket, it can usually be saved. (Primary teeth, also known as "baby teeth," are not routinely re-implanted if they've been knocked out of the socket.) We don't provide complete treatment for dental injuries -- your child should be seen by a dentist after the emergency care. Slightly loose tooth: The injury has stretched the tissues that hold the tooth in position. If it's left alone for a few days, the tissues will tighten and the tooth will get solid again. Out-of-place tooth: This indicates a more severe injury. We usually push the tooth to its usual position. If it's severely loose, we may apply a bonding material to temporarily "splint" the tooth to the adjacent teeth. If there’s further bleeding, cool the gum area by having your child swish with cold water or a cold soft drink. A popsicle also works nicely. You can press a cold pack against the cheek or jaw. If bleeding is brisk, or continues despite cold drinks, press a gauze pad or cotton ball onto the area. Hold it in place for 15 minutes. The child should be on a soft diet (pudding, applesauce, ice cream) for the next 10 days. Expect bad breath. Your child should be seen by a dentist as soon as possible. Call your doctor or dentist if there is severe pain, fever, inability to swallow, or severe swelling. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Tooth avulsed, adult Tooth avulsion (lost tooth): A tooth has been knocked out. We don't provide complete treatment for dental injuries. You should be seen by a dentist after the emergency care. The missing tooth can be replaced by an implant or a bridge if nearby teeth are healthy. If there’s further bleeding, cool the gum area by swishing with cold water or a cold soft drink. A popsicle also works nicely. You can press a cold pack against the cheek or jaw. If bleeding is brisk, or continues despite cold drinks, press a gauze pad or cotton ball onto the socket. Call your doctor or dentist if there is severe pain, fever, inability to swallow, or severe swelling. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Tooth avulsed, replanted Tooth avulsion with re-implantation: Your tooth has been put back into its socket. This is only the first step in the treatment of this tooth. You should be seen by a dentist after the emergency care. The nerve in the tooth is likely to die, but the tooth itself can remain in place and functional if treated appropriately. Most avulsed teeth require a root canal procedure. If the tooth falls out, try to put it back into the socket immediately. Hold the tooth only by the crown (the chewing part). Don't touch the roots. If the tooth has gotten dirty, rinse the tooth in your mouth with your own saliva. Looking in the mirror, hold the tooth in the correct direction (so the front faces front). Match the root with the socket and press the tooth rapidly and VERY FIRMLY up into the socket. If there’s further bleeding, cool the gum area by swishing with cold water or a cold soft drink. A popsicle also works nicely. You can press a cold pack against the cheek or jaw. If bleeding is brisk, or continues despite cold drinks, press a gauze pad or cotton ball firmly over the tooth. Hold it in place for 15 minutes. Stay on a soft diet, such as pudding, applesauce, and ice cream for the next two weeks. Expect bad breath. See your dentist immediately. Call your doctor or dentist if there is severe pain, fever, inability to swallow, or severe swelling. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Abscess, dental Dental abscess: You have a dental abscess. This is a collection of pus from infection around the root of a tooth. The abscess starts from dental decay or severe periodontal disease. Even after the abscess is gone, the problem that caused the abscess must be treated by the dentist. The goals of treatment are to eliminate the infection and if possible, preserve the tooth. If the abscess is large, or has spread to the soft tissues of the face or neck, it will need surgical drainage. Sometimes the tooth must be pulled to clear the infection. If the tooth is saved, a root canal is usually necessary to prevent recurrence of infection. We provide only emergency care. You must be seen by the dentist to complete the treatment. Antibiotics may be given to fight the infection. You can apply a heating pad, or sip warm liquids to relieve pain. Get plenty of fluids. Stay on a soft diet, such as pudding and applesauce, until it's no longer painful to chew. Call your dentist or return if pain or swelling are becoming worse, or if you have high fever, chills, or general body aches. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Gingivitis Gingivitis: Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. The gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily. Gingivitis is not painful, but it should be taken seriously. Untreated, gingivitis will progress to periodontal disease, which destroys teeth. Gingivitis can also worsen your general health, increasing your risk of heart attack or stroke. Gingivitis is caused by toxins from bacteria in plaque. Sometimes gingivitis flares suddenly when a new germ gets into your mouth. More commonly, it’s a chronic problem that’s easily overlooked. Gingivitis can be cured. We may start with antibacterial mouthwashes or antibiotics. You must see a dentist for dental cleaning and follow-up care. Smoking, chewing tobacco, diabetes, poor nutrition, and hormone changes (such as pregnancy or menopause) can worsen gingivitis. Saliva protects against gingivitis. If you’re taking medications that dry your mouth, talk to your doctor. (There may be an alternative medicine that’s less drying.) If there’s pain, fever, or purulent drainage, call your dentist immediately. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Periodontal disease Periodontal disease: Periodontal disease is inflammation and destruction of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It starts with inflammation caused by toxins from bacteria. These bacteria live in plaque deposits on your teeth. Pockets of chronic infection develop between the teeth and gum. Gum tissue, ligaments, and bone are destroyed by the inflammation. Eventually the teeth become lose. It’s important to treat periodontal disease. As the disease progresses, you will lose teeth. Severe damage may require periodontal surgery. Periodontal disease also increases your risk of heart attack or stroke. You must see your dentist for ongoing care. We may start with antibacterial mouthwashes or antibiotics. This is just a first step. You will need a dental cleaning and follow-up care. Much of the damage can heal with good care of your teeth. Smoking, chewing tobacco, diabetes, poor nutrition, and hormone changes (such as pregnancy or menopause) can worsen periodontal disease. Saliva protects against gingivitis and periodontal inflammation. If you’re taking medications that dry your mouth, talk to your doctor. (There may be an alternative medicine that’s less drying.) If there is pain, fever, purulent drainage, or swelling of the face or palate, call your dentist immediately. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Decay, dental Dental decay: You need to be seen by a dentist for dental decay (“cavities”). A decayed tooth cannot heal by itself. A dentist must remove the decayed material and rebuild the tooth (“filling”). The earlier a cavity is treated, the easier and cheaper it is. If the nerve in the middle of the tooth has been killed by decay, the tooth will need a root canal procedure. A crown is used when cavities have weakened the tooth enough that it might break apart. Decay begins with bacteria in plaque. The bacteria turn sugar into acid, which dissolves the tooth enamel. To prevent new cavities, you should have a thorough dental cleaning by your dentist. Then brush and floss daily. If you smoke or chew tobacco, stop. Improve your general health by eating healthy and taking good care of any underlying health problems, such as diabetes. Saliva protects against cavities. So if you’re taking any medicines that dry your mouth, discuss alternatives with your doctor. If there is pain, fever, purulent drainage, or swelling of the face or gum, call your dentist immediately. Luego cepillar y pasar seda dental a diario. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Fractured tooth Fractured tooth: You have a broken tooth. A broken tooth cannot heal by itself. It must be repaired by a dentist. Please arrange for this as soon as possible. Small fractures (“chips”) can wait a few days, if necessary. These smaller fractures are treated much like a cavity, by building up the broken area with “filling.” If your broken tooth is painful to touch, bleeding, or sensitive to heat or cold, it is NOT a “small chip” and needs rapid dental care. Fractures that expose the inner part of the tooth should be fixed as quickly as possible. If the nerve in the middle of the tooth has been exposed, you may need a root canal procedure. Often a crown must be put over the tooth if the fracture is severe. If there is pain, fever, purulent drainage, or swelling of the face or gum, call your dentist immediately. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Pain, post extraction Post-extraction dental pain: You’ve had a flare of pain following a dental extraction (“pulling a tooth”). Post-extraction dental pain is a common problem. Dentists can’t always predict how bad the pain will be. At this time, the exam shows no evidence of a serious complication. Our treatment of your pain is a temporary solution. You should see your dentist for further care. You’ll want to avoid very hot foods and spicy foods. A soft diet (pudding, applesauce) will be easier on the tender tissues. Cold packs (or cold liquids such as popsicles) may help decrease swelling and pain. If there is pain, fever, purulent drainage, or swelling of the face or gum, call your dentist immediately. %%%%Section: Problem Menu: Dental Title: Dental hygeine General dental hygiene: You need to take better care of your teeth. Cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and abscesses can destroy your teeth. These problems also damage your general health, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. Most dental problems begin with plaque. Plaque is a deposit of crusty material on teeth. Bacteria in the plaque make toxins. Some mouthwashes can soften plaque or slow its buildup. But only your dentist can remove the plaque. You must see a dentist for dental cleaning and treatment. Brush after every meal. Floss daily. If you already have some periodontal problems, or if food seems to get stuck between your teeth with meals, floss every time you eat. Smoking, chewing tobacco, diabetes, poor nutrition, use of “street drugs,” and hormone changes (such as pregnancy or menopause) make you prone to dental problems. Saliva protects you against cavities and gingivitis. So if you're taking medications that dry your mouth, talk to your doctor. (There may be an alternative medicine that's less drying.) If you develop pain, swelling, or loose teeth, call your dentist immediately. %%%%Section: END Problem: END Title: END End of update file.
